Squad 9 : Break Room The room is dimly lit by an eternal fire in a large fireplace. When you enter, there is a black-marble topped redwood counter, built into the corner across from where you enter. There is a coffee pot on the counter that never seems to run out of coffee, though no one is ever seen refilling it. There is cream and sugar, as well as disposable stirrers and a built in trash can. There are some simple pastries, meant for a light snack and a small fridge for other drinks. Turning to the left into the main part of the room, the fireplace can be seen on the back wall and four black leather couches, against the side walls, create a sort of hallway towards the fireplace. There is an oval shaped, dark red rug against the mahogany wood floor between the four couches. This room can be used for napping, talking, or just hanging out.

With a mug of coffee in one hand, Isaac went and sat down in front of the fireplace. A sigh left his lips as he took a sip. Not as strong as he liked, but he'd have to live with it for the moment. So with a quick look around to see that there was no one around, he took out a small flask out of his kosode and set his mug down. With a twist of the cap and a shot of whiskey, his coffee would instantly become much better. So slipping the flask back into his kosode, he sat and drank his coffee in front of the fire, reveling in the fruits of his labor.

Karixa was just coming from her office and was in the mood for some coffee. Maybe she could have a donut as well or something like that. She walked into the break room and found some one was already here. She stepped behind him and looked over his shoulder. He seemed to be greatly enjoying his coffee, so she commented on it. “Good coffee huh?” She grinned and went to the counter to grab a glazed donut. Not healthy, but a well-deserved snack. She had been working on paper work all day today and figured that a sugar rush might do her some good. Might wake her up properly. “So, um, your name is Isaac right?” She remembered a couple of new people coming in, and she tried to remember their names, but she couldn’t remember everything. She took a bite of the donut and grabbed a napkin, looking back at the fireplace when she was done.

Isaac jumped up as he heard a voice over his shoulder. Part of him was already thinking of ways to cover up the flask of whiskey kept in his kosode, and the other was making sure to keep the rest of himself looking calm and cool. Quickly he stiffened up and gave a short salute. 'Yes ma'am,' Isaac started off. The coffee, at least his, wasn't all that bad. 'And that is correct, ma'am. Isaac Cain, new cadet to Squad Nine.' Still fairly new to the squad, he didn't know any of the other members, but he could tell by the haori she wore that she was the captain of the squad. He had heard that she was one of the more interesting characters of the Soul Society, and he decided that he'd get more out of their "friendship" than normal. So he continued to stay there at attention until he was told otherwise or he really wanted a drink of his coffee again.

Karixa looked somewhere between amused and annoyed at Isaac's quick jump to attention and chewed on her donut while she looked him over. “Wow you're jumpy. You'd think I was your captain or something...wait...” She thought about this for a minute then grinned. “Either way, chill out. This is a break room, and I'm just in for a quick bite.” It was good that there was some new blood in the squad, mostly because in a place like Squad Nine, most days interesting things we far away, or created by one's own mind. She idly tried to remember anything about this particular recruit, and failed to come up with anything but the name. “By the way, did I smell alcohol?” She had looked over his shoulder only a moment but it seemed to her that she got a whiff of something. She wasn't much of a drinker, so she couldn't tell what precisely he had but she figured it was something. She hadn't really thought about it until now but she figured that was the sugar and the relaxing fire doing their job. She took another large bite of donut and chewed, watching the man's response.

Ah, so she had caught whiff of the alterations to the coffee. There were two things Isaac could do now. One would be to simply tell the truth and hope that it would better their relationship. The other to lie through a smile and hope she was none the wiser. Seeing as he was the freshmeat in the squad vs the squad captain's intuition, he decided that he'd take the (hopefully)safer route. 'Yes ma'am,' Isaac said as he relaxed a bit. 'I did add a slight bit of whiskey. Wasn't quite as strong as I am used to.' With a flick of his finger, he struck the flask to make the dull 'tink' to show it was there. 'I hope that it isn't too much of a problem.' Now, he didn't lie because he wasn't good at it, he just assumed that his captain's sense motive check would roll higher than his bluff. Plus, lying and getting caught doing so in the Internal Affairs branch of the Soul Society isn't exactly the best way to show that you are the right person for the squad.

“Heh, interesting.” She looked at Isaac again while chewing over her donut and approved of him admitting it. Not that she really cared if he wanted a drink, just so long as he could hold the liquor. “In matter of fact, I don't really care, so long as you don't get drunk or anything. Do your job and you can drink as you like. That and don't bash my music or you will die a horrible, painful death, but that's another matter entirely.” She said the last part rather pleasantly, but it was easy to see by the snap in her green eyes that she was in fact that serious about her music. “Although, if you wanted to call me something other then ma'am, that would be good too. That one's a request though, I can't really stop you from calling me whatever you like.” She finished off the donut then looked at the fridge quietly. What did she want to drink? Orange juice maybe?

