Ilex Forest

User Image

User Image

DESCRIPTION -
Ilex Forest is a very large wood located between Azalea Town and Goldenrod City, requiring most to travel through the Forest in order to get to either. It is a quiet, serene place, home to many Grass and Bug type Pokemon, and it is said that it is watched over by a protector, to whom a shrine is dedicated near the center of the forest.

LOCATION -
Ilex Forest is located in southern Johto, between Azalea and Goldenrod.

PEOPLE -
The only people here are either people from Azalea cutting down a few small trees in order to make charcoal, bugcatchers, or people who wish to pray at the forest shrine.

RESOURCES/EVENTS/PLACES OF INTEREST -
Forest Shrine: - A small wooden shrine dedicated to the Forest's erstwhile protector. It is unknown who constructed it, but people still come to pray and thank the protector anyway. There is also a small rounded notch on the front of the shrine, as if a sphere of some sort is missing from the shrine . . .

MYTH/LORE -
It is believed that the entire Forest is watched over by a silent, ever-present protector, for whom time is no obstacle. The shrine is dedicated to this protector.
It is also believed that under the right circumstances, this protector will appear before a trainer of great power . . .

As Shelley stepped into the quiet forest, she immediately took in her surroundings. She could hear a soft breeze blowing through the trees as patches of sunlight seemed to glow in between the branches. Her mawile took a deep breath and jumped in the air. The air was extremely fresh here. Shelley was already starting to like this place as she started walking forward, enjoying the peaceful scenery.

Occasionally, they would hear the sounds of pokemon in the distance. Shelley smiled. She was looking forward to meeting a nice peaceful grass type than she could tame with ease. She decided that taking it slow at first would be the best way.

Mawile jumped up and down as she saw something on a nearby tree and started to run towards it, but Shelley stopped her. Although the forest seemed quite peaceful she made sure to be cautious. When they got near the tree in question, Shelley froze. There were kakuna all over that tree and disturbing them was the last thing that she wanted. Before she could say anything, Mary boldly ran up to the tree and poked one of the kakuna that hung near the ground. Shelley held her breath as the kakuna's eyes seemed to look their way. "Mary," she whispered. "Get back over here, those are dangerous." Despite Shelley's commands, the mawile continued poking the kakuna. Eventually, the cocoon got aggravated and sent out a small bug like hum. Afterward, all the kakuna on the tree seemed to awaken. Mary then jumped back with a grin and sent a large flash cannon attack at the kakuna. "Are you nuts?!" Shelley finally yelled out to her pokemon. She don't remember ever raising her to be so foolish.

All the kakuna on the tree were now awake and alert. Mary's attack seemed to aggravate them, and soon they all began to glow as their back began to split open. Shelley stepped back, but tried her best to keep her composure. As the many kakuna began began their evolution to their final stage, the mawile jumped in front of Shelly ready to fight. Shelley then realized that Mary could and very take on these young beedrill. She had certainly trained her hard over the past few months. However, Shelley couldn't help but feel skeptic as a sudden cloak of fear seemed to wash over her.

Soon there was a giant swarm in front of them, ready to attack. Shelley sighed. Might a swell take advantage of the situation. she thought to herself. As Mary was poised to jump, Shelley gave out her first battle command for the day, "Mary, iron defence!"

The mawile put her arms in front of herself as her whole body began go shine with a metallic luster.

Just before the Mawile could be swarmed by the Beedrill, a beam of ice cut a swathe through the approaching horde of Bug-type Pokemon, those not caught in its icy embrace fleeing from the chilling cold and freezing of their comrades. Several of the Pokemon fell the the Forest ground, frozen stiff by the power of the Ice Beam, and from behind Shelley and Mary came a voice. "First rule of Bug-type Pokemon; Stop them before they can swarm you." Jackson stepped out from the heavy shade the Forest had afforded him thanks to its dense trees and heavy canopy, grinning at Shelley as Spike, his loyal Golduck, trailed alongside him, obviously having been the originator of the Ice Beam. "They tend to be rather harder to hit when they're all around, trying to get a piece of you."

Shelley braced herself for the incoming swarm. "Mary, Flash Ca-," her command was cut off by a giant beam of ice. One by one the Beedrill fell. Shelley quickly turned around and saw the man step from behind forest shade. In a way, she was quite relieved. She really didn't look forward to dealing with those beedrill. Mary on the other hand was looking quite annoyed. The mawile stomped up to the golduck with a pouty face and asked why didn't at least save one or two for her. Apparently she agitated the beedrill on purpose.

