Image a place where becoming a warrior was what every equus dreamed of becoming. The valley was lush and green, with a stream to one side and trees sprinkled about...A place where the grass was always green, the weather was always fair, and the leading family was just in their ways. This was the place where Duvessa had grown up, along with her older brother, Gabriel. Far, very far from where Eden is, the vampiress was not always a vampiress. In fact, she was actually born a Freyja and quite fangless. Her personality was also different, she was more friendly, out-going, and optimistic. There were no cares in the world that got to the Young Duvessa.
The night that Duvessa and Gabriel was born, it would be a night that none of the inhabitants of the area would soon forget, nor would it be likely for them to forget to easily. The night was dark, the darkest anyone can remember, and the moon. On, the moon was such a contrast to the dark sky, it was quite distinguished. A pearly, white sphere placed in a pitch black sky, there were no stars in this night. None were to be seen nor to be recollected when later asked. A long labor that resulted in not one, but two foals was a blessing to the couple. Or so they had thought at the time. It would not dawn on any of them, nor had anyone paid attention to the special warning spoken by the blind hermit of the herd. He had warned of terrible things that were to come and the cause of such events would be the birth of two foals, alike in nature but not alike in spirit and essence.
As the night wore on and the mare had feared that the foal inside of her would not come out and die as a result, the pain had finally came. The birth of Day and Night had begun. The first to be received by the world was a colt of the whitest of coats that it was blinding in the dark night. A becon of white, one had described it. Upon the colt opening his eyes, orbs of the clearest blue was all but that had captured the heart of the couple. Just as the mother was about to start cleaning the colt, a wave of pain shot through her body and another bundle was delivered into the world. Dark as the night sky itself, the mare would have not seen this foal until those crimson eyes opened. Piercing the darkest just as the colt's coat had, it would be forever the feature of this filly that would make her stand out. Never before had an equus of any kind in this herd possess such blood-red eyes. It was almost haunting to look at. Though there had been tales of equus and red eyes, the mare took no heed of them and pushes such fables to the far reaches of her mind. Surely, her own daughter could not be such a monster as the stories described those with red eyes. This was not a time to listen to the words of a crazy, old equu; this was a time to rejoice! Two, not one foal had begun it's life this dark night.
Donning the name of Gabriel by his mother, the name came from one of their legends about a high Angel. The Angel Gabriel was said to have possess such the whitest coat that nothing could make it dark, not even darkness itself. It would always be a light when all others had failed. Living up to that name, the colt's coat was always white, never had the dirt and soil of the ground had left its mark on the perfect coat. As for the filly, she was given the name of Duvessa. The stallion had chosen that name from a story he had heard many moons back from his grandmother. His grandmother had spoken of a story where the night was captured in the coat of an equu. A powerful being this equus was, it was said that the equus could walk invisible during the night times and that it struck fear into the hearts of those that saw it. While the couple could not even perceive how true the names of both foals would come into play, they had the hopeful dreams that the two would become the best leaders that this herd has yet to see.
Each day afterward, the twins grew and played together. There was never a moment when the two were not alone and without the other's company. It was later established that the colt enjoyed the winter time and being out in the open with many friends around to play with while his sister, on the other hand, was quite the opposite. She preferred to stay in secluded areas where she had little contact with others. While many would think of her as weird and strange, it was indeed caused by those reasons why the filly stayed where she was. In a herd where normal colors were accepted, the twins stood out among everyone. Not for their size, nor for the lack of horn and wings, but for their coats. Such a vibrant and solid color they both possessed that made them the object of talk with every inhabitant of the area. It ws more than likely that the filly's name would be passed from one mouth to the other in gossip as she did strike fear into the hearts of many. While it was true that she was rather friendly and out-going, appearances hold the key factor to whether or not someone remembered you. And in the filly's case, her appearance spread much gossip around the herd. She was considered abnormal and strange. One that was cunning and a trickster that stole the souls of other foals during the darkest potion of the night. While all of these accusations are highly and utterly false, no one dared to go against what was being passed around as anythinig but true.
Shunned from interacting with almost all the other foals, the filly's only friend was that of her older brother. Though essentially they were the same age, the colt possessed more of a mature air than the filly, and coming into the world before her, she had always considered the colt as her older brother. During the times when she would go out to play with her brother, she had captured the eyes of many. They always wanted to have a look at her crimson eyes and mutter at how such a family as her parents could be cursed with such an abomination as she is. Ignoring the mutterings and gossip, the filly cared for none of it. As long as her older brother was with her, nothing could darken her mood.
