Cavalier: Cavalier Aion of the Core

Name: Booker Charles MacBride

Nicknames: Book by the two-syllable impaired

Age: 16

Birthday: June 18th

Sign: Gemini

Blood Type: AB

Fav. Food: baked potatoes with sour cream and chives but absolutely no butter, very rare steaks when prepared correctly ("No, no! "Rare" implies dangerously cooked. When I say rare I mean just let it look at the oven in terror, then bring it out to me!" -- ... awesome quote, shut up), spinach salads, glazed pecans, pineapple sherbert

Hated Food: anchovies, gummy worms, those candy bars that are disgusting chocolate covered coconut, artichokes, sweet and sour chicken (awful experience with some undercooked portion of it when he was thirteen-- can barely look at it)

School: Meadowville High School

Hobbies: Boxing - The habit and sport was one he picked up from his father when he was young and Trent decided that no son of his should have to deal with any sort of bullying (but really, MacBrides as a whole were not disciplined enough for karate and tae kwon do so off to the ring it was!). While he's no protege and he'd definitely be placed in the a light weight category, Booker has a good idea of how to jab and when to do it. He's won a few matches and can take a hit. Currently a prime player on his high school's team.

Doodling - Definitely not drawing-- Booker's nowhere near good enough for it to be called that-- but he doodles constantly over his notebooks or any scrap paper lying around. It's just a harmless, constant thing, mostly having to do with small astronomy-linked symbols like crescent moons, stars, and the sun (complete with solar flares). Rarely, he takes a break to draw up some big-eyed moose and geese, but he normally sticks to doodling Saturn ('That's the one with the rings, right?') up and down his notebook's divider.

Pinball - Since his college years, Booker's father has owned an old space-ship themed machine where all the objects the ball can hit are planets or astronauts. Even though the pinball machine was settled in the garage for most of his childhood, Booker would lock himself into the game for hours at a time, and often he and his brother would go through whole tournaments of it together where they saw which of them (or their friends) could wrack up the most points before going through two balls. As they got older, they put on ridiculous restrictions such as tying one of the player's hand behind his back or covering their eyes at random moments. As part of Booker's sixteenth birthday, that very machine was moved to his bedroom room taking up an impossible and unnecessary amount of space-- but it was his father's ultimate gift to him and he cherishes it with devotion.

Hiking - While not the sort to go on eight mile treks through the wilderness, he likes paths through forest preserves and he'll walk them with someone if they want to. He has a nice wooden staff for it, actually-- he keeps meaning to take classes to learn how to use a quarterstaff, but he just doesn't have the time.

Gemstone: Alexandrite

Virtues: Charismatic - Booker is the sort of person that can immediately garner in others' attention. He possesses a frankly delivered attitude wherein if you're wearing a shirt with some comic book character he likes-- well. He'll actually say it rather than keeping it quietly in his head. There's a sort of openness about him that's rare to find and it tends to attract people to his side. Unfortunately-- one might say-- Booker mostly uses this gift to keep everyone happy and in order to pursue his own goals. In other words, he has yet to try it on a girl and isn't entirely sure how well that would work out. Friends are just fine for now.

Ambitious - Booker has plans for himself-- Booker has goals. There are places he wants to go in life and he doesn't think being a one-track-record about them is something to avoid. Truth be told, it's not that he wants to be world-famous and become a household name (not that he'd really say no to either), but Booker wants to get as far as he can and break any boundaries he comes across. He doesn't need to be a bigshot movie star, but he does want to be a man who didn't let any roadblock stop him. As a plus, Booker's brand of ambition really isn't a cruel trait-- it's all about what he wants for himself and putting in a world of effort to get it. He doesn't ever see the need to put others down in the process.

Philosophical - Booker is extremely interested in philosophy-- both western and eastern-- and can get rather caught up in the task of trying to decipher another person's motivations. Even the symbolism prevalent in his own life usually becomes a topic of immediate intrigue; if he sees the number two continually, even knowing that such a thing is probably coincidence and doesn't matter, he will think about it. Since he was young he was into the oft-called 'useless' discipline of trying to read his dreams (aka finding Dream Interpretation books on Amazon.com and treating them like verifiable bibles of his subconscious). He gives the Land of Nod a great deal of credit.

