The Enemies

User Image Danave: All right, so here we are. The rendezvous point - our starting point on the Coreno Path. Glad you could join us. Now... [He sticks his hands in his pockets as he thinks.] Let's make one thing straight. I don't exactly make a habit of traveling this creepy path during the full moon. So I don't exactly know about the ghosts and gremlins that stalk this place. I HAVE heard rumors though. A lot of skeletal demons and ghosts and crap. It's such a load of bull. But if people say they're real... then eh, they probably are. Needless to say, I would've seen crazier s**t. Trust me. [He begins to describe to you the creatures that he's heard about during his travels.]

Enemy One: Skeletal
User Image

Danave: These guys are called Skeletals. Real original, right? No one knows where they come from, what powers them, but they're your basic undead annoyance. Since Necromancy has been dead for a few good thousand years now, they're probably just some freak outburst of the country's natural magical power. Careful though. They tend to travel in groups.

Skeletal Stats
Strength:
Physical
Weakness: Defense
Habits: Attracted to high densities of magical aura, attacks in groups
Any Special Traits?: They can reform if sliced apart with blades. Use fire to scorch their bones.

Enemy Two: Scarebird
User Image

Danave: Ewe, now THESE guys are annoying. Scarebirds. These things are the result of a freak experiment by some freak scientists, and now they've created more of themselves and have assisted in the take-over of the countryside. Figuratively of course. They're more dangerous than Skeletals in the fact that they are a LOT faster than the undead freaks. Plus they have a lot more weapons at their disposal, and no sensory organs to disable, so it's almost impossible to disorient or fool them. Gotta rely on sheer force with these guys.

Scarebird Stats
Strength:
Physical and Speed
Weakness: Attack Patterns
Habits: Tend to disguise themselves as broken fences or dead logs, have many attack patterns to choose from
Any Special Traits?: Scarebirds can call others to them when in danger, and their wooden bodies are dense and heavy while those spikes are VERY sharp. Opt for long-range attacks.

Danave: Well, those are the main two I think we're gonna see. Hopefully, nothing else will jump out on us tonight. In case anything does though, I'll keep a record of the enemies we come across, and how many we kill off. Should be fun, right? Remember to play nice, kiddies!

Quest: The Moonlight Escapade - START

Skeletals: 28
Scarebirds: 11

Sahte had made his way down the path and spotted Danave.

His colors were white and his aura gave off somewhat of a calming effect.

After listening to Danave's words intently he nodded his head and crossed his arms. "Shouldn't be too difficult"

...I'm

It was dark. She knew that it would be, but the inherent lack of light at the meeting place irked her still. Darkness left her to the mercy of her poor depth perception. Her favorite trick of judging distance by shadows didn't work at night. She had to rely on more clever and difficult tricks, like listening for distance clues in movement and timing how long it takes for something to hit her target. Ah well. She'd chosen this quest for that reason. It was a challenge unto herself. Things had been boring as of late. Quests were getting easy for her, which only left her feeling stale. Lucia had almost given up hope of questing much more. There was simply too much peace it seemed. Then she'd heard of this quest. Sure, it was being lead by an Elementalist, but she refused to let the uneducated twit, whoever he was, slow her down.

That uneducated twit, currently, was going on and on about the enemies that they would be facing. She supposed that for the others, also less educated than she, this was important information. She already knew about these monsters though. They might end up being fun to handle. Especially those Scarebirds. Maybe if she blinded them with a flash of light, she'd be able to catch a glimpse of their shadows and slow them down. Wow. The irony of that statement when coupled with her eye almost made her laugh aloud. Not quite though. Lucia didn't enjoy her laugh. When she heard other people laugh it seemed to be either warm or musical. Hers was neither. It was dry and cold and rough and ugly. It was one of the very few things she would concede that she had lesser or no skill in. Laughing. How sad.