As the two grew into adolescence and were beginning to come of age for training to be a warrior, it was then that the final blow had come to the filly, or so it seemed. The filly was all but forbidden to become a warrior. While both males and females became warriors, the word of the dragon equus was taken as law when it came to that matter. The master of the training, a dragon equu, refused to teach such a cursed filly as that one. He had made the comment that would forever stay with the filly.
"I will not teach such a cursed filly as that one. I fear for my life whenever she walks by. The air is cooled and a shiver goes down my spine. That one will bring destruction to the world."
And from that point on, the filly was regarded as a curse -- a jinx -- and all the others avoided her like the plague. While the filly tried to remain true and happy around her older brother, it was becoming increasingly difficult to do so. The rumors were beginning to get to her and it was crushing her spirits. Night after night, the ebony filly would lay in the moonlight and cry. Begging the moon to swallow her up and let her leave this horrible life. It was made obvious by everyone that they didn't want her, they only wanted her brother. "The pure equu" or "the Angel" as he was referred to by many. And, one night while she was out and crying to the moon, her brother happened to stumble across his tear-stained sister. Those crimson eyes of her's were water and held so much sorrow, his heart would have broken if it could. Comforting her, the colt of white had never realized how much she was not accepted until that night. Making a vow to be her protector, he promised that nothing bad would come to her as long as he lived. He wanted to see a smile on her face all the time, it was more beautiful with a smile than a frown no matter what the other equus said.
Hearten and relieved by this, the filly placed all her trust and faith on her brother. As they had grown up knowing that they were the Prince and Princess of the herd, it wasn't until Gabriel had turned into a young stallion when that came into play. Keeping to his word, Gabriel would come during the night to his sister and teach her everything he had learned that day in warrior training. It wasn't until half-way through his training he had begun to see that his sister was much more talented in this art than he was. She was stronger in strenght than he was, while he was stronger in wit and mind. Playing mind games on his younger sister whenever they practiced some move never ceased to amuse Gabriel or anger his younger sister.
While it was common for the dragon equus to train the equus of this herd, they exchanged knowledge with the vow of protection. The herd was at war most of the time with their enemies of the South. A band of Unicorns that wanted their land while they had plenty where they were. Having been to combat only once, Gabriel was preparing to go again as aggression to the South was increasing. Pleading and begging to go, Duvessa's requests were all but placed on deaf ears. Her older brother would hear none of it and stood firm in decision. His departure was bittersweet as she wished him farewell and to be safe. She couldn't afford to lose her only brother.
Crimson eyes were clouded with worry that whole time he was gone. With most of the herd gone except for the really young and exceptionally old, Duvessa was the only one of her age left behind. One fateful day, the ebony female was wandering to the stream when the blind hermit stood before her. Stiffening at his presence, Duvessa had heard many stories about this equus and didn't know what to believe. Just before she could get a word out, the blind stallion spoke in an airy voice.
"The fates have not been kind with you, Dear Child. Please, come and listen to what has been wrongly hidden from you. The Stallion of Day and Mare of Night are all but written in a prophecy that our storyteller passes down to each generation. Fearing that it would strike controversary, she had yet to tell the story after the birth of your brother and you. You have the right to hear it, Child."
The blind hermit took no time as be began to retell the ancient story...
"A long, long time ago, bad times had fallen upon this herd. Wars were becoming quite costly with more and more lives being lost and nothing was being gained. Just as all hope was lost, two figures appeared out of nowhere to save the herd. A stallion of pure white and the sun shinning down on him stood to the right. And on the opposite side stood a mare of the darkest black and shadows swirling around her figure. They were the Stallion of Day and Mare of Night. With their aid, the war was won and no more lives needed to be sacrifice. While this was terrific news for the herd, this aide came with a price. The price was of this: a prophecy that the next twins were born into the herd with one bearing a coat of white and the other bearing a coat of black would signify an altering event. Whether or not this event is good or bad, no one can really say. Many view this as a harbringer of death for the herd, which I feel that is absurd. Duvessa, your brother and you were not born the way you were by accident. This was all staged by the gods above, and for a reason I have yet to figure out. Do not distress over what any of the other equus say about you, Dear Child, for they say it out of fear and respect for you. They would not dare stand up to the black mare with her white brother standing next to her." And with that, the blind hermit turned and began wandering away from Duvessa, but not before throwing at her some more words,
"The truest of power shall be fleshed on the bone, As the stone twins await -- both power and order. There, the past and the future shall finally be shown And the secret will be revealed to all who can see.