Well it seems that Isaac's bet payed off. More Karma Points for him. He would take care to not drink too much on the job, he really only used that flask he had as a seasoning rather than a drink, so he felt safe enough in that regard. The captain seemed like a nice enough girl, he could gain much help from her. The comment on the music was a strange one, but he thought that it was a good thing to know. Now with this comment on what Isaac was addressing her as would be a helpful tip. By her saying that she wanted to be called by something other than 'ma'am' showed that she preferred a more casual experience with her troops. A plus for him as well. He just defaulted to the military formalities just to show that he was respectful to others, a good tip around your higher ups. 'Very well then, Karixa,' Isaac began as a thought crossed his mind. 'I was also wondering if there was anything you would be wanting me to do. The only paperwork I had been given so far was just dealing with registering into the Squad and other such formalities. So if there is anything you need me to do, then I would be happy to do it.' He picked up his coffee and went for a sip. Showing your willing to be useful also went well with higher ups, though too much brown-nosing meant you were after something.

Karixa looked at Isaac quietly. He caught on quick. He also didn’t seem to question her much, which was good. He seemed eager to help but she just kinda waved him off. “Don’t worry about that right now. If I need something done I’ll let you know. Besides, right now I’m trying to get out of a paper work induced coma.” She stretched then reached into the fridge for some orange juice then looked at the wall thoughtfully. “Tell me Isaac, what are you good at?” She looked at him critically, but did not elaborate on her question, nor did she seem willing to. She had a reason for asking but she really didn’t want to let on what that reason was.

What was Isaac good at? Well now, that was a blunt question. And one that anybody would exaggerate on. Willing to go along with this stereotypical kind of answer, he thought a little bit about it. Did she mean combat wise? General skills? Or something stranger? Well, he better start somewhere... 'My skills? I believe that I am about average in combat, though I don't quite get the gist of magic, yet.' This was fairly true in itself. Isaac had above average marks in swordsmanship, but when it came to magic, he was slightly below average, save for a couple few. 'I also work well with others in groups. I tend to become the leader or sub leader of the group and we turn out alright in our assignments,' he finished with a sip of his coffee. Taking a commanding spot was a habit of his. Or better, one post down. Sure, being higher up the chain of command made you more likely to get targeted, but then they'd have to make it through all the other people first. Sure, theses were only training exercises in the academy right now, but if he were in a similar situation, he was sure it would turn out in a similar manner with his skin still safe. He gave a small smile to try and reassure Karixa that he was trying to be helpful.

Karixa sipped her orange juice while she listened. What he said sounded truthful, which mean a lot more to her then to most people. That being the case there was only one this she could really do. She walked over to a drawer that was unimposing enough to not have been noticed and pulled out some papers. “These…yeah I got the right ones.” She turned around and held out the papers for Isaac to take. “You’ll make a good Coordinator. Fill these out when you have time. Unofficially, you’re a Coordinator already. Good luck.” She grinned and added, “You’ll have to know a little bit of everything, but people skills are the most important bit.” She chuckled lightly and said, “And you are the exact opposite of my skills when I came to Squad Nine. Swords were never my strongest suit.” “Not that you need them anymore.” She smiled a little bit more a Tamahiina Jokyoku's little comment and was pleased to see that he was as interested as she was. This should be fun.

Isaac took the papers from Karixa and thumbed through them a bit. Quite a bit of information was given on what what would be required of him. There was quite a bit, dabbling into investigative knowledge, basic laws and formalities, etc. Most of it had to do with working well and, what else, coordinating people. "Thank you, Karixa. I'll begin to work on it in the library. If you need me to do anything else, you know where to look." With a little salute, Isaac picked up his coffee and headed off towards the Library.

“Later.” She watched Isaac head off to the library and finished off the rest of her orange juice. A sigh escaped from her lips as she said quietly, “Most interesting thing I did all day.” “Indeed.” She leaned against one of the couches as one of the black and red butterflies flitted into the break room. She put her hand out for it to land on and listened to the message quietly. “Huh.” Neppa had made a request and information was being sent about Qastor being in the living world. The information had been sent to her because they knew she would want to know, and because it was interesting. If Karixa heard every request sent to Squad Nine, she would have died of boredom. Still, interesting information was interesting information. She sat on one of the couches, too lazy to go back to her office. "I wonder what that means..."

Karixa was interrupted from her lazy spell with another butterfly coming in for her. She listened to the message patiently then got up from the couch. A meeting. Well, well, it seemed things were starting to pick up around here. She stopped in the doorway for a moment then looked at her boots. Meh, she didn’t have time to take them off. They did say they wanted her now. Captain’s meetings were not something to be late too. After all, you could miss something fun. So she just headed off to the meeting.