"Mary dear, be kind. He just saved you," Shelley told her pokemon. Mary just turned her head still pouting. "Hmmm. It seems that my mawile gets a little in over her head sometimes..."Shelley said ttrailing off. Finally she looked at the man before her. She guessed that he was bit older than herself. Finally she spoke to him. "I apologize for Mary, here. We are grateful that you came by when you did," Shelley told him with a playful smile. Mary then turned around to Shelley.
"Ma wi!" Mary protested. She wasn't feeling the least bit grateful. "Now now, Mary. Is that anyway a lady would act in front of these fine gentlemen?" Finally Mary calmed down a bit and forced a cute smile on her face. "That's my girl..." Shelley commented.

User ImageHad they been paying more attention, the woman with the foolhardy Mawile, and the man with the Golduck may have noticed the faint 'clicking' noise from deep within the forest. It was understandable that they hadn't though, it was a very quiet sound, and the flash of the camera would have paled in comparison to the energy that came with that impressive ice beam.
It just so happened that Thema had entered the Ilex forest a short while ago. Where had she come from? Goldenrod, or Azalea? Neither. She had just teleported here from a desert in the Hoenn region, hoping to catch some cute Paras or Spinarak shots. Catching the crushing defeat over the freshly hatched Beedrill instead was a well-timed coincidance, not to mention, amazing and somewhat intimidating. Thema was sure there would be some great pictures among these.
While she had every intention of meeting this pair, Thema first wanted to look through her new photographs. In the mean time, Shazam was resting with his back against a tree. Zip was napping and curled up around his egg. Zuki appeared to be quietly communicating with Stardust, who was pretending not to hear. And, Trapen had breeched the treeline that Thema had told her pokemon to stay behind.
"Traaapeen" [Heey, there] The oddly-coloured and -placed monster spoke as it neared the trainers and their free-pokemon. The shape of a Trapinches mouth did not allow it to be very expressive but, if it could, Trapen's slack mawl would be showing a friendly grin.
Though it was normally a level-headed pokemon, today Trapen just wasn't showing it. Perhaps he was as amazed by that show of talent as his master was? Just a few things were for sure, he would be attracting attention that Thema hadn't wanted, and he was probably putting himself into a lot of danger.

Spike simply grinned (an expression that looked quite strange on a Golduck's horned bill) at the Mawile, and simply crossed his arms, looking quite pleased with himself. He hadn't seen combat in quite a while, and he might have gone overkill on the Beedrill, but she would be singing quite a different tune right about now if the swarm had reached her. Jackson, meanwhile, echoed his Golduck's grin at the trainer and her Mawile's relationship - he could tell they'd been together for quite a while, if only because most trainer's with a new Mawile were still fidgety around the Pokemon and its large jaws. "No worries - I'm sure she would have been able to handle it, but I wanted to save you the trouble." He offered her his hand. "Jackson Vakarian, Goldenrod Gym Leader. Pleased to meet you." While Jackson was occupied with Shelley, Spike was more interested in the Trapinch working its way toward Mary and himself. His arms still crossed, he took a few steps to bridge the distance between itself and the little Ground-type. He leaned over slightly, over three foot taller than the two foot orange monster. "Golduuuuck . . . Goldgold duck? Duck Golduck?" [Hello there . . . are you lost? Only I haven't seen any of your kind here before.]

Shelley smiled again. The gym leader, eh? She had seen him a few times before, but never really met him. She wondered why she hadn't recognized who he was at first. Shelley hesitated for a second then replied to him. "I'm Shelley... Shelley Knight, also from Goldenrod," she hoped that he wouldn't recognize her name. She was the most popular dealer at the old Goldenrod casino before it was shut down a year ago due to serious scamming issues. Though she was a bit worried, she kept up her front.

Mary looked back at Spike. She wondered who he was talking to. The mawile then noticed the trapinch and turned her head slightly. She had never seen it's kind before and looked curious. Being her typical curious and bold self, Mary skipped up to the trapinch and gave it a cute smile.
"Ma!" Her greeting of this new pokemon was much more friendly than her greeting to Spike. It was probably because he hadn't ruined her fun like the golduck did.

Shelley continued. "So what is the gym leader of Goldenrod doing here in Ilex Forest? If you don't mind me asking. Casual stroll I presume?" She kept up her charm as she spoke.