Only a family, both loving and true Shall conquer this, so ancient, so new. As they fight to uncover what secrets they share. And who shall divine, in the dead of night, The lies from the truth, the darkness from the light?"
Those words tortured the ebony female as day after day dragged on until her brother returned. Happy and elated, he bore not a scratch nor wound on his white pelt. Receiving his with as much happiness as she could muster, once they were out in the night underneath the fully moon did she relate to him the tale of the blind hermit. Expressing her fears, they were all but accepted by her older brother. As she had much to tell, so did he. He told her of the accounts in the battle and how they now have a new enemy; one they have never battled before. Vampires.((To be continued))

Name: Duvessa Meaning: Dark Beauty
Personality: Duvessa's personality varies all the time. Though she is a vampyress and has a hard time feeling emotions, there are time when she does feel emotions. Most of that is when she is thinking about her brother or with Kveairo. A smile has never graced her face after the death of her brother, she feels that is is inappropriate to have such a happy expression on her while she has done such a terrible deed.
About Duvessa: Since she can't be out in the sun for such a long time, she stays to the shadows and the trees of the forest. The only time she goes out into the valley is if it is nighttime or the day is cloudy.
Significant other: Though it is not official, Duvessa's heart is taken by Kveairo. He is her Dark Knight. The one who has helped her with her past and is always there for her. He has changed her in more ways than she knows of at the moment.

Name: Gabriel Significance: Gabriel is the Angel of mercy, annunciation, dreams, aspirations, bringer of news, maker of changes, resurrection, vengeance, deaht, and revelation. He presides over Paradise and is the ruling Angel. Gabriel grants wishes and hopes to mortals, as well as joy, mercy, understanding of mysteries, truth, justice, miracles, and love.
Personality: Gabriel is a kind soul who is patience and kind. He is not the equus that is to be crossed with, for he can hold a grudge just as long as Duvessa can. While his sister is strong in strength, he is strong in mind and wit. Compassionate and calm, he supports his sister and is her protector. Since they have grown up together, it is natural for them to be as close as night and day. Which, they have been referred to as, seeing how different the brother and sister are.
About Gabriel: Since his sister and he grew up together, they know everything about each other. Born to the royal family of their land and being the first born male, Gabriel was planned to inherite the crown -- or armor -- in this case. While Gabriel knew this, this did not suit him. He was not aggressive nor did he want the responsibility of the armor, he had plans of passing it to his sister when she came of age. She seemed the more capable of the two for that role, and he'd be her advisor. Though, he had never let out these wishes to his family, especially his parents because he knew they would not approve of this, and in all respect, be highly against Duvessa taking over the armor.
Keeping this a secret, he had helped in Duvessa's training when she got older. A game he always played with her was a play on words. He'd always say something, but it'd mean something entirely different. He was his sister's protector, he would give his life just for her to live.

The journey before... 'Oh dear, what have I done? What have I DONE?' That question repeated itself over and over in the ebony vampiress' mind. Crimson eyes were clouded with sadness and remorse as her golden hooves took her away from the terrible place. The place where she had slain her own brother. Her own flesh and blood. Her twin! Disgusted with herself, a loud and angry hiss escaped from within. How could she had done such a thing as this terrible act?! Crimson eyes narrowed as she remembered the battle as if it was happening before her. Like shadows and illusions, there were equus everywhere...fighting...screaming...the sounds of hooves clashing into bodies and those icy blue eyes...
The fight was heating up. The vampires appeared to have gotten the upper edge in the battle between the warriors. They did have an advantage. Their fangs. None of the equus from Duvessa's herd were monsters that possessed such instruments as those. Bodies were scattered across the ground and the grass was stained with the blood of both vampires and equus alike. Like a becon of hope, a pure white stallion with silver armor was in the middle of the chaos. Battling and fighting with his heart. He was there to protect his kind from this new enemy and so help him if they touched any of his kin...they wouldn't live to see the darkness of the night if he had a say in the matter.
