Mary Sues
Okay, first let us define what a Mary Sue is. A Mary Sue is an original character who's life is perfect, everything is perfect for her/him. As writers we want to avoid a Mary Sue because it is not realistic. In life our own lives are not perfect, so why should we make our characters lives perfect?
If you, as a writer, want to make a realistic fanfiction or story then you have to make your characters realistic for your story. So let me give you some examples.
Katie's life was perfect, everything about it was perfect.
Please avoid writing that. We don't have perfect lives, so Katie (our example character) shouldn't have a perfect life.
Katie's life seemed to be perfect. That day seemed to be the most perfect day in her life.
Okay, so now Katie's life seems to be perfect. Why does this differ from the other? Well, everything can seem to be perfect then our lives can take a turn for a worst.
Katie's life seemed to be perfect. That day seemed to be the most perfect day in her life. However, as she began walking to school she was hit with a realization, she didn't do her homework!
That's much better. We now see why her day isn't perfect and it is more realistic. This is just a short guide on Mary Sues. I will update a bit more on Mary Sues later.

I have 2 accounts mainly. I'll put them in the "Your Account" bit or whatever it's called...

Mary-Sues don't always have a perfect life, though. Often, I see (and sadly, write) Mary-Sues with unrealistically tragic pasts. They also come with (if possible) most or all of the special powers available in a certain fandom, at the strongest possible degree. It's not just "Katie's life was perfect." It can often come in the form of:
"Katie has suffered every possible torment imaginable, is in a state of dire poverty, yet somehow has no problems whatsoever and is liked by everyone. Katie can do anything because Katie is good at everything. All the boys want to date her. All the girls are jealous of her. Katie either gets away with everything or is punished more severly for everything (part of the tragic life thing), and everyone forgives Katie when she makes a mistake because she is Katie. Katie never faces any problems because everything goes her way. Unless it comes time for her to be rescued by the love interest, in which case everything goes wrong."
Etymology of "Mary-Sue": Originally from Star Trek fandom, Lieutenant Mary Sue was created by Paula Smith in 1973 in her story, "A Trekkie's Tale" to poke fun at all the idealized self-insert characters for Star-Trek fandom. The name soon came to apply to any idealized character.