Reliable - Booker comes to meetings on time, has never missed an important birthday or holiday date, and knows exactly where he should be when someone needs him to be there. As a rule, he's steadfast and true-- happy to help someone out as long as they go through the trouble of asking him. When it comes to class projects, Booker always holds up his end of the deal and more if asked to. There's really nothing a friend could ask of him that would get a negative response, and at the end of the day, he's at least one guy you know that isn't going to flake no matter what.

Flaws: Anxious - While Booker does his very damnedest to hide it, this is the real downside to finding one's considered charismatic. In essence, he's become somewhat dependent on getting along with others. When the occasion arises, Booker experiences sharp pangs of nerves at the realization that maybe-- just maybe--he's failing to charm someone. There's always that niggling feel at the back of his neck-- 's**t, what did I do now?,' 'Ack, s/he probably thinks I was hitting on her/him!-- WAS I?,' 'It's the shoes. I knew these were retarded. NNNRRRGH.' No matter how much he outwardly appears to play it cool, Booker owns some honestly frayed nerves that don't do well whenever he has to deal with a fallout. Understandably, that anxiousness makes him abysmal at confrontation with anyone whose opinion matters to him in the slightest. Fortunately, fighting is excellent stress relief.

Easily Flustered - This is a matter of temperament for Booker-- things get under his collar quickly. It's not that he's actually a peevish person and it doesn't have much to do with him breaking into capslock (he actually does that rarely), but it does mean that comments get to him. Small jabs form seeds of doubt in his mind and he agonizes. This works with the anxious behavior, but it also has to do with other things-- he becomes very passionate in debates and loses his temper if someone continues to disagree with his point of view. Being flirted with makes him have to give considerable pause before he can muster up a response that isn't '... /nervous laughter.' Things get to him and especially in a battle this could end with him forgetting his goals and just going after the person who's pissed him the hell off-- regardless of requested strategy.

Ridiculously Loyal - Before the torches come out and someone goes 'OMFG THAT IS NOT A FLAW'-- let's just explain how it fits that 'too nice' policy. How it really messes Booker up. He does not detach-- he does not let go. If he knows someone enough for them to become his friend and they in any way betray him, he won't pursue any personal justice. If after he becomes a Cavalier and they're taken by the Negaverse, he wouldn't lift a hand against them. There is nothing he can do once he finds himself thinking someone is important to him and Unplugging from a Senshi he's found himself attached to might break his heart in pieces for months at a time if he put that much trust in them to begin with. While one could say his platonic (and supposedly romantic) fidelity is admirable, it's mostly only caused him pain in the past and likely will in the future.

Too Trusting - This flaw can definitely go hand-in-hand with the fierce loyalty to create a devastating problem. Booker doesn't immediately barnacle himself to anyone breathing next to him, but if someone genuinely says they like him there's a gullibility factor that has him believing it. He believes sincerely in always giving someone the benefit of the doubt, but sometimes it works to uncomfortable extremes (less 'fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me' than '... So, eightieth time you fooled me, huh? But you really think you can change this time... right?'). This can compromise him in several ways-- especially as a cavalier-- but he does want to believe the best in people. He just wants to believe it again, and again, and... again... and again.

Challenge: Prepare yourself! -- Gawd, that's boring. But Book thinks it's classic.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

Eyes: Almond shaped-- he is mostly Caucasian, after all. Booker suffers from a very vague, hard to see bout of heterochromia-- on the left side his eye is simply a pale golden-yellow, the other is a few shades darker. It's something that really takes a second or third look to see-- a popular genetic aberration in his mother's side of the family.

Hair: medium length (the longest part falls just below his chin)-- vaguely longer in the front than in the back giving it some shape. An average dark brown bordering on black-- however, he already has peppered gray and white around his temples and threading in all around his hairline. Again, it's common in his family to start losing some pigment there early on-- he's not bothered by it though it does give people the impression that he should be older than a high school student.

