Okassis had to admit to himself - he'd been a touch overeager. Speeding through his chores full-tilt, he'd managed to complete all his set tasks just before lunch, and had looked forward to taking the rest of the day off to work with S'van on selling their lice cure. But he hadn't taken into account how grouchy the Candidatemaster was, after the debacle at the Feast - and having informed the man that he had already done all his work for the day with perhaps a little too much cheer, maybe it was only to be expected that the Candidatemaster would find something else to fill his time. But running laps around the Weyr? Really? Huffing, Okassis slowed and perched on his knees, gasping for air. He wasn't a weakling by any means - but he was used to walking long distances, not fardling running. He was already slick with sweat in the tropical humidity, and his throat felt clogged and sticky. Was this in any way supposed to help him Impress next time, he wondered, or was this just how Z'nal got his sadistic kicks? It didn't even seem like the Candidatemaster was around, but somehow, Okassis got the odd feeling that he'd know if the young Trader took too long a break. He probably had spies all throughout the Weyr, and by now, half of them had to be assigned to get him into trouble -- "Sh, shards," Okassis moaned hoarsely, picking himself up to a jog again. How long was he going to have to keep doing this? Until he passed out from exhaustion? Scorch it, it wouldn't be so bad if he didn't seem to be the only one stuck doing these grueling afternoon laps....

Kadri's role in the after hatching feast had been minimal at best, for he'd hung around the edges mulling over the Impression. It had been something far different then what he'd expected and the cheer of the newly impressed had both bouyed his mood and crashed it. Impressing a dragon seemed the elevate you beyond those you trained with. Excellent material for song writing.
And so, he'd spent much of that evening writing a song, scratching out words, rewriting them, and observing. Normally a social guy, Kadri had chosen to leave the new dragonriders to their partying, documenting instead the events of the evening.
As the aftermath settled into the Weyr, the apprentice Harper distanced himself. He'd already had enough trouble in his life, there was no sense in adding being kicked out of this place to his list. Besides, it was a few days later now and his firelizards were demanding baths.
In swimming shorts - a loose fitting garment meant for swimming - Kadri was splashing around in the shallows of the Weyr's lake with his friends, washing them and singing to them in a strong voice that carried well over the distances with the firelizard chirps an answering chorus of sounds. He hadn't noticed the runner yet - hadn't expected anyone out at this time.

Forcing himself along, Okassis's eyes didn't seem like they were capable of wandering more than a few inches from his feet. Bulky guy that he was, this could have been somewhat an issue - if anyone were around. Fortunately, he'd chosen to take a less populated route nearer to the lake today - no doubt thinking that he could sneak off for a quick dip once he got there, cool off, and no one would be the wiser.
But somewhere, between the pounding of his feet and the pounding of his blood, he began to think that there was some other noise....
He slowed to a stop, stupefied. Was that-- was that singing? He wasn't aware that the Weyr shared a lake with a Harper Hall! Tired as he was, Okassis didn't think he was imagining the sound. Distracted from his jogging, he felt wobbly-kneed and exhausted - fortunately, the lake was just a stone's throw away, and he set toward it, trying to distinguish the words that were being sung.

Felicitas was showing off as she flitted along the surface, tail dragging along the water only to flick up a tiny wave as she suddenly darted straight up, warbling at Kadri. He laughed at that, the sound interrupting the song for a moment as he shook his head and continued the simple tune. The words were a song he'd learned in his childhood, a simple chorus and a fanciful tale that spoke of dragon riders and mischievous flits.
His blue paused in his duck-like belly surfing to arch neck and peer in the direction from which Okassis was approaching. A moment later, images of a figure flashed through his mind as both his firelizards streaked through the air to greet the newcomer.
Turning, as his back was to the other, he trailed off with a look of embarrassment. He'd thought he'd been alone... "Hello... Seems like Felicitas and Cene like you." The harper chuckled as he watched the pair circle about Okassis, chirping curiously.

Had he been less tired, Okassis would have surely caught snatches of the firelizard chirping among the singing - but sadly, he was single-minded enough that he heard the song and was able to wonder at the words, but not understand the connotations behind it. Likewise, if he had only been a little less exhausted, he probably would have found a better reaction to the sudden presence of two excited flitts than to fall flat on his a** with a startled shout. No doubt his ego would have thanked him for it later, if only he'd had the foresight to keep his footing!
The look on the Trader's face was understandably startled, melting quickly into properly abashment before he chuckled. "Friendly little things, aren't they?" he answered cheerfully, trying to brush past his silly overreaction as he propped himself back up onto his feet.
