So I have two different litters, one of each litter seems to have a problem with sneezing. So you know, one of the mama rats used to sneeze a bit but we're sure she wasn't sick, she was just sensitive to what is in the air.

One of the rats is making a deep 'chuckling' noise in chest chest, and has sneezing fits...no discharge from nose, no other signs of illness.

Now the other rat sneezes a lot, and sounds like there's something stuck in his nose, and again, no discharge but this one seems to be less squirrel-y than his brothers, when they're out to play he's hesitant and just wants to cuddle more than anything.

We do not have the money to take them to a vet but I'm so worried about my babies! Is there anything I can do for them? Any home remedies to decongest them? sad

You can try giving the affected babies a dark chocolate chip (just a tiny one) if they are eating solids. You can also try bringing the baby into a very steamy room, as the steam can help. If it persists, they should really go to the vet as meds may be needed. Baytril is usually prescribed if the rat is big enough, but you can only get it with a prescription.User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Thank you! I've heard dark chocolate chips do help, and they are eating solids. I guess I'll cut them into halves and give it a try!
Hmm, I haven't heard the steam suggestion before...I guess I could try that too.
Is it ever okay for rats to sneeze? I heard sometimes it's just a habit, or allergies...that's really what I'm starting to think with these guys.

Occasional sneezes are nothing to worry about, I'd think. But if they are persistent and there is wheezing and clicking, I'd worry.User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
