Hello! Welcome to my very first quest thread for Lunaria. I'm a total newbie here and have been doing my best to come up with a concept for here, but I know I've probably made loads of mistakes. So, whatever critique you have to offer, I'll take it!

Username: L~Chan
Payment Method: Gold or RL, whatever comes first. I'll probably have more luck with RL...
Do you agree?: Boy howdie! Unless I'm agreeing to getting naked, that might be bad for both parties...

Basic Information

Name: Kal Dae-Hyun (pronounced Dey-HyUhn)

  • "Kal" being the family name, "Dae-Hyun" meaning 'Great and Honor', named that in the hope he would become a great and honorable man like his father and older brothers, and hopefully work just as hard.

Origin: Korean
Age: 18
Gender: Male

Allegiance: Noble

  • Reasons: His family is extremely neutral over the affair, considering they all think differently about it, but Dae-Hyun feels like it's his path in life to serve for the cause of change, and nothing else felt more right to him than the idea of being a Noble. His reasoning is based solely on a gut feeling, and he figures as things progress he'll find some real reason that this path is right for him, but as it stands he's fine going off of his gut.

What can he contribute?: Dae-Hyun does exactly as he's told to the fullest of his ability without question, like any typical obedient soldier. He's a tank of pure brute force that's more than willing to keep going until he's told to stop (or until he drops dead, whatever's going to come first), and a mind that's itching to discover newer possibilities.

Path: Warrior
Fighting Style/Weapon: Dae-Hyun doesn't necessarily have a fighting style, but you could compare the way he moves and fights to Taekkyeon- however, his movements are much less fluid and swift. He focuses more on trying to flip or down his opponent than kick them square in the face and keep them at a distance. His weapon is a Flying Guillotine. It can be used in both close and ranged combat; it’s simple and light-weight, which is what Dae prefers, and it’s something he doesn’t have to be heavily reliant on (in his own opinion). He came across the weapon as he was traveling and bought it out of curiosity, when he’d learned to use it another one of his ‘gut feelings’ told him that it felt right.

Personality:

Hard-Working: If you tell Dae-Hyun to do something, he'll do it, and he'll do a damn fine job of it. In his family, everyone works hard, gets dirty, and if you're lucky get some cuts and bruises to prove you did good, and you won't complain about it. Growing up, he was always busy doing some type of labor to where now Dae-Hyun doesn't feel right unless he's busy doing something. He doesn't mind doing grunt work or hammering something back together, sometimes he'll even volunteer, and if he's being helpful doing it, it's a bonus.

Sensitive: Though not outwardly expressed, as he takes after the habits of his father and oldest brother, Dae-Hyun is a sensitive man who cares greatly about others and what they think. In turn, he's sensitive to what other people say about him, feeling particularly put-off when someone points out something about himself he feels insecure about (whatever that may be always depends), so he can easily become offended by what a person may say about himself, no matter how innocent the intent. He tries to say things people want to hear so he won't upset them (often times in his case, not say anything at all), or tell them the right things, even if he doesn't mean it.

Modest/Awkward?: When it comes to certain things like public displays of affection, getting naked in front of people, or even sharing a bed, Dae-Hyun can get extremely uncomfortable. It's not that he was lacking in that kind of exposure through his life- his mother was exceptionally loving and he's shared baths and a bed with his brothers before, he just plain doesn't like it. Dae-Hyun has always tried to avoid it and still does, and if it's unavoidable he'll keep as far away from anyone else involved (see 'everyone naked in the same room') as possible.
He feels most uncomfortable with displays of affection, one half being because he can't express it properly back, and the other half being he wouldn't know where to begin in dealing with it. Dae-Hyun is just overall awkward.

Uncommunicative: Dae-Hyun doesn't talk much, you're actually lucky if you can get him to talk at all. He has a hard time expressing himself and what he thinks, mainly because growing up things were usually understood in the family, and no one talked about how they were feeling or made any attempt to do so, so any time spent not trying to do that is time well spent. It makes him frustrated that he can't get out what he's thinking/feeling in an appropriate manner, which has him scowling or looking completely unapproachable half the time. Unfortunately, it's become an unintentional default for his face.
Because he's more or less given up on trying to correct this, Dae-Hyun, when he's in a situation where he has to talk, will abbreviate his words or look for the shortest response possible (causing more scowling, one day his face will just get stuck like that, assuming it hasn't already) so he can stop conversing as quick as he can. It's why he likes yes or no questions the best.