The twit was still going on it seemed. Huh. Actually, it might do her some good to learn his name. While calling him a twit in her head was fine and all, in the midst of a battle, should she need to communicate with him, he was probably not going to respond to his rather fitting title. At least, she felt that it was rather fitting. Really, she didn't know him well enough to truely judge. It was just those carefully taught prejudices speaking. So once he seemed to be done babbeling, finishing with the admittance that he had no clue what they might run into but that he'd keep track, she decided to speak up. "What did you say your name was?" She was sure that it must have been given out at sometime, she just probably hadn't absorbed it at the time. It wasn't really that important after all.

It wasn’t my fault.
It wasn’t my fault.
I swear, it wasn’t my fault.

Would I lie to you?

User Image Unnoticed - or so it seemed - by the others who had already gathered, a small black crow had lighted on one of the branches of the surrounding trees. Just after the girl finished her question, it interrupted with a loud, rough caw before hopping off the branch and seeming to free-fall to the ground. By the time it actually reached the ground, however, its form had shifted and changed into that of a slender young woman.

Cybil casually brushed her dark hair over her shoulder and smiled sleepily at the group. Moving with her usual half-walking, half-prancing gait, she joined them. "Sorry. Got held up on the way," she said cheerfully, which was true. She had been held up by an overeager lady doing her laundry, but she didn't feel the need to mention it. Apparently some women objected to having their sheets dragged in the mud. Cybil couldn't see why. They made such funny noises, though, that she couldn't resist doing it anyway.

Cocking her head to the side in that impossibly innocent way she could pull off when she chose to, she examined Danave. Her slow smile held an appreciation that had nothing to do with his summary of what they would be facing. But after a second or two, she set her mind back to the shipment. She had to focus. Playtime came later.

The creatures sounded like they'd be a pain in the arse, but not too much more than that. Her longbow was slung across her back - how she managed to change shape and keep clothing and weaponry with her was one of life's great mysteries. Cybil was determined to get this done and keep the shipment safe. The promise of something shiny as a reward was enough enticement for her. Cyb liked shiny things.

No, that won’t help…

…You know I would.

((It's quite clearly stated in her profile that Mavalii is a lich, which is a type of undead and she is therefore immortal. I know how long humans live, perhaps a hundred years if they're lucky. I also know how long a sufficiently wily Lich can stay extant, which is a couple thousand years.))

A point in the air above the group appeared and quickly vomited out an Orochi demon, who fell on them while cursing roundly. "Dammit, that b*tch could have killed me! Hm?"

He noticed the group and got up off of them. "Apologies. I do not have the precision I once had. I gather from the aura that at least one of you is a demon, and I know that you, miss, are most likely a Tengu because while I mean no offense I'd rather like to eat you. Sorry. It's an instinct thing."

He looked around and noticed something else: they weren't in town, but were some way outside of it. A group of random people far outside of the town, all of them carrying some sort of spell or weapon on their person... "ah. Well, that explains quite a bit. Need some help with the job?"

User Image Cybil cocked a brow, then favoured the newcomer with a lazy grin. "No problem," she replied. "I hear that a lot." Her quick examination of the newcomer cemented her newfound knowledge. He was definitely a demon, probably an Orocho if he wanted to eat her. Couldn't be a Neko since he had no ears, and she doubted that many other types would want to eat a Tangu - at least specifically.

She casually glanced back at their guide, wondering why he wasn't getting them started. Maybe they had to wait for a while. Had the shipment not arrived yet? Well, perhaps they were early.

No, that won’t help…

I think that we should be together just for old time's sake,
I wanna hear you scream just like you used to do when we were alone.

Now the candle's burning out, and the pumpkin's rotting away.
I just want you here beside me on this lonesome Halloween day.

I''m laying in our bed with these tainted sheets pulled right over my head.
I'm singing all our favorite songs out loud and I'm hoping you can hear them somehow.

"Sitting here in the dark, drinking my own blood."

((Well sweetie, either I change her age or I change her story. wink And since she's a lich, wouldn't that technically mean she's a monster now, since she's undead?

And another thing hun, that I told you previously but you have yet to do. Until that little chickie gets a picture to replace the 'no longer available' sign, that profile is null and void. Same with the rest of the profiles that are incomplete. You might wanna get those pictures to me as soon as possible.

And don't expect your characters to be able to 'drop in' all the time. This once, I'll roll with it.))

