Like 'em, don't like 'em, and if you like 'em which species is your favorite and why? So far when it comes to tame rodents my favorite is the fancy rat.

What are some rodents the rest of you like?

I have four rats, and I love them dearly. Rats are the only rodents I've kept as pets, but I can't imagine wanting to have anything else. They're like tiny little people. They're so smart and have such unique personalities.

I just wish they lived longer. My oldest two are getting close to being two years old, which is starting to get kind of old for rats. They're still in good health, but it makes me sad to think that I'll be lucky to have them for another full year.

I've only got two rats. Both of them are still fairly young since I only recently got into rats. I think my older rat is approaching a year old though.

P.S. I've also had dwarf hamsters as a kid. Let me tell you they don't make as good pets as rats.

Pet rodents scare me. Don't they attract feral rodents? I wanted to have a pet rat when I was younger and I lived in an apartment complex, so I bypassed my mother and went to the manager's office and asked if we would have to pay a despoit for a pet rat, and she said that we wouldn't, because we couldn't have one. Because they have a certain odour or something that that they give off that attracts feral rodents. .-. I pretty much never wanted a rodent after that.

Plus, I have cats....Yeah...bad mix. xD

I've have pet rats but they haven't attracted wild rats. To my understanding tame rats don't attract wild rats. Food however will attract wild rodents.

They're actually not, technically. I believe their closest relative is the polecat. They're also related to otters and weasels.

Ferrets are such weird animals. I visited a friend and stayed with her for a couple weeks, and she had a ferret that she just let run free in her flat. That tiny animal was so bloody annoying and could cause so much destruction. I was sleeping on the floor, and this thing would come up to me in the middle of the night, stick its nose in my ear, honk loudly, and then bounce away making this manic giggling noise when I woke up and told it to go away. It would also pull my blanket off me, bite at my toes, and knock over glass bottles and roll them around on the hardwood AT FOUR IN THE MORNING. But it was so damn cute that it was impossible to stay mad at it for long. And then sometimes he'd just...pass out, and I'd put him in my pocket or down the front of my shirt and go walking around town with him, and he'd just stay napping or half-asleep the whole time. I made so many friends hanging out in Starbucks with that little guy sleeping on my lap. mrgreen

I started out with two. Byron and Milton. Then two turned into three (Clancy) and three turned into four (Oscar). I have a bit of an addictive personality. xd

Fortunately or unfortunately, the cage I have can only hold up to five rats, and we don't have space for another cage, so I can only accomodate acquring one more accidental rat. But the cage dynamic is really nice now, for the most part, so I'm not looking to get another. Then again, I wasn't looking to get another when I ended up with Clancy and Oscar, so who knows. Though I'm pretty sure my partner might kill me if I ended up with another rat. XD

It's a myth that rats, at least, will attract more rats. In the wild, rats are very territorial, so new rats won't generally try to encroach on territory that smells like it already belongs to an established pack. So if anything, keeping pet rats would help keep wild rats away.

I have a cat, too. He doesn't really bother the rats. Sometimes he'll go up and sniff at their cage, and they'll try to bite him through the cage bars and then he'll completely avoid them for a couple weeks until he probably forgets what happened, at which point the process will repeat. He couldn't get into their cage, anyway, even if he tried, and I don't let them be out together in the same room. It's never been a problem.

My older albino rat is a bit of a shut in but likes people. She's the only rodent I've seen who doesn't try to escape from her cage. Her favorite food is peanuts as well.

My younger black and white rat is much more outgoing. She's also very fond of people and is quite possibly the most talkative little rodent I've known... she's always chirping. Of course she's also as the stereotype when it comes to cheese.