Face: Strong featured with a sleek jawline and attractive cheekbones. Scattered over his body-- and the left side of his face-- are flat, dark brown moles that are often mistaken for freckles (though they appear far less frequently). His ears have a slight tilt and point-- not elfish at all now that he's older, but they gave that impression when he was a young kid and he got a lot of grief for it from his peers until he grew into them. Still, often hidden under his hair just because.

Body: Standing at a very average (maybe slightly tall for his age) and even 5'10", Booker isn't exactly the most lethal of looking young men, but he's wiry and lean and can get where he needs to. He possesses a narrow waist and well-proportioned limbs-- fit enough for what he likes to do which tends to be very active (see Hobbies). Genetics are on his side and his natural bone structure would be classified as a medium build-- he's definitely not underweight, but he stays far enough away from the opposite category.

Fashion: Booker's sense of fashion is very minimal. He's happiest in a size-too-big t-shirts (often depicting images of band logos or video game characters) and jeans. There's nothing that really marks him as particularly special when it comes to the way he's dressed-- he's just a fan of simplicity. In the winter he'll put on a simple dark coat and gloves are never a statement-- just something to keep his hands warm before he can slip into the nearest heated building and strip them off. Summer finds him in sandals, but any other season is ragged and used sneakers that desperately need some ductape or super glue to be passable.

Fuku Colour: Burnt gold

Weapon: Obviously his sword is a rapier, but for the specifics-- the handle is gold and thin with a hand guard made out of a spiral pattern that covers his hand in full (see the #1 sword here).

MISC. INFO

Ethnicity: Mixed; American of Dutch, French, and a faint strain of Vietnamese descent (found that last one out via a grade school history project and was faintly amused)

Sexual Orientation: He's young and-- well-- um-- completely undecided. Brought up in a very open family where he was told repeatedly if he was gay it was fine, he just doesn't know and he doesn't think about it nearly enough to decide. There's no underlying sexual issues that keep him from figuring it out, he just-- well. Um. These things take time! He probably should have more of a clue considering he has been in some sort of dating pool, but nope. Nothing. No decisions here!

More randomness to be added as it comes to me.

FAMILY

Father: Trent Oliver MacBride

A tall man with a large heart to match, Trent was always the sort of father that also did quite a bit of parenting for his sons' friends. An architect, he's very mathematical and suited well to problem solving, open to helping his children, wife, and any others with any life-threatening or just intense issues they come across. He's always tried to foster creativity in his children and has long believed in allowing someone to explore their world for themselves. Despite his spouse's protests, he was giving Booker and Louis condoms when they were fifteen-- waving his hand and saying they could get the talk whenever they liked (Louis had said something to the equivalent of '... I got to go meet Jennifer. Now.' and Booker had been slightly horrified and speechless). He's always been a bit odd, but it's the sort of natural, fatherly thing one comes to expect. He's great at what he does and has designed (or at least helped design) quite a few visually-appetizing buildings. He and Booker have a slightly distant relationship as of late that's mostly accredited-- by Trent-- to Booker 'finding himself as a young adult.' He and Louis are extremely close and talk more like friends than father and son.

Mother: Alice Tien MacBride, nee Swanson

Alice is a very short, but curvaceous woman whose elegant hands have graced anything from a violin to a trombone to a xylophone to a harmonica. Exceedingly musically inclined, it's no surprise that after being a homemaker for several years-- stopping around the time Booker turned twelve-- she actually put her teaching degree to work and got a job as the Fine Arts chair at a local junior high. There, she teaches classes mostly dedicated to the school's chorus, but has also dabbled in drama and art when staffing was low. A much sterner and more disciplined figure than her husband, Alice's role in Booker's life was to teach him what it meant to be a man (which might seem odd, but that was simply the family dynamic). There were expectations and allowances, but in the end she instilled him with a sense of strength and integrity. Spilt milk was no big deal, but you owned up to it-- that was just how it went if you wanted to live in Alice's home and live under her wing. Before having children, Alice didn't know how to cook more than grilled cheese or eggs, but since having her two sons she's spent a great deal more time with her mother learning about classic vietnamese dishes as well as American needs such as hamburgers and slightly fancier grilled cheese. She dotes on both her sons, but is very much the mom and not the pal that Trent attempts to be.