Immature: Though he definitely doesn't purposefully mean to be, Dae-Hyun can be incredibly immature. It has a lot to do with his inability to properly express himself and growing up in a house where anything went, with very little personal growth. His idea of fun is to roll around in mud, and ride on a person's nerves. He has a very simple sense of humor, and though he can be told time and time again that what he's doing is immature and he needs to shape up, it doesn't get through. Dae-Hyun's immaturity seems to only shine among people he's comfortable with and wants to try and 'impress'.

Hobbies:

Crafting: Dae-Hyun likes to work with his hands, and though he needs more work at it, he loves to make small things. It was a hobby proposed to him by his brother, as something to occupy his time when he couldn't go out and work with their father, and he took a liking to it quickly when he started. It's probably the only time he won't look like he wants to rip your head off, because he's too busy concentrating on intricate details that he's able to understand instead of his own feelings. Often times if he likes someone enough, he'll make them something, of course it's nothing to brag over. His hands are still very clumsy, but it's the thought that counts.

Traveling: Since his family believes that at a certain age a person needs to leave the nest and spread their wings to learn to be on their own, Dae-Hyun grew to love traveling far distances by doing just what his family suggested- leave the nest. He's been traveling since he was 16, when he decided it was time to find his calling, and it hasn't gotten old to him yet. He loves to see new places and things, and likes being on his own and feeling independent and without expectation. When he stays in one place for too long, he starts to get a sensation of feeling trapped or tied down. So, usually, he’s not normally caught in one place for too long, but he has come to accept the idea that he can’t always be out wandering around.

Training: Training to Dae-Hyun is his only outlet for all the feelings he can't express, he also tries to keep up his training so that he can feel strong and useful to his friends. Dae doesn't necessarily find training to be fun or entertaining, but sees it as more of an obligation he doesn't mind doing that gets rid of that built up pressure of being unable to communicate effectively. Training is another one of those things that, when he’s doing it, he seems more relaxed and looks less like he wants to tear you apart. It takes everything off of his mind- like his own form of meditation; a brutal, violent, kind of meditation.

Appearance:
Just in case I go for semi-custom, which I more than likely will, these are just some light guidelines to what he should look like. Nothing is really set in stone aside from his rrrr face.

  • Hair: Short? I would say anything mid-neck up is a good length, and if it had to be any longer it would be pulled back, but it all depends on what looks better. As long as it isn't extremely long I could care less. o u o Ask for a color, well, whatever is cool.

  • Eyes: Definitely full of artistic freedom, I was thinking something dark, but whatever is going to look good on him. They have to look judging, though. The first thing a person should hear when looking into his eyes is RRRRRRRRR.

  • Skin: A darrrrrrk color however Lunarian skin workssss < u >

  • Body Type: Well-toned, like he's obviously worked out, but not extremely muscled. Also he should be tall, we're talking holy crap tall. That's probably the only specific thing I care about, because to me scary-looking guys=tall as hell. I don't know. /nerd

  • Clothes: You know what, whatever's fine. Maybe something in dark blue and dirty orange colors, but it's totally up to you. xD I tried really hard to find some sort of example of Korean clothing, but I'm really terrible at it. So, artistic freedom all around! I imagine, though, that whatever he was wearing as a shirt it would have no sleeves and be open, since Dae-Hyun is thug like that. But you do what you want, baby.

  • Accessories: Accessories are for girls. |C I kid, more artistic freedom. If something looks good on him, go for it. He wouldn't wear anything flashy or big, or a lot of things, they'd only get in the way.

  • Unique Attributes: Probably some scars on his chest or his face? He seems like the kind of guy to get a scar or two, but that's just an idea.

  • Anything Else?: Well, he's gotta have a pissed-off looking face. He's just gotta.

Family

Jin Kyong- Mother; 46. A boar of a woman, short and hearty. She's loud, loving, and isn't afraid to speak her mind. She will command authority when she wants to be heard- a habit she picked up while trying to raise a pack of boys- and will have the last word. She loves to cook big meals and doesn't mind going out and killing the meat herself, convinced it tastes just that much better when she does.