Slashing this way and kicking that way, the vampires were swarming all around him. While it looked like a losing battle, the will of this particular male was strong and pure. That was his main source of power. As his warriors were busy fighting their own enemies around him, the white stallion stood tall and proud. His wintery coat was stained in blood in some places as well as the polished silver armor that adorned him. It was a massacre.
And off in the distance as the ebony mare. While at this time, she was not a vampire, but much rather a freyja filly on her way to becoming a full-fledged mare. She had snuck away from home, away from being an out-cast to be with her brother. She couldn't stand the fact that he could go off to war and protect their lands while she could not! She was just as capable as he was in the art of war. He had taught her everything he knew, and she practiced all the time. Her developing muscles were evident to her training as the rippled with each step. Staying close to the trees, she peered forward as those crimson eyes of her's caught hold of the fighting. This was the first time that she has ever seen war and having it played out before her was nothing that she had expected. It was dirty and down-right gruesome. The sight shocked her more than anything as her blood began to boil. Why couldn't she help protect the herd like her brother?! Crimson eyes narrowed before they soften with her brother in sight.
A stallion of white in the midst of all the chaos, she was enchanted by his movements. So fluid and graceful, it was like watching a dance. A turn here and a turn there, she could see the passion flow through his movements and body language. Oh, how she longed to be out among the fighting! Just as she thought that the coast was clear, a movement was caught behind her and she jumped. She had been caught! Like a deer caught in the lights of a car, she was paralyzed. No where to go and no where to hide, crimson eyes slowly shifted to behind her as she gasped.
A stallion. A vampire stallion, to be exact, was standing right behind her with a quite devilish glee to his eyes. Scared and stiff with fear, the ebony female stood there unable to think. And as quickly as the paralysis came, it left her and she fled from the scene. Bolting from her spot, she could care less to where she ran just as long as it was away from that vampire. Oh, those teeth were hideous! They haunted her very sight! Closing her eyes and willing them away, the sticky scent of blood was caught in her senses as she opened her eyes just in time to run over the body of a fallen comrade. Oh no, she had bolted right into the battlefield!
Turning her head back slightly, the vampire was no longer chasing her, but was flying up above. Circling and following her like prey. No sooner had she came out into the clearing when that sweet, soft voice drifted to her with an urgent tone to it. "DUVESSA!" Cried the white stallion with fear and worry written all over his features. It was quite evident that this was not something he was expecting and this had taken him off-guard. Though, it appears that the vampires that were once circling him had vanished and joined in on the chase after his sister. What was she doing here, he thought to himself with each pounding stride. What did the vampires want with his sister? What had caught their interest? And then it hit him like a ton of bricks. She possesed the naturally dark color of the night and those blood red eyes of hers...She was in trouble! Pushing himself faster, he could barely see the rising and falling hindquaters of his sister along with the many vampires in the sky after her.
It was a time like this where he would have given anything to have wings. They would be of much more use in fighting off the vampires in the sky than chasing after them on the ground. Calling out to his sister again, he had to get her attention. She was probably running scared and blinded by fear, for this must be her first time in the field of battle. "Duvessa! You need to listen to me! Please, calm yourself!" But his efforts were to no avail. She kept on running, and he kept on following her.The calls of her brother were droned out by the pulsing fear that the ebony female felt. As the forest was coming into view, she charged with another burst of speed and shot through the trees. Swiftly weaving through the trees, she had to find a place to hide...a place to get away from the vampires! Each pounding hoof brought her closer and closer to her ultimate demise, but she did not know that at the time. While she could not look up at the sky and see that the vampires were not chasing her anymore, she still thought they were.
As the forest was becoming thicker and quite dark, the ebony female slowed down slightly before a laughter was heard to her left. Turning to her right and running that way to get away from the laughter, it was to no avail. The laughter came from the direction that she was running in. Turning tail and traveling in another direction, the laughter was now echoing all around her and she stopped in her tracks. Scared and frighten with no where to run, she swallowed her fear and stood ready to fight.