Brother: Louis Marcus MacBride

Being only two years older than Booker, the two experienced a great deal of the rivalry that most siblings do, but really-- there was never one that chose to bully the other more. Perhaps it was the minimal age gap or just their personalities, but Louis always treated his brother as though he was a twin rather than someone who came into the world some three hundred or so days later. And minus the fact they've always been in two separate grades, people have believed it of them-- they're very similar in appearance, though clearly not identical. It's always just been the way they were with each other-- playful and understanding. Compromising, living separate lives, but able to come back to their shared room at night and talk about things they couldn't with anyone else. The separation for Louis going off to college was very, very difficult for the both of them, but Louis is something of a sham and wanted his easy-to-get-into art school far away that would let him smoke whatever he wanted and live in a nearby apartment with his girlfriend of the last few years. Clearly, Booker wanted something else. They're in heavy communication and often text or chat or find some way to communicate often that doesn't seem like they care too much. Secretly, Booker does look up to his big brother just a bit, but he'd never, ever admit it.

Grandparents (Paternal): Marcus Avery MacBride and Lily Agatha MacBride, nee Carrigan

No relationship. Booker hasn't seen them since he was eight and his father experienced a heavy falling out with the pair. Even as a young adult, Booker doesn't know the details there. On his birthday, he receives a check for fifty dollars. A routing number and a generic card from a shop-- that's the extent of their bond.

Grandparents (Maternal): John Eric Swanson and Quinn (originally Quy) Kim Swanson, nee Hoang

John and Quinn's relationship was actually a very turbulent one when it began. Quinn came from a Vietnamese household and while she-- herself-- was American, she was brought up with very different principles than the free-wheeling, daredevil that John turned out to be. But that's another story entirely. The two of them are very much in love and have always been involved in their grandchildren's and sole daughter's life-- visiting constantly. Spending the holidays or inviting the whole MacBride family out for a wonderful time at their own estate. They're just jovial people, happy together-- never once experiencing the pangs of wanting or moving through a divorce. Because of this and his parents' own rather blissful marriage, Booker was thankfully never introduced to that sort of family tearing, though it has made him feel bad when he's mostly unable to empathize with those that have (a guilty sort of inkling in his chest that he was blessed with an eccentric, but loving family life while others... not so much). Booker is very close to John in particular and switches out between asking him and his father for advice, depending on the situation and how much he wants to hear about one of his grandpa's youthful escapades ('Before I met your grandmother, of course').

AS A CAVALIER

When it comes to working as a Cavalier (a Knight, etc. etc.), that impressive and devastating loyalty does have it's dual nature of being in some ways a Virtue for Booker (it's that sort of thing-- multi-faceted for the win?). He follows the Prince and Kunzite (really, anyone appointed leader) without too much questioning. It's not that he's a blind follower, but he understands the nature of ranks and if they prove in any way that they're trustworthy, he's bound to attach-- barnacle-like-- and want to earn their respect.

Due to his ambition, it's possible that if Booker was given a shot at it or if any of the leaders were out of commission (for any reason-- illness, death, they simply couldn't take the stress), he would vie for the position. There's a need within him to make things work (part of that charisma) and keep people happy. He likes working on a team and he's invested himself slightly in it, whether it was the duo he and his brother made or the actual boxing matches he's gone through. Initially, he would never consider himself the sort of person looking to take control, but if someone hinted or asked or if nobody was stepping up to the plate-- why not? He knows he can do it; the capacity for it lies within him.

When working with his senshi, Booker would be an outright slave to his devotion. Ready to take any blasts or hits whether the one he'd chosen to protect was a frail waif or six-foot-seven and made out of pure muscle. That's simply the way he works and one condition that wouldn't make him a very good leading figure at all-- he would readily abandon anyone for whoever he was Plugged into and to some extent it makes sense (what with that whole if they die, he dies thing). That doesn't mean he wouldn't play human shield to others, but he knows where that loyalty has to lie and it's at whoever he's in the service of's feet. Pointblank.

