Okay, so I am trying to learn to work with the Futhark Runes. This is a way for me to get to know them better as well as introducing them to others. My plan is to meditate on one Rune at a time and post a bit about it. After each post, feel free to discuss, ask questions, or add your own insights. I will do one of these posts every few days dependeing on how well I understand the particular rune and how much discussion is going on. To start with, I'll give a brief overview. Forgive me if this is a little jumbled. I've never tried to tell other people this before. Futhark is a system of 24 ancient Norse Runes. They have a proper list order (like our own alphabet) and are broken up into three groups of eight called Aettir, or Aett singular. They were an actual working alphabet as well as magical tools. Each has a phonetic value and a particular charm or magical purpose attached to it. The term Futhark comes from the phonetic values of the first six runes in the set. Fehu (F), Uruz (U), Turisaz (Th), Ansuz (A), Raido (R), and Kenaz (K). edit: NOTE: The Runes are very powerful in the right hands and I recommend you don't go mucking about with them in spell work unless you know what you're doing. I feel very drawn to the Runes but I also respect the power associated with them. Divination is fine. Just please be careful with spells utilizing them. They did not come from a culture of peace and light and can kick you if you don't know how to handle them. I also don't subscribe to the modern invention of the "Blank" Rune. If you wish to use one in your set, that's fine. I just don't plan on discussing it or its meaning. It is primarily used only in divination.

чøυ'яε ηøтħιηg §ρεcιαℓ, чøυ'яε α §кεℓεтøη кεчRunes! I'm studying these as well; they've always intrigued me. I made a set of rune cards to use, kind of like tarot but less complicated and with runes. I really want to make my own set of rune stones this summer. Status >in want of arts, please?

Extravagantly Yours Runes! I'm studying these as well; they've always intrigued me. I made a set of rune cards to use, kind of like tarot but less complicated and with runes. I really want to make my own set of rune stones this summer. Well maybe we can learn together. I may even go into Bind Runes later. I made the set pictured above. I cut them out and sanded them all by hand and painted the Runes on them. Edit: A note on making Rune: Traditionally, Runes are colored red, the color of blood/life. In many cases, they were actually colored with blood. My Runes are painted a color of blue that makes me think of woad in a tribute to the celtic side of my heritage. However, I was cut by the saw several times while making them so they do contain my blood and I keep them in a red leather pouch I made for the purpose so I think the red/blood aspect is well represented. Just remember that the tradtional color for Runes is red and that (also traditionally) they should be read on a piece of white linen. And as to them being less complicated then Tarot, that depends on how you use them. Runes have many uses. Sorry! I quess I forgot to cover that in my intro. As I said, they are a real functioning alphabet so they can be used for writing. They can be used for magic and spells as either a magical alphabet or singly as they each contain a specific charm as a part of thier meaning. They can also be used for divination, like Tarot cards. Also, I've added a little warning to the end of my first post. It may seem unneccessary but I feel very strongly about this.

First up is Fehu First Rune of the first Aett. Frey's Aett Phonetic Value: F The most basic meaning of Fehu is Cattle or Wealth. In Norse society, wealth was often measured in cattle, hence the connection. Cows are also signs of fertility and plenty. Audhumla, the primordial cow was one of the first two creatures to exist in Norse mythology and helped to create and nurish all that came after. So Fehu has a connection to creation and creativity as well. So the wealth mentioned may not neccessarily be in a material sense. There is certainly more to say about this Rune but for now, I'm simply trying to present and gain a basic understanding of its meaning.

Uruz Second Rune, Frey's Aett Phonetic Value: U (oo) Traditional meaning is Aurochs. The auroch is an exstinct species of wild ox that was native to the norther lands. They were known for being fairly ferocious. Because they are both connected to some from of cattle, Uruz is often seen as the masculine partner of Fehu. While Fehu is the female creative force. Uruz represents the male energy. Persistence and perserverance are at the core of this Rune. It is a Rune of action and change. Growth through overcoming obstacles. It is also a Rune of healing and a strong sense of self.

Before I post another Rune here, I would like to reiterate that people can feel free to dicuss and ask question on here. If someone has insight or questions that make me think of the Runes from a new angle it can help me understand them better. Plus, the occasional comment would make me feel less like I'm talking to myself.

Thurisaz Third Rune, Frey's Aett Phonetic Value: Th Traditionally this Rune means Thor or Giant. Thurisaz is increadibly powerful and incredibly dangerous. It represents vast destructive and reactive energy. It also represents libininous enrgy or vital eroticism. Yay, more fertility signs. Fertility was very important to ancient people as thier survival often depended on the fertility of their crops and their herds. When paired with other Runes it can boost their power and is also incredibly potent in harmful magicl workings. Careful about this though, it's just as likely to cause harm to the caster, especially if you don't have a firm hold on things magically speaking. It can also be a powerful defensive aid. In divination it often represents sudden or major change, as well as the true will in a matter. I tend to think of it a massive reservoir of energy, like a dam. If harnessed properly, it can power cities. If handles carelessly, it can burst and wipe out anything in its path.

Ansuz Fourth Rune, Frey's Aett Phonetic Value: A Ansuz means an ancestral god. This is usualy interpreted as Odin. As such is is heavily associated with air. Wind, the vital breath, the power of spoken words. These are all contained in Ansuz. It is a rune of communication, order, and insight. Its power can be invoked through incantations, chants, and songs. Anything verbal really. It is also a releaser of fetters. If you have been bound, either by yourself or other forces, Ansuz can break your bonds and free you.

This thread is actually very helpful to me as well. I do read it over and study it, just so you know. I usually don't post because I give it time to absorb. Although I haven't been on lately so I have some catching up to do I think xd

Once again, I must apologize. I'm not sure how but a month has disapeared on me. Raido goes up now. Raido Fifth Rune, Frey's Aett Phonetic Value: R Raido is the Rune of travel and motion. It is often tranlated as 'riding' or 'journey'. The journey indicated can be literal, figurative, or even metaphysical. If you are going on a trip or trying to find a new path in life, this is the Rune to consult. It can also be of help in shamanic journeys, and travel to other realms of consiousness. I personally, tend to associate Raido with Sleipnir, Odin's eight legged steed, who took Hermod on his nine days journey to Hel's realm to try to return Baldur to the land of the living.
