Vocaloids (from "vocal" and "android") are music synthesizing programs based on real human voice samples and technology created by the Yamaha Corporation. - Tv tropes
There are an abundance of Vocaloid videos on youtube, if you're curious to find out what they each sound like. One that should be of special interest to Girl's Love fans is the Luka and Miku version of a great song called "Magnet" - if you're not familiar with them, you could look that one up first of all.
Personally, I like the Vocaloids because the songs are in varying genres, the characters are mostly very cute, and also because what's "canon" changes from song to song! This is probably one of the reasons why the characters get paired up in different ways so often. Either way, it's pretty cool, even if it sometimes takes a while for the latest songs to get English subs/translations.