She would fight just as her brother had taught her to, for her life would depend on it now. Just as she was about to lung out in one direction where a rustling sound was heard, she was paralyzed. Now, this was not by fear, but by other means. Struggling and trying to free herself, she was now face-to-face with the vampire. Leathery wings protruded on either side of the stallion as those hot, red eyes seared into her own. But the thing that caught her by surprise was the black coat he possessed. Black as the night. Just as her's was black...Trying to move again, she now realized that she was paralyzed by the vampire stallion as he gave a malicious laugh. "And where do you think you're going, My precious? Ever since I caught sight of you many moons ago, you have been everything I have hoped for in a mate. I'll make you an offer I don't normally make other females before turning them," The evident look of his content was written all over his features as the ebony female screamed out with her mind for help as she was unable to do so herself. Crimson eyes burned with anger and hatred towards the vampire stallion, "I'll stop all this bloodshed with your herd in return for you. Ah, but what do I see? Is that a look of defiance I see?"
Releashing the movements of her mouth so she could speak, she spat at him angrily, "I will make no such pack with you or your kind! You disgust me and I would rather kill myself than let you take the likes of me!"As his sister had shot off into the forest, the white stallion followed after her. Dodging the trees and keeping the ebony female in his sights until the forest was becoming darker and realized that he had now lost her. Just as he was beginning to lose hope on seeing his sister, voices in the distance caught his attention. His sister! Hope began to flood through him as he ran in the direction of the voices. As he got closer and closer, dread began to seep through him as the words began to materialize before him. His sister was wanted by the vampires?! Not taking a chance to let this happen, he made his presence known by charging through the trees and straight towards the vampire stallion.
With this distraction, the ebony female was releashed from her paralysis and charged after the vampire stallion as well. Seeing now that the odds were against him, an angry female and a doubly angry male, those leathery wings of his spread wide open and he took off, but not before throwing out a threat, "You shall be mine soon enough! Mark my words...I will make you mine!" As the words sunk into the two equus, the white stallion walked over to his younger sister and gave her an affectionate nuzzle before licking her cheek. "Duvessa, you had me so worried!" With a stern tone, "What are you doing here?! There is a reason why you should stay home, My Dark Twin. What would I do if something were to happen to you...I would never forgive myself..." His voice trailed off just as the memory had begun to fade away...Blinking the tears away that were beginning to collect, Duvessa's heart twisted in pain at the memory. She missed her brother as the disgust with herself was beginning to build. She had betrayed their trust and committed the ultimate act. Oh, how could she?! As she traveled with her head hanging low and the armor jingling softly, she didn't want the armor anymore. It was a reminder of what she had done to get it. Her parents didn't know the truth nor would they ever find out. She had exiled herself from the herd. Without her support...without her older brother, there was no point in staying in a place where she was not welcomed as much as the vampires were.
Crimson eyes were sullen and sad as the trek across the lands would take a toll on her, as her memories would begin to eat at her heart and conscious. For, that was her first encounter with a vampire, but that was not her last. Would a new change of scenery help her broken heart? Only time would tell.

On the road to...?
A breath was exhaled as the vampiress' breathing became deeper with remorse and sadness laced through her body. Every breath brought about a wave of pain; a wave of sadness so strong that her eyes were closed from the horrid sun and green scenery. It was a curse! A curse, she hissed loudly. Why did she have to live?! And to be the one that killed her own brother, to be allowed to walk the earth and stay like this monster forever?! It was truly a curse...
Ears were flicked back as the ebony mare was resting against a tree. Crimson eyes were sealed shut as her head and tail were hung low to the ground. While the day was bright and sunny, with the occassional chirping of a bird in the distance, all Duvessa was surrounded by were voices. Voices from her past that had awaken to haunt her. She could pick up her brother's voice...her parent's voices...and a voice she would kill the source the next time she saw the cursed thing! Swirling around her, the voices tugged on her like little hooks. Dragging her from the present and back into the past....Her parents and brother were arguing. Over what, she did not know at the time, but the vampiress hissed under her breath before she roared. "GET AWAY!" Huffing as her chest heaved up and down, those crimson eyes remained shut as her brother's gentle voice slowly took her into the past; a place she didn't want to go into...