User Image"Look at this one, Shazam...And these too!" Thema exclaimed softly as she scanned through the pictures on her digital camera. Shazam had come to her side to glance at the photos, but gained her attention by putting a hand on her shoulder. "Hmm?" Thema mumbled as she looked to her Kadabra. She turned off her camera, since it seemed he had something to say to her.
Shazam closed his eyes for a moment, allowing his thoughts to penetrate hers. He showed her an image of Trapen, fratenizing with the Golduck and Mawile, and then he pointed toward the pair of trainers and the pokemon. Thema stood and peeked at the two pokemon who had moved away from their trainers. Sure enough, Trapen had trekked some disance to be near them.
"What's he doing?" She whispered in a surprised and almost angered tone.
"Daabra Kadabrabra.." [Just a friendly bugger, I guess..] Shazam replied with a shrug.

"Piin..Pinch, trapinch trapinch, pinch. Pin!" [Ooh...No, I'm not lost, thanks..Hi!] Trapen replied. He went on, [We just came from the desert to take photos; we really admired that quick battle] Trapen told the pokemon, not knowing that they weren't even in a region with a desert. He sometimes got mixed up with all the teleporting.

Jackson, guessing Shelley didn't go for handshakes, crossed his arms and rocked back and forth on his feet. He quirked an eyebrow at her name, a bell ringing at the almost-familiar moniker, but decided he would remember in time if it were that important. At her questions, Jackson shrugged - most of the time he didn't have a reason for coming to Ilex, it was just a nice place to be. "You presume right. That, and I wanted to give Spike there a chance to stretch his legs, maybe my other Pokemon too. I promise they won't be too loud." Spike, meanwhile, was a little confused by Trapen's mention of a desert - as far as he knew, there were only two desert areas of note; the Orre region in general, and the Hoenn desert . . . since Orre was too far off for Trapen to say 'just', Spike guessed it was the latter. "Golgolduck? Duckgolgolduck - Golduck. Duckgolduck - duckgol." [The Hoenn desert? And I wouldn't call that a battle - not really. They had barely evolved, after all.]

Shelley looked at his golduck. She hoped that she would not need his help again. She looked back at Jackson. "Well, don't let me get in your way." Shelley said turning around. She wanted to get back to looking for pokemon. "Mary dear, come." Shelley instructed to her pokemon wanting to get at least something achieved today.

Mary turned around from the two pokemon and looked at Shelley. She wasn't sure if she wanted to go just yet.
"Ma mawi?" The pokemon followed her master but kept looking back at the others.

"Well, it was a pleasure to meet you." Shelley told him with a giggle in her voice as she looked back at him. Mary followed but not before turning around and giving the guy's a cute bow.

As Shelley looked ahead of her she noticed that one of the Beedrill on the ground that was only partially frozen was beginning to defrost. Mary seemed to notice it and skipped up to it and poked it's leg. The half frozen creature twitched. "Mary, please don't torment it." Shelley told the mawile. Mary turned around and made a face. The pokemon then put the large jaws on the back of her head around the frozen part of the beedrill's body. "Mary... What are you doing now?" Shelley hoped that she wouldn't cause another problem like earlier. The mawile grinned as she crushed the ice around the bug pokemon's body. The pokemon then attempted to move it's previously frozen legs.

"Mary...?" Shelley watched as the beedrill slowly stood up. It seemed to be fine except one of it's wings were badly hurt from its fall. Mary turned to Shelley.
"Mawile!" the pokemon said pointing to the beedrill. The bug pokemon seemed to look at Mary slightly confused. It tried to fly off but barely got its feet off the ground. "Mawile!" Mary said again. "Well what do you want me to do about it?" Shelley replied to her. The mawile just continued to give her a look. Shelley sighed. "Fine..." She hesitantly walked up to the bug pokemon. It looked at her and took a step backwards cautiously. Mary seemed to pat the beedrill trying to tell it that it will be okay. Shelley did the only thing that she could think of. She pulled one of the empty pokeballs out of her bag.

Jackson and Spike gave a small and (for once) sincere bow to Shelley and Mary as they moved to leave. "Likewise, Shelley. I hope to see you again." That said, Jackson grabbed a pair of Poke Balls from his belt, releasing Tumbler and Herald into the Forest so that the two could stretch their legs and join him in his stroll - that done, he also released the second pair of Poke Balls, Ruff and Vera the objectives this time. With all of his Pokemon free to do as they liked in the Forest, Jackson sat himself down on the dry grass of the Forest floor and leaned back against the support of a tree for little rest.
Tumbler and Ruff, mother and son respectively, were sitting nearby, Tumbler grooming the Wartortle's shell with an unmistakeably maternal touch, while Spike, Herald and Vera were having what looked like an impromptu dance competition - they either had a lot of energy to rid themselves of, or were simply in a silly mood.