Danave looked over at Lucia and smiled, nodding to her.

"The name's Danave, my fair lady," he replied good-naturedly before leaping back at Orochimaru's appearance, flame bursting into life about him based purely on instinct, sending the entire area up in flickering light. Tempest snorted from where he stood a little to the side.

"Danave, calm down!" He snapped, swishing the flames away with his tail. "It's just a stupid demon."

Danave glanced at his familiar and then shook his head, mentally calling the flames back into his body. They did so, pressing against his skin and sinking into his flesh, making darkness fall in the clearing once ********, Danave," Tempest growled. "Now our eyes have to adjust AGAIN!"

The redhead rolled his eyes.

"Yeah, yeah..." he muttered. "Shut up, Tempest."

A whinny met his ears, and he turned his head to see a carriage pulled by two horses - one a palomino while the other white - plod down the road to them, the horses controlled by a man with the brown robes of a monk, the hood pulled over his head. The cargo was covered by a dirty tarp, tied down with twine, and smelled of forest and moss. The scent of the earth was strong, covering up the scent of whatever was really beneath that stretch of material. A gruff voice came from the blackness of the hood.

"Causin' trouble, are ya flame-master? Like a lighthouse in the dark of the sea, I could see ya."

Danave grinned, walking up to the carriage. Tempest stayed back, resisting the urge to n** at the horses' ankles as his charge rubbed the white one's snout.

"Hey," he greeted. "I hope you're fairing well?" He turned to the group. "This is Sebastian. He's the one in charge of the cargo. We're in charge of keeping both safe." He looked back to the man. "Where're the other people that you said would be with you?"

The monk-robes shook from side to side.

"They vanished," he replied simply. "Like moths in flame. I'm alone."

Danave grinned, clapped him on the arm.

"Well, good thing you decided to hire some hands, huh?" He asked, rubbing the same horse on its outer flank. "Don't worry - we'll take good care of ya."

"I hope so," Sebastian replied. "T'id be a shame to know any differently."

Danave stepped away from the horses and motioned to the group.

"All right. We'll wait for just a few more minutes for any stragglers. We shouldn't need more than five or six." He did a head count. "Hmm... Including the snake and myself, we got five people. I'd feel better with six. One more, I think. That should be enough."User Image

"And a voice, it whispers: Hello my love."

((Add an extra zero to her age, then. And she's still human, since she could be brought back to full life. Skeletons are permanently undead, but according to D&D v. 4.0 a Lich can be brought back as the base human if the canopic jars are broken, the contents are replaced within the lich, and greater restoration is used within two rounds.

I'll send the pics ASAP.

thanks. I'll have to keep a couple in reserve at the tavern.))

Orochimaru cupped his chin in one hand, tapping his finger on his chin as he watched events unfold. "For what type of job are we here? I... dropped in unexpectedly, so I've no idea what to expect."

'My fair lady.' It was a nice enough statement. It was suitable for a gentleman to say, especially to a girl such as herself. She was, after all, a very fair lady in many ways, she felt. Still though, something about that statement nagged at her. It made her hairs prickle and itch on her arms. It was almost as though the twit, Danave, was looking down on her. Like she was just some fair little lady who couldn't be of much or any use at all. Now, she knew that that wasn't true. This was a fairly dangerous quest and she was obviously only accepted since they knew that she could be helpful, but still. It irked at her in a way she couldn't yet describe. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that he didn't ask about her name. Granted, he didn't get much of a chance thanks to the intruder, whom she was currently ignoring, but still. It would have been polite if he had asked for her name. Ah well. She wouldn't give it to him now unless he asked her. That was certain. With that decided, she rolled back her shoulders and tilted her head just a little higher. What a grand idea.

