AUTUMN MOON
Qui Yue Scent: Pomelo Stage: Purity Date of Birth: October 22, 2009
This delicate, yet somehow vibrant blossom came into Xiaolan's care in a strange, almost otherworldly way. While walking one night by the strange pavilion which is so often avoided, Xiaolan draw drawn to the water's edge by a child-like voice and the sweet citrus scent of pomelo. Waiting was this very lotus, glowing gently as though harboring fireflies in its heart, and the beautiful young boy entrusted the flower to Xiaolan.
"Care for it well," said the boy, "and it will bring you fulfillment. Then he vanished without a sound, and Xiaolan - not knowing what else to do - brought the lotus to his home.
At first, the blossom was to float on the small pond just outside the main building; however, thinking that it might not be safe enough for something so obviously special, Xiaolan has placed the lotus in a large, clear bowl of fresh water, secured firmly on his windowsill. The freshwater is drawn from the pools of the temple grounds, and is changed multiple times a day.

FORSAKEN WOLF
Xiaolan Name: Xiaolan Li Age: 21 Sex: Male
Hair: Black Eyes: Dark blue Height: 6'0" Build: Lean and muscular, beneath his robes.
Special Talent: Wu-style Taijiquan Profession: Former soldier, bodyguard, caravan-guard Residence: Qiu-Yu Temple
History: For twenty-four generations, the Li family of Da Minghu has lived in the area and tended to the Qiu-Yu Temple. Xiaolan grew up learning the old stories and the sacred texts, observing the rituals that he would one day conduct himself, and becoming more and more impatient. This particular area is on the edge of the city, closer to agricultural fields than the city, and only in the distance could he see the distant dark line of the train, moving first one way and then another.
At first, Xiaolan tried to adhere to his family's teachings, for he was the only child and he wished to do them honor; for a time he became educated, although he was restless and excelled only in his family's traditional martial style. However, his spirit proved too restless, and he grew into a headstrong, charming young man who all too frequently harbored different thoughts than his parents. When he was 15, he ran to the nearest harbor and began assimilating there, keeping in touch with his family until he signed up with the army. Xiaolan went north as a footsoldier and continued writing to his family, as well as to the girl he loved, but there was no reply.
Three years later, Xiaolan returned home to find his parents dead. They had been aged when he'd been born, and they could not withstand the cold winter and late spring; the temple was being tended to by Bei Xiu Fang, and it was her bright, unquenchable spirit that sustained Xiaolan through his battery of guilt. His parents cremated, their ashes within the temple they'd loved, Xiaolan could have settled down, could have lived the life that his parents had wanted so badly from him... But Bei Xiu was a kindred soul, a lively girl who no more fit completely into her should-have-been life than Xiaolan did in his. She wanted to travel, beside Xiaolan. They could always come back to that peaceful temple on the hill, with its black, moss-covered rocks and its reflecting pools.
So they packed their things and they left, and they had two glorious years together until they were unwittingly caught up in the hand of War. Traveling with a caravan of foreign merchants, they were intercepted by a bandit group formed largely out of runaway Army conscripts, and separated by the turmoil of battle. Bei Xui was taken away, and Xiaolan tracked her kidnappers for a fortnight before descending on their camp, fearing the worst. With his own allies at his side, Xiaolan triumphed, and learned only that his beloved had died the night of her capture: When a certain number of the villains had attempted to ravish her, Bei Xiu pulled a knife from a bandit's belt and killed herself in defiance.
The next year was a dark blur, as Xiaolan roamed the mountains like a man possessed; only recently has he returned to his home temple, hoping to find some solace in the place he once fled.
Personality: Once upon a time, Xiaolan was cheerful, lighthearted, charming... Most of the people who met him either predicted that he'd be a great success or a complete rogue. Most of the time, Xiaolan meant no harm; but a life that alternated between being the spoiled only son and being strictly schooled to become the next caretaker of his temple made Xiaolan more than a little self-centered. He loved his mother and father, but he always wanted more.
In most ways, he was a normal boy; then, a normal young man. Xiaolan tended to take a leader position among his friends, and a little girl named Bei Xiu was always his rival and closest comrade; they argued often, even got into fights while they were younger, but it wasn't a surprise when they as teenagers fell in love. When Xiaolan ran away, it was with the determination to prove - to himself and to those close to him - that he was making the right choice.
Now, of course, things have changed, and Xiaolan immerses himself in busy work - making repairs, tending to the greenery, training or praying or meditating - in order to prevent himself from thinking too deeply on what has happened to him. Xiaolan often seems quiet, introspective, even withdrawn; he's polite enough, but seems to take little joy from life. What motivation he has is mostly in tending for his ancestral home and in teaching his family's brand of taijiquan to those who wish to learn. Deep within, he has a soft heart, and does his best to avoid killing even insects if it's unnecessary, or wounding but not killing an animal he's hunting.