Of course Shelley had the equipment to help treat the beedrill's wing, but she wondered if capturing it first would make it easier or only succeed in angering it. Finally she decided that she would have to move him to a different spot first, and through the convenience of a pokeball that could easily be done. This beedrill, though being one of the ones to recently evolve, was a bit bigger than the others. Carrying it would be a pain.

Shelley looked at the pokeball for a moment and shrugged. "Well here goes nothing..." she said as she tossed it at the pokemon. Being sucked up in the pokeball seemed to catch the beedrill a bit off guard. It seemed to struggle in the ball for a bit till it finally stopped. A smile formed on Shelley face as she walked up to the pokeball. Suddenly the ball started shaking again causing her to almost jump. After this last bit of fighting the pokeball finally let off a small dinging sound, indicating that the pokemon was caught. Shelley sighed in relief as she picked up the small sphere. She managed to turn around and see Jackson's pokemon playing and relaxing about. She smiled for she couldn't help but feel a bit envious of him.

Shelley had decided it was best to move a bit deeper in the woods with less people or pokemon. She finally found a small pond where she stopped. Mary seemed to run up to the water and splashed herself in the face. The mawile then turned around feeling refreshed. Shelley couldn't help but giggle as her pokemon did so. She then looked at the beedrill's pokeball and sighed. Best get this over with she thought as she released the bug pokemon from the sphere. As the beedrill emerged, it looked at Shelley with a blank stare. She couldn't tell if it was annoyed or calm or what so she approached him cautiously. Mary turned around and headed over to the beedrill to help. The mawile began talking to it, trying to keep it calm. Shelley then slowly reached her hand out to it and to her surprise she managed to touch its head. She then petted it softly and removed her hand.

The beedrill just continued to stare at her blankly not moving. This seemed to creep Shelley out a bit, but she tried to ignore it. She then reached in her bad and pulled out a few sitrus berries. She held them out in front of the beedrill. Finally, smelling the berried, it moved and lowered its head and ate the berries from her hand. Mary smiled to her master as things started looking good. Shelley petted it on the head again and the beedrill made a slight clicking sound, so she decided to finally brave touching its wings.

First, she reached back and barely touched the healthy wing. As she did it flicked back and fourth a bit, but the pokemon did not move or attack. She then pulled out a potion and sprayed the wounded wing but only slightly, trying to keep it from stinging. Shelley realized that its wings are quite delicate and felt good that she was helping it out. If left unattended, it would have probably eventually broke and then the beedrill wouldn't be able to fly.

After about fifteen minutes of careful treatment and comforting the beedrill, Shelley was finally finished. She urged the beedrill not to fly just yet, and surprisingly enough to Shelley, it actually listened to her. She then sat down on the soft grass next to the pond and yawned. She thought about what to name her new beedrill. Mary was telling stuff to the beedrill and the bug seemed to be listening to her intently.

While Mary was talking to the Beedrill, and before, when Shelley had been reassuring it, healing it, and finally catching it, Ruff had been watching interestedly - he didn't know very many people or Pokemon beyond the confines of Jackson's gym, and was thus curious about all outsiders. He had secreted himself in the pond, listening in, and when there seemed to be a lull in the conversation, he popped his head out of the water, looking at the two Pokemon with a grin on his face. "Wartortle!" [Hi!]

[Wouldn't be interested in a Wartortle, would you?]

Shelley had decided on a fitting name for the beedrill. She named him after her little brother, De'tra.
Mary and De'tra seemed to turn around when they heard an unfamiliar voice. There, in the water was a warturtle. Shelley seemed to notice it as well and stood up in alarm. Mary walked to the water's edge and waved to it. She took it as friendly so she decided it would only be courteous to be friendly in return.

"Mawile!" she greeted. De'tra seemed to nod to the water pokemon, but decided to stay silent. Shelley noticed her pokemon's friendliness towards the new pokemon and relaxed a bit. She had to admit that she had never seen a warturtle before so she did feel a bit curious.

Seeing that he hadn't been smacked with a Flash Cannon or Twineedle, Ruff took that to mean Mary and De'tra didn't mind his being there. He clambered out of the pond, shaking a bit of pond weed back to where it had came, and grinned at the two. He pointed toward Shelley, having observed her treating of De'tra's wing injury. "Warwartortle Wartortle!" [Your trainer seems mighty handy at treating injuries!] He rubbed his neck, a little embarrassed. "Tortlewar Wartortle . . ." [Jackson tries, but he's no doctor . . .]

[Fair enough.]