BUT WHY A CAVALIER?

To be honest, I'm going to break 'out of character' here for a moment and just say when I was trying to think of what the hell I wanted Booker to be, because I thought of him first as a character before anything else, I thought 'KNIGHT.' He wants to be a Knight. Not a senshi, not a lieutenant, not anything else in the world. He's ambitious and he likes people and he's dog-loyal-- wants to be a Knight. Obviously, Cavalier is the first stage thereof.

Back to explaining Booker specifically in this line of thought, he really does have the attributes one would align with the classic idea of the 'knight in shining armor' motif. He's upright and thorough, willing to learn (and cringes when he can't), and overall guy's just not a bad catch. There's a tenacity to him that works with the image such a thing projects. Within him there is the spirit of a fighter, which was perhaps why he did become so dedicated to simple tasks like boxing or pinball-- power and (highscore-making) strategy. These things are what fuels him and he dedicates himself-- as he would to whatever senshi he Plugged into. Whether or not he was classically in love with her (or him) wouldn't particularly matter as long as he could find a way to trust that person-- the second he did, there he is. Ready to defend until the last or until he's specifically asked to step down (pretty much the only way he'd Unplug-- very harsh circumstances).

MM-KAY, BUT WHY THE CORE? HUH?

Again, it's a simple matter of who Booker is-- his essence for lack of a better term. He's someone who grounds-- someone who finds something to fight for and damn well fights for it until he's all but a scrap of blood and residual ick on the pavement. From his parents he was taught to dedicate himself and be the proverbial 'man'-- protecting someone or something is his core, and he can bring other people together-- or at least he'll try his best-- if given half an inch. Whether the actual leader or just a number in the Captain's ranks, he holds himself strong and he holds himself true (minus the gnawing at the back of his skull from his worry at not being redeemed, but-- you know. He works through it as best he can).

OH, WAIT, THIRD SCARY POINT THERE--

There is one way in which Booker would stop listening to his Captain and Prince and that would be if he fell in deeply with his senshi and they ended up corrupted. He might Unplug if he was absolutely forced to, but in most instances he would just continually see if he could save him/her. Pretty much give up everything but a defensive stance if attacked and-- well. Let's just say he wouldn't take kindly to anyone attacking someone he cared about to that degree and it might be enough to corrupt him in turn.

But that would neeever happen... right?

Here is probably where I should go 'ZOMG CRIT PLZ PLZ PLZ,' right?

First off Barren Pines doesn't exist anymore. You'll have to pick between Hillworth (Which you will NEED a reason for him going.) Or Meadowview. Barren Pines was a Meta plot only school and is now destroyed, claimed to be the site of an Organ trafficking ring.

Also since you're doing a Cavalier quest, let me take time to suggest you take a peek to see what else you need. Because you need more than just that. For example, why would he be a good Cavalier, Would he question the prince and the leaders? Etc.

Yeah, I was actually told the Barren Pines thing a moment ago from a friend and just switched everything so he could go to Meadow (turned him sixteen, switched details for that, etc.) Juuust alters the thought processes a little, but no big. Just my bad-- blaming everything right now on not enough sleep as that is a good enough excuse for me.

Fair enough~. I wasn't sure if we also needed a blurb on that since the forum thing stated something about 'we'll mostly see if he fits the Cavalier via his Virtues and Flaws'-- but I get what you mean. It's a quest! Needs fleshing out. I'll work on that now. Thanks! <3

The reasoning for being a Cavalier, etc. is actually not a requirement, however it has become common practice for questers to include this. 3nodding It's best to check the accepted quests to get a proper idea of what is/isn't required.

I've only skimmed this and everything required looks to be included, though I'll suggest that you shouldn't short change yourself and add in a 4th Virtue/Flaw. 3nodding

Yeah, having a little extra doesn't hurt to have though. -shrugs- >> Like Froggy there said.