"...You really need to be more careful, Duvessa. I don't want our parents getting anger over that little incident that happened the other day." Her brother's worried voice rang through her head as the ebony female trotted next to him. It has been many days since her encounter with the vampire stallion and the attacks against her herd, strangely, appeared to have decreased. While the others were happy and excited by this news, her brother was not. His brow was drawn together with a worried expression on his features. His body language hid his true meaning, and that only Duvessa could see. Something was admist and her brother knew about it, but had not told his twin. While she was curious as to what he was thinking, she wouldn't dare pressure him into telling her if he did not wish to. Sighing softly, she replied, "I know, Gabriel, I am ever sorry that I went in the first place...but I was worried about you! It's not fair that you get to go into battle while I am stuck here with nothing to do! I am just as good as a fighter as you are, but the others refuse to let me do anything!" She paused before shifting her crimson eyes over to her brother as they began to water, "I just wanted to be with you, Gabriel. You're my other half and it pains me to do things without you..." Her words trailed off softly as she moved her head slightly away. It was the truth. The others did not trust her and felt she always had bad intentions on her mind. She was forbidden from learning the way of battling and barred from doing anything with others in the herd unless it was her family.
Her brother could see the pain in her eyes as he moved his muzzle close to her cheek and nuzzled her. "Duvessa...Duvessa..." Her name was spoken so softly, so tenderly that it melted her heart to hear him talk like that. "I can see everything you go through, but you are needed here. What would happen if I were to lose you? I would be forever crushed without my other half by my side...Sister." As the two walked towards their family's area in the valley, Duvessa split from her brother to head off towards the right. She was quite hungry and wanted to get something to eat.Her brother, on the other hand, had a mission in mind. Icy blue eyes sought out his parents and in no time, rested on the palomino mare and the blood chestnut. Breathing in a deep breath, he pushed forward as he called out, "Mother. Father." His parents' attention was received with their heads turned in his direction. Once he was about a body's length away, he spoke softly but firm, "I have to talk with you..." And with that, the trio walked off to a more private area to talk.Catching the fruit tree in her sight, the ebony mare trotted over happily. It was her favorite fruit: apples! Her tail flicked as it displayed her happiness. Rearing up a few times, she finally plucked a few apples from the tree and munched on them happily. Savoring the sweet taste, she licked her muzzle clean and decided to take one back for her brother. As she held the lone apple in her mouth, she trotted back towards her home when voices in the forest drifted towards her. The voices sounded angry, like an argument was going on...her brother and parents?! What could they be arguing about? The apple for her brother was long since forgotten as it fell to the ground and she charged for the forest. What could they have an altercation about, was the thought that swirled through her mind as she slowly lessen her pace to a halt. Her father's angry voice could be heard yelling at her brother. Shock was written all over her features as she stood next to the tree. Listening in, they were obviously arguing over something important, but that something important was what she was trying to figure out. Then, it dawned on her like a light before her eyes. They were talking about her!
Ears perked forward as she listened while her crimson eyes were getting bigger and bigger. As her brother talked about the wants and demands from the vampires, they all revolved around her! She didn't quite understand it, sure she was the princess but wouldn't the prince be more valuable? Shaking her head quietly as she listened on, the bomb was finally dropped. The leader of the vampire herd they were fighting against wants her or else he won't stop the fighting, but to make matters worse, he wanted their family's armor. Oh, this was quite awful indeed. To think of even giving up their family's armor was sacrilegious. As she listened further, her father's voice stabbed her heart. He was willing to give up her for the safety of everyone else! Apparently she wasn't anyone important as the others of the herd treated her like the outcast she was. To think that her own father would treat her like a scrap of meat, like something you could just throw away...Bitterness began to eat through her as sadness touched her heart. Turning away to flee, the tears began to stain her cheeks. The sounds of hoofbeats all but alerted the trio that their conversation had all but been heard by the subject of the matter. Rushing to his sister, Gabriel was in shock as well. He couldn't believe that their own father would sacrifice his daughter for all the other equus of the herd. It was absurd and he couldn't even fanthom was his sister was going through at the moment. Icy, blue eyes caught a glimpse of black up ahead and raced towards her as he called her name softly, "Duvessa....Duvesssa." This didn't slow her down any and apparently she was avoiding him. With a sharp turn to the right, his sister darted through the forest once again and away from the herd's territory. Where was she going, he thought to himself as he ran after his sister as feelings of wanting to comfort her held strong. He was her protector and he'd be damned of anything got to his sister!Ignoring her brother's call and pushing his warm voice out of her head, the ebony female wasn't going to stop for him. No, she was going to leave and let the herd live. If she wasn't worth anything to her father, than what value did she have to her herd? A sound came to her left as she shyed at the sudden movement in front of her. Neighing loudly as she stopped, the figure was the very one she dreaded to fear. The vampire stallion. His dark black coat only helped to blend in nicely with the dark forest as his eyes traveled over her hungrily. Pinning her ears back and flicking her tail, she held her head high and wasn't going to back down.