Orochimaru's appearance didn't startle her for many reasons. For one, he had actually landed in one of her very few blindspots. Missing on eye of vision didn't take away as much sight as one would think, but it made peripherals difficult. Another reason why his random fall didn't startle her had to do with the sound that magic made. People rarely realized it, since they didn't rely on sound like she did so often, but magic had a sound to it. It was always a hum, usually low, but the pitch and intensity really did depened on the type of magic being used. She'd heard the spot that dumped him near them appear approximately 1.45 seconds before he actually fell. Obviously, however, the others had not been able to expect this. The crow girl barely reacted, but she didn't seem like she had anticipated his fall, and the twit (and so he would be called until he proved to be otherwise) happened to let out several flames as he jumped. Ugh. That was why elementalists could be so bothersome. Since they were naturals, so many got it in their head that they didn't really need to learn anything about magic. That lead to an automatic lack of control, just like the display she had just witnessed.

Of course, that bust of fire did have its uses. Now she could see shadows, and she took full advantage of the moment. Using their length and direction, she was able to accurately judge how close she was to everyone and everything within the general surrounding area. While she'd never say it, she was almost thankful for that moment of carelessness. Planning to aid in getting rid of the fire, she summoned a small amount of water magic to hover above her fingertips. As she did so, the twit called the fire back to him. Lucia couldn't do the same with the water. Water itself didn't make a living in her. All she would do was suck the magic back in to her body and let the small droplets fall onto her fingertips and hit the floor. The dry ground probably appreciated it anyway. This entire forest seemed to scream dark, dry, danger. Maybe it was different by day light. Maybe, when it was bright out, the pathway seemed more chipper, or at least alive. Somehow though, she doubted it.

Squinting one eye shut, Lucia listened to the sound of an approachign caravan lead by horses. There were two, judging by the sound of the steps, and they were getting rather close. Eventually, the sound stopped and she figured that it was only a few feet away. She could see it, and it seemed pretty big at the distance she figured it was at, so her guess was probably correct. Ugh. She really hated having to guess things like this sometimes. It was easier this way than in battle though. Eye still squinted, since it didn't really matter and the muslces in her forehead had yet to tense up, she listened to their words. So this guy was all alone. Well, sucked for him. It sure made her, their, job easier. She couldn't really blame his company for running off though. He certaintly seemed like a gloomy sort of person, if not very blunt. She couldn't fault him for bluntness though. Not without being a pot calling the kettle black.

So they were waiting on one more. "Fine with me." And there came that tone. It was a sort of tone that almost suggested, but didn't say outright, that she felt as though she could handle without someone else but would humor the others as they needed it. Originally, she had forced this tone out. It turned people off and got them to let her be in peace. Now though, she found it hard to keep away if she tried. Not that she really tried all that often. It was just that, at times like these, it might be best to try to act civilly with the people that would be fighting alongside her. Ah well. Not much she could do to fix it now. So, deciding to wait, she used her memory of the shadow before and smoothly against a tree only a step or two away. She was still part of the group that way, but could relax more.

User Image Cybil smiled idly, fiddling with her longbow string. It tended to loosen without proper attention paid to it. Since Cyb knew she couldn't afford that, she checked it every few minutes. When the carriage came, her eyes absolutely lit up. Horses! She loved horses.

She made her way up, not looking at either Danave or Sebastian - or, for that matter, much of anyone else. Her attention was entirely fixed on the horses. They were just so pretty! Gently, she began stroking one horse's neck, making soft sounds that the animal responded to in kind. It would be a wonder, judging from her current behaviour, if Cybil could keep her mind on her task for long enough to actually help protect the cargo.

She proved she was paying attention when Danave spoke again, however. She glanced up with a little, amused grin and asked, "And how many were you expecting to begin with?"

No, that won’t help…

…You know I would.

((Lol, you want pictures of the horses, SSD? xD))

Danave shrugged.

"Enough," he replied leisurely, a little self-conscious now that he just showed that his power was extremely sensitive to his emotions. "Maybe seven or eight. But six is good too." Grinning, he clapped his hands and looked around. "Well, while we wait, how about some introductions? As you all probably know by now, I'm Danave." He bowed to them leisurely, extending his hands out to his sides, palms up in an elegant, albeit showy, gesture. Then he motioned to the hound near him. "And that's Tempest, my familiar. He's a teddy bear, I swear."

Tempest rolled his eyes and chose not to say anything. Sebastian noticed Cybil's affection to the horses.

"Ya like 'em, girl? They're powerful things. White one's Ash, and the pale one's Chessa."User Image