Most quests do have only 3 flaws/virtues though if they're strong you can get away with two or three really. -edit- Though he does seem a bit flat still. -/edit-

Also I'm not sure if you've described Charismatic right... It seems to act actually more like a flaw for him to be honest. Most charismatic characters I believe draw people to them, but then it makes it sound like they'd rather not be around him at the same time because it's almost an obnoxious sounding characteristic.

The ambitious Virtue seems to actually ramble. (I'm about about this myself) But I don't see what kinds of action Booker will take to actually make his goals actual ambitions that he's willing to actually go after. It sounds like he's just "Okay this is my goal. I'll sit here and wait for it to come to me."

I'm having a hard time to think how to suggest to fix some of the other little quirks that seem a bit out of place. You have a very good start though.

Also, there's a few grammar flaws, like If after he became a Cavalier and they were taken by the Negaverse...... there's a slight thing that I think needs to be changed there so it reads more If after he becomes a Cavalier and they were taken.... would be a slightly better read.(Though that could be me just being crazy that, that's a grammar flaw.)
PostPosted: Thu Dec 31, 2009 1:02 pm

The whooole thing is actually pretty rambly, if we're going to be honest (and rambly is not a word, if we're going to be super honest).

To be honest, though. I'm really not sure how the Charisma thing comes off as a flaw to you? While I have tried with actually most flaws and virtues to show that everything in that way is dual-natured-- you'll notice with a lot of charismatic people that they actually aren't taken as seriously as those who are more prudish, or at least I have. And by describing the dual-nature that was... I suppose my attempt to make him less flat? As for ambitious, I'm trying to reword it to see if that's the problem, but again I'm not sure.

Aaaallso, yup~. On grammar I definitely never get it the first few times. I get most of it even partially correct by reading it out loud to myself. I wrote that all up on the spot a second ago so I'm sure I'll get to that soon. Thank you for your help though! I'm definitely reading the parts you mentioned and trying to shape them up and I am seeing if I can add another virtue/flaw-- I think I got a virtue that's pretty obvious for the route I'm taking with Booker as a character, but gotta find a real stable flaw that isn't '... he probably scratches inappropriate places in public sometimes and doesn't notice because he's a fail.'

EDIT: Okay, added another virtue and flaw (four in total for each) and I think I have it pretty well thought out right now (changed up how some of it read to hopefully make more sense). But, as always, I am totally up for more critingz as it says in the title! Just gonna stare at it for now and try and see where I can ramble less... in my rambly way.

OK SO not so much a crit but just a picky little thing that's been pointed out in other quests--stuff like ethnicity and sexual orientation doesn't need to be in the actual post. Maybe move it down to the "family" section? I keep a misc notes section in all my quests so that I can get judged on the form that people would see in flatsales and if they're interested see things like where various parts of appearance/interpersonal relations are coming from and what I intend to do with them.

Just something I should let you know, Booker seems to be pretty okay otherwise. smile Good luck!

Oh, all right! I actually-- no joke at all-- was just staaaring at how much I had crammed into that first post. Just now. I was looking at other application quests and saw someone bumped my thread and was like '... I see.'

Def gonna move that down to fambly and make sure I do that with any future quests, too. Or use one of my extra posts as a 'misc.' Thank you!

EDIT: Actually! Does that also mean it's best to move things like Hobbies and Western Sign as well to the next section down or to a misc? And keep the first post just the form? Hm hm hm.

EDIT 2: Moved everything minus 'Sword' that wasn't on the original form down to post two. Moved fambly stuff down to post three. Post four becomes the 'WHY THIS AND CAVALIER AND THIS AND THIS' section. I think that works out much better. Thanks again, Romantic, for the advice. <3

Oh! I was going off of the custom form with what I have right now. Okay, time to edit some things back. XD Thank you so much for your patience and help! I swear I'll get better at this.

EDIT: Okay. Everything should fit that form now, me thinks. Today has been a productive day. I'll make sure the other quest I'm working on is twisted around to fit the same criteria. Blah <3.