The male's cold, dead voice crackled with vemon as he spoke, "My, my. It seems you have returned to me all too soon. Have you finally accepted my request to join my league?" Snorting at his question, Duvessa spat, "You wish, Fiend. I would rather die than you join. You are nothing but monsters that take the life from others because you have none!" That touched a nerve alright as the vampire stallion's eyes flashed angrily and hissed sharply, "Touche, touche. What has riled you up so?" Walking in a circle around her, she would feel his piercing gaze and tried to shrug it off, "This is quite appealing to me. Quite appealing indeed."
Crimson eyes followed the vampire stallion's movements, she wouldn't be caught off-guard this time. Ready and alert for anything, an icy tone edged its way into her voice as she spoke, "Take your eyes off of me, Fiend! I am not an object for you to obtain or win. Get out of my way or I'll rip your throat out." A hollow laugh escaped the vampire stallion as his dead eyes locked onto her own, "My Dear, I am dead and you cannot kill the dead." A step and then another, he slowly inched his way towards her until she could smell his rank odor and feel his coldness. Was he actual dead...but how?! The life was pulsing through her veins and this attracted him even more. As she was paralyzed in place while trying with all her will to move, she wanted to get away.
Those fangs of his were bared and he was about ready to bite down into the warm flesh of her neck when he was knocked down. Her brother to the rescue! Shaken from her paralyzed state, she reared into the air and charged after the vampire stallion. Crimson eyes flashed dangerously as she was wanting him dead. But, as soon as she was mere inches from him, he vanished! Blinking, she looked to the left and to the right, but to no avail. He was simply gone! Her brother called to her again and she was beckoned to him. With his warm and comforting cheek resting against her own, he blew a warm breath against her neck and spoke softly, "Duvessa, my sister, forget about our father and everything you have heard. I have promised since the day we were but mere foals that I would let nothing happen to you and I'll keep my promise if it means my life."
His words were spoken with such determination that she was moved by them. Lowering her head and pressing it against his neck, she breathed in his soft scent as she cried her heart out. Why did she have to be born differently? Why? Why? Why. Feeling her brother embrace her, she returned it and was submerged in his comfort. "Please, don't cry Duvessa. Tears do not go on your lovely face, Sister." Her brother moved so that they were standing right next to one another when his icy blue eyes captured her own crimson eyes, "I will give up myself before I let them take you. But for now, let the words--" He was interupted by his sister as she spoke quite rapidly, "I knew this would happen! I just knew it!" Her brother's confused gaze led her to explain herself, "One day, while you were away, I met up with the hermit of the herd and he told me about a prophecy. He told it to me and it all fits in! The prophecy about the Stallion of Day and Mare of Night is about you and me! Oh, how could I have not seen this sooner..." She began to pace back and forth as worry began to edge onto her features.
Her brother walked over and stopped infront of her, "Duvessa, I want you to stay with me all the time. I want to keep my eye on you so that the vampires don't get their hand on you as it appears that you just seem to get yourself into trouble. Please?" His eyes pleaded and she could do nothing but comply. A nod of her head and she confirmed this agreement. She would stay with her brother most of the time so that he could watch over her...And so, as it would be imagined, that wouldn't be her last encounter with the vampire stallion but it was the last friendly encounter she had with her father. After that day, she spoke not a word to him and gave him no chance to be thought of nicely in her mind. If he would do nothing to save his own daughter, than she did not think of him as her father.
A cool breeze blew past the vampiress as she slowly opened her painfilled eyes. They bore nothing but happiness and sunshine around her. Everything that reminded her of her brother. Her brother that meant the whole world to her, but in the end was the very life she had taken. She had turned into one of those monsters who live off of others and not on their own. Trying to push the memory away as it began to torment and taunt her more, she could not get her brother's warm smile from her mind. It was imprinted there and stood firm; apparently it didn't want to leave her. As her heart was beginning to ache from the pain and sadness she carried, she could feel no happiness at the good times she spent with him. All emotions were lost to her except for her own pain and suffering.
Pushing forward, she journed away from the tree and into the unknown. Away from her past, away from her family, away from her title, but most importantly, away from her brother. Oh, she didn't even get to bury his body before she left! She would be forever tormented and cursed by this.

Pondering...