A FORGOTTEN TEMPLE
Where They Live Once outside of the city, the country becomes mountainous very quickly; although the city has well-maintained roads that radiate in all directions, venturing off-road may quickly lead a traveler to become lost.
To the east of the city lies a mountain-range, which is heavily forested and quickly becomes steep. The climb is easy in some places, and in others treacherous; a path leads upwards, towards the summit of a particular peak, and is typically well-maintained if hard to find initially.
When nearing the summit, the traveler will hear the sound of water first; upon exiting the green mountain-brush surrounding you, the temple itself is revealed. The large facade seems to float upon the cleverly-built man-made lake, which taps into the mountain's own springs and allows the water to flow back to its source. The temple is beautiful but aged, by the chill mountain wind and wet; however, it is as neat as though tended by a hundred caretakers. The posts of the facade proclaim it as Qui Yu Temple: The Temple That Prays For The Rain.
The 'lake' flows into the temple's interior as well, surrounding the premises with cool, clear water, and the design seems to call attention to this feature; again, the temple is neat and clean if suffering some from age and weather. From almost anywhere within the temple grounds, one can hear the soothing sound of running water.
Within the temple is a maze of large spaces: The actual shrines, with line the edges, and the courtyards, which serve various purposes. There are sand-covered courtyards for training, sand gardens with auspicious rock formations for meditation, and the strange stone monuments that tower into the sky. It is said that these are for both the native spirits and the souls of the deceased who once tended the temple. The latter courtyards are somber areas, where it seems that nothing stirs but the breeze.
Behind the temple itself lies the extensions for peace, tranquility, and meditation: A carefully-planned garden and waterway, which works its way down the terraced leeway of the mountain. Here live many kinds of birds, fish, and insects, living and dying in the utter harmony of nature. The pathway leads to a small, well-kept housing complex, where the families of the temple guardians once lived: Now only one home is occupied, while the others are shut against the weather.
Finally, behind the house, lies the small entrance to a moss-covered cave, the mouth obscured by brush. Within the cave is a small prayer-nook, with a running waterfall that drains into a deep pool. Assorted kinds of greenery have grown up from that pool of their own accord, and the plants are those with beneficial uses: From curing pain and sickness to shooing bugs and perfuming old air. The cave is actually a cave-temple, which holds great significance for the Li family, and which is guarded and tended to with great care. The prayer-nook seems to generate an aura of peace around it.

MATERIAL THINGS
Possessions
This is a plum-blossom tree which was potted as a seedling, and has since been carefully maintained to be miniaturized. Xiaolan learned this skill as part of his family training, alongside Bei Xiu, to calm their natural energy. He keeps this, although it never blooms any farther, or wilts.

One of the few things that Xiaolan took with him when he first left his family's temple, this is a finely-made blue-jade flute. Xiaolan is an accomplished flautist, although he may not look it, and often plays for the village children. The flute was a gift from his late mother.

These paper lanterns dot the grounds of the temple, shedding a soothing green-tinted light in the evenings. Due to the damp weather and irregular high winds, the lanterns shred easily, necessitating that Xiaolan replace them. Xiaolan occasionally makes them for those who request them, although he does not accept payment.
