Even outside the realm of tattoos and piercings, there is a lot of fuss about what is "work-appropriate". If people can't even decide what pants should be worn in the office, how can we know which visible body modifications will be acceptable in our next job interview, or next Monday at work?

I don't know, so... please share your experiences! whee

-Are the standards gender-related? Are men with piercings frowned upon when working in offices?

At my high school, there were teachers who sometimes showed their tattoos, but usually covered them with long pants/sleeves (it's cooold!) I currently work in a grocery store, and the dress code policy says "no visible tattoos", but a few of my co-workers have them (including the guy who hired me) and nobody seems to mind.

Most workplaces are pretty fair when it comes to males or females having piercings.. but some places do play favourites. D;

When I was a manager at Mc.Donalds I looked like this that was actually taken just outside of work in my uniform.. with my labret, nose, septum hidden, tongue piercing in my mouth, 00 glass plugs, and 5 other ear piercings are visible on that ear... oh and the other ear was stretched to a 00 with 4 other piercings.
Work didn't really like it.. but another person who worked there that was higher up then me and a wrist tattoo; one behind her ear, monroe pierced, and her nose.. no one cared about her.
Then crew would get a piercing the store manager would say they have to hide it then they'd say "oh but cheryl and ___ don't have them and they're managers" and I'd be the only one told to take them out. >___>;
I ended up swapping my labret into a small gem (since that's what the other girl had in her monroe).. then she complained about my ears.. so I got clear beads for EVERYTHING; then she still complained..
I did my job fine; customers didn't complain about me.. I was actually one of the best people at the store when it came to mystery shops and customer compliments.. but apparently holes in my face made that not matter.

Funny story though; I got HIRED with my ears stretched and my nose pierced and they didn't care.. but their mind changed over time. D;
Needless to say I don't work there anymore.. the other girl still does however.
I didn't get fired because of my piercings.. but apparently me being stubborn about them added heat to that fire.. XD

I've heard that a lot, that the manager playing favourites is more important than the actual rules.

our policy is really vague and stupid, and basically it states that appearance must be conservative and is subject to manager's discretion. :/ i've been told to change my hair from emerald green after a week, but no one says bupkis about my tattoos or my lobes, and both are equally as visible (i don't wear long sleeves at work - running around = too warm).

but as far as i know, i've never had anyone complain about any of my mods to my boss.

My dress code is minimal piercings. But no one cares.

When I got hired in my interview me and the old GM just chatted about piercings and tattoos.

Then he got fired. With the new manager hes never said anything. Hes made a few jokes but I've proven my self as a hard worker, so my piercings don't matter.

And we use my ear lobes as a magic trick! I have soft pink silicone eyelets which blend into my eas. We cover my hair with my ears, stick a marker through and then pull the hair away and the kids are all amazed.

It honestly just depends on the workplace itself. Where I work everyone has tattoos (Most visible). I have a nose ring, and they don't care. One girl has a lip ring, and they don't care. I work at Kohl's, so that's a bit surprising.

Honestly, I think the rule of thumb would be to cover any tattoos for interviews and replace a piercing hole with the clear fillers or whatever they're called. If you get the job you can talk to your boss about what's appropriate. It also shows how serious you are about the job.

So, would a polite "Could you please tell me about your policy on ____, I'd like to bring this up now to prevent any future problems" sound responsible or guilty?

I think it really depends on where you live, and how willing you are to hide your mods.

I worked at an Outback Steakhouse for over a year with 5/8" lobes as well as a second set that were stretched to 0g. I had my industrial pierced at one point, my conch, and my tragus. I also had 2 monroe piercings, a septum, and a dermal anchor right on my chest.

I bought skin-tone plugs for my 5/8" holes, wore these tacky diamond looking plugs in the second one, pushed up my septum, and wore clear retainers in my monroes.

Keep in mind, this is Beaufort, SC. A retirement community, and just an overall conservative town. I was literally the only employee with more than standard ear piercings because I was good at hiding what I have. The managers didn't even know I had piercings until after like 6 months of me having worked there.

Did they like them? No. Was I a valuable employee? Yes. After 6 months, I was the longest lasting girl, and I was good at what I did. They knew not to complain.

So.. in a way, it's about your work ethic too. About a year into that job, one of the other girls I worked with had her nostril pierced, and wore a clear retainer in it. As soon as my boss found out, he made her take it out.. even though you couldn't see it. Was she a valuable employee? No way. She called out all the time, and was high the times she did work.

Responsible. For job interviews I always take out all my visible piercings, then I ask that question. When they ask why I tell them I do have visible piercings but I am comfortable with removing them in the work place if it is required. Most employers have been impressed with my willingness to do so and be open about it.

Even if you are willing, some places just will not allow them.
I worked at a candy store. Bright colors and all that jazz, I wasn't allowed t have any sort of facial piercings and everything else had to be toned down. (Eyemakeup and nails couldn't be crazy, they had to be minimal and plain.)
Even though I hid my monroe, I was still told I cannot have it by my BM. He was dead set on following company policy, which was no visible tattoos or face piercings.

I was curious with a branch off of this topic, wanting to ask the question of where you all work?
I see many of you have mentioned the places, but not all. And maybe things have changed since your original post, and you work somewhere else now.

On topic - I completely agree it has almost everything to due with work ethic. Employers assume that your looks define you as a worker, and for some reason, they misinterpret creativity, with poor work ethic, or a rebellious/trouble-making demeanor. (wow that was a run-on sentence!)
I'm a lunch lady at a college, and my boss is admittedly, a total druggie. But I'm the responsible one for my frequent hair dying, and not even visible piercings. I hate my job, uniform, customers...and want a new job, but it seems hard to come across one these days, no matter how you look.
So, that is why I am curious about where you guys work.
