I don't know about everyone else, but when I make my attempts to see auras and the silhouettes of guides I have to let my vision relax and go slightly out of focus

...as you would in order to view the images hidden within the pictures at this site. The patters will reveil themselves as if in 3d. (although for some they might appear inside-out, or a mold/negative of the 3d image)