Hyo- Father; 50. A tall, strong, and silent man. Always stern and serious, and obviously the head of the household even with his wife's constant hold on command. He's a hard worker and a man of his word. Doesn't usually hold a conversation, but can say more with his actions than he ever could with his words. Clearly the main influence on the personalities of all his sons.

Kang-Dae- Oldest brother; 23. Just as stern and hardworking as his father. He doesn't spend much time with his younger brothers, but works night and day alongside Hyo. He has no sense of humor, and greatly admires his father.

Kwang-Sun- Second oldest brother; 20. Could be considered the black sheep, as he hardly resembles anyone in personality or physically of his family members. Is slight in build, shorter in height than his brothers, yet taller than his mother, and is emotional. He's usually getting into arguments with Dae-Hyun mostly because they're close in age. Acts more like the baby of the family.

History:

Dae-Hyun's history isn't complicated or interesting, to say the least. Even though he was born the youngest member of the family he was treated by his brothers, and parents, as if he were the same age. It didn't bother him since there was no such thing as being babied in his household. Growing up he was never picked on by either of his brothers, but he did get into fights with his brother Kwang-sun; Dae-Hyun couldn't tell that his brother was more emotional than the other people in his family because, well, he was the only one and Dae is a daft boy. But from all the constant butting-of-heads the two boys shared, it's what caused Dae to develop his more sensitive side that's forever struggling to try and express itself. He's still not entirely sure how that happened.

All three boys, from a young age, were made to help their father work to support the family. Dae didn't mind the having to wake up early, haul heavy loads, and do painful manual labor (unlike, of course, his brother Kwang who would whine and complain the entire time. Out of the kindness of his heart Dae would usually do his work for him) because that's just how things were, and that's how things would be for most of all his childhood to adulthood.

When Dae-Hyun turned 16 his mother told him that eventually he would have to leave the nest and learn to help himself, because no one was going to help him be a man out in the real world. It didn't scare him or concern him to think that one day he would have to find his own bearings, and he very much welcomed the idea. It wasn't long after that Dae started growing restless at home and decided to venture off to find where he belonged in life, and become a real man. Not necessarily what his parents had in mind, but they weren't going to stop him (in fact, they were quite proud. A little surprised, but proud). They felt like they'd instilled good morals into their youngest son, and he was the first of them to actually want leave home, so they were confident that he would do just fine on his own.

Though it took him some time to get used to being on his own, Dae-Hyun doesn't mind it (like most things. He's actually quite happy to be out of his house; don't ever tell his parents but they're kind of no fun) and has found he takes incredible joy in just traveling around, helping people he doesn't know, and experiencing new things in places he's not prone to staying in for too long.

Extra Tidbits!

Flying Guillotine: One of the better examples I can find of it in action (and the- the thing that made me want it as a weapon....) Best ex. of it in use starts at 1:50, if you're impatient.
WAHAHA I found the video I wanted. Fight with the guillotine starts at 2:05. Woosh woosh that weapon is cool.

Taekkyeon: Why is it so hard to find videos of examples of stuff I need hrrrrg Sweep, kick, kick kick, dodge, jump! D8<

Good start with the name and the reasoning behind his going with the Nobles. I rather like that it's just a "gut feeling" that he's going with. His weapon/fighting style is simple, yet still fits him, which I like. It's simplicity makes it more interesting. C:

I have to say, his personality is quite endearing. He's a bit of a rough and tumble sort of guy, with an awkward and sensitive sort of way of living, which I enjoy. I like that he's socially uncommunicative, unsure, and awkward. The traits seem to work well together, and you have a nice balance between flaws and virtures.

I'd like to see a bit more with his hobbies, since they seem a bit basic at the moment. Simplicity is still good, but maybe just add a bit more diversity to them? C:

His appearance is good, although Lunarian's aren't necessarily "tan." Their kind of tan is more of an orange rather than a brown, so just be cautious of that.

Family is good, but obviously you need to finish your history before I can critique it. =)

Very good job so far; I really enjoy your character! <3

Thanks for the critique, Kuro~ I'm glad you like his personality and everything. Good to hear it all fits together to you. |D;;

I'll add more to the hobbies, then, and work on his history more orz I've been having trouble with it, ahaha.