After a full night's rest, the vampiress felt more refreshed than she has felt since that day. Shaking her head slightly, the jingle of her armor brought about a wave of painful memories. As if in physical pain, Duvessa winced and willed them away. Slowly the memories subsided as crimson eyes looked forward. She was in such a strange and unknown place to her, everything was foreign. The way the trees swayed in the wind, the chirping of the birds, the way the shadows fell on her body; everything was different! Hissing softly, she wanted to escape from reality into a world she was used to, a world in which everything was set right and she was who she used to be, not this blood-thirsty monster!
Unbeknowst to her, she was slowly traveling towards a new horizon, a place in which she would possible find a home...and maybe, just maybe some closure to her story. Huffing at the thought, "Yea right, and I will fly." She retorted with a slight hiss. She vowed never to let the memories of her brother fade from her memories and heart for if she were to do that then her whole existence would be meaningless. She was not Duvessa without Gabriel. She was not the Lady of Black without her Stallion of White. They were one. Black and White, like Yin and Yang. Her older brother was as much of the opposite of her as she was to him. While they shared the same parents and a few characteristics, their personalities were so strikingly different that they help to strengthen the other.
Dipping her head slightly in the hopes to get as much of the shade on her as possible, this ebony mare was not one for the sun at all. It burned and stung at her skin like a thousand needles pricking her skin. Not a pleasant feeling at all to say the very least. A step here and a step there, the rythmic beatings of her large, golden hooves helped to lure her into a deep sense of thought. Traveling the space of her memories, a question popped out from no where. A question that her brother had posed to her so many moons ago. What did it mean to care for another? While the most obvious answer an equus would say would be that they would want to make the other happy no matter what. To never see a tear grace their cheek and have a smile always light their features, but that was not enough. Anyone could make someone cry and anyone could make someone happy, but what it special? What made it known that you cared for another?
While at the time, Duvessa was slightly confused and perplexed about this question and why her brother would be asking her such a thing back then. But, in the aftermath of everything, this question came back with such a verocity that was unknown to the mare at present. It was the embodiment of Gabriel. Her brother was kind, generous, and always willing to bring a smile to anyone's face. She remembered their meeting underneath the full of the moon when that question was presented to her...
Hidden within the darkness of the night while her brother sharply contrasted the black sky, Duvessa felt a smile slowly grace along her features and crimson eyes shining with happiness. Just like her brother had promised, he had been with her through her most trying times and even stood up to their parents after the little incident quite a while ago. Flicking her tail as she took a step to touch his muzzle with her own, his soft words flowed through her mind like silk. He spoke of things that meant nothing but to take up time. Trivial things. But then, a question caught her attention as crimson eyes searched her brother. What had brought about this sudden shift? Tilting her head slightly, she moved a bit closer and leaned against him. "Gabriel?" She questioned softly, unsure of what to actually say at the present, which was quite rare for her as she usually always had something to say.
Her brother turned his head at her soft inquiry and his icy blue eyes knew just what she she was thinking at the moment. No sooner had his eyes gazed upon her own did they avert to the moon above them, basking them in her glory. His reply quickly followed, "I have been in thought as of late Duvessa, and it has opened my eyes to the things around us. I see things more clearly than I have before...so now, I won't be tricked into such things as what Father wants to do with you," His voice paused slightly before it took back to speaking, "I have been thinking about things I normally wouldn't have thought about. Now while this does me a great service, it provides very little to you, Duvessa. So, I present you with a question that I want you to think about. Now I know your first response will be one that we are all taught to understand, but the answer is something deeper. There is something deeper behind this question, and that is what I hope you come to understand." Icy blue eyes turned to look her dead on as he spoke the question that has plagued his mind for the past few days, "What does it mean to care about another? To truly care for another that is not yourself?"
If her confusion could be any more obvious, it would of had been painted on her head in bright, bold letters. Opening her mouth to say something, it was shut slowly afterword as no word came out. There was something in her brother's look that made her think twice about saying anything. When did such questions become so important to her brother all of a sudden. Well, if he was trying to teach her something, then she would do it. Nodding her head slowly, she would think about it...
As the memory slowly faded away, crimson eyes flicked forward. She remember that after that time, she had spent much time thinking over the question posed by her brother. While she came with the same answer over and over, she thought that it was hopeless until something helped to open her eyes to what her brother was trying to get her to see...((To be continued.))
