Lottie usually wasn’t one to be sticking her nose where it didn’t belong. But when the little white rabbit dashed throughout the woodlands screaming at the top of his lungs ‘the humans are here! The humans are here! We’re all doomed,’ she decided to do some investigation. It probably wasn’t very smart of her to venture away from her homelands and safety of the dense forests to go searching for any Twolegs that she might find. But Lottie was a curious creature especially when it came to the human species. She snorted and raised her head up proudly as passing forest dwellers gave her a roll of the eyes or shake of the head. She didn’t care what they had to say and in fact ignored a lot of them.

Lottie wasn’t scared or nervous about coming in contact with a human. In fact the idea was quite exciting and overwhelming that urged to see one very soon. Though very rarely did they travel this far from their little village in the eastern pass. She picked up her pace to a trot and tossed her brown mane back into the breeze. It was a beautiful day out with the sun beaming it’s rays up above in the cloudless sky. A light breeze here and there that tickled her mane and tail as she moved deeper and deeper into the unfamiliar woods. What could go wrong? She snorted once again and stirred up the earth with her powerful hooves. It was a perfect day. And soon Lottie would show the other inhabitants that humans shouldn’t be THAT feared. After all she knew that she was quite faster than they were and their domesticated horses.

Baringa was pacing the confines of his relatively large paddock, in most terms it would have been called small, but out here, in the woods, with the Humans Cabin attatched to one side, it was larger than most would be in the dense trees, although there was the odd couple of treestumps, remnants of the trees that were cut to build the paddock and the cabin.

Baringa's ears twitched constantly, this woodland was far farr distant from where he'd been born, and every sound was new and exciting, the birds sang differently, even down the the lowly sparrows chirping on the roof of the human dwelling. Suddenly he focussed his ears on one spot *was that hoofbeats i heard?!* he thought. On the spur of the moment, he decided to neigh out, loud and clear "I'M HERE! HELLO?!"

Lottie paused briefly with her auds perched forwards as she heard an unfamiliar voice. She cocked her head to the side and blinked her pale optics a couple times before continuing forwards. She didn’t think that the humans dwelled this close to their homelands. Had they moved so quickly and without notice? Very little forest dwellers ventured this deeply into the woodlands either so it shouldn’t have been a surprise to come across the humans so quickly.

She felt a thrill as she followed the direction in which the voice came from. It was clearly another horse and probably a tamed one that had been captured by the humans. Lottie advanced with caution but with curious eyes as she looked around. She pushed herself out from the safety of the shadows and dense forest to the back edge of the fence that contained the stallion. She lowered her head with nostrils flaring as she sniffed the wooden planks that made up the fence. Her soft eyes shifted from the fence to the stallion inside. She thought that domesticated horses would look different but the male did not. She raised her head and cocked it to the side as she stared at him. What was she to say?

“H-hello…?” her voice squeaked out. Lottie snorted and pulled her head back before kicking her hooves on the ground in irritation to herself. “What are you doing in there?” she asked. Lottie flicked her tail as she looked at the stallion. She felt bad for her own kind being captured by the humans and being treated as house pets. But he looked like had had once been free or yearned to be.

Baringa snorted in surprise as the voice of a mare rang out, sweet music to his ears, he turned as the voice had come from behind him, there in front of him was a most beautiful chestnut brown mare, her blaze, white as pure snow, her stockings delicate yet strong "are you the princess of the forest?" he asked her "for you must surely be the loveliest creature i've ever laid eyes on!"

He stared and forgot for a breif minute she'd asked him a question. "OH.. the men caught me as a mostly grown colt, i'd ventured away from my herd, as all young stallions will" he stated matter of factly "i was brought here, me and the man here, we travelled for so long before settling down here a short time ago" he said, as if this explained everything. All the while he'd been talking, he had been moving forwards to the gaps in the fencing, his nose working hard, inhaling her scent, enjoying the sight of her.

Lottie snorted and reared her head back as she looked at the stallion. Her nostrils flared, as she could smell the familiar scent of human coming from his body. Her ears flattened and her lips parted as she heard his sweet suave voice that had already spoke a flirtation phase to her. Lottie sighed and rolled her eyes for a quick second before stepping back from the fence. “So you were captured by them?” she snorted and wriggled her nose. Lottie hated it when horses were captured by the humans and then tamed. No wild creature should be tamed or sold. This land was made for the wild and free. And here Lottie would always live.

Lottie’s eyes wandered to what seemed to be where the human lived. Her ears perched forwards and her tail flickered in between her hind legs as she began to walk around the side of the fence line, but keeping some attention on the stallion inside. She had noticed that he was staring back at her. Why? Lottie quickly glanced behind and beside her to make sure nothing was hiding or walking with her. Thankfully nothing was. So why was this stallion staring at her? She looked back at him as she moved along the perimeter of the fenced in paddock. “Why are you looking at me like that?” she asked cocking her head to the side. Lottie stopped and stepped closer to the fence. She lifted her head so that her chin barely touched the top of the fence as she looked at the stallion. “What is your name?” she asked him softly.

Baringa nodded, his nose flaring, she smelled so sweet, much better than the stale sweaty human he normally spent his time with. "Yes Ma'am captured but never broken, the man .. he's my friend we...understnd each other's needs i guess" he said, looking over at the cabin when the mare did and sighing a little.

His skin twitched as the mare came closer, his tail lashed to keep the few flies off, his ears worked between focussing on the mare, and the cabin. The very prescence of her made him feel like his blood was on fire, in a good way, he closed hsi eyes briefly and took a deep breath. "you're just so beautiful ma'am, i cant help BUT look at you" He smiled a stunnign smile as she perched her chin on the top rail of the fencing. "I'm Baringa Ma'am, and what might your name be?" he asked "i'm sure it will be as sweet as your fair self*

Lottie snorted softly while shaking her head and curving her neckline as she raised her head. This stallion looked like a love-stricken yearling as he stared at her. It didn’t come as a surprise to Lottie because she had come across plenty of stallions wandering throughout the plains and woodlands. However it did come across a nuisance and Lottie was almost quickly annoyed by it.

“Lottie,” she stretched out her neck again towards the fence. Her nostrils flared at the human odor that came from Baringa and it was almost just as strong as his natural scent. “My name is Lottie,” she spoke softly as she rested the bottom of her head against the fence again. Her ears swiveled and then perched forwards as her eyes drew onto the cabin again. There sure was a lot of noise coming from there. She raised her head and flicked her tail in curiosity. Lottie did come here to see the humans after all. She tossed her mane back to get a couple strands away from her eyes as she stepped back from the fence. She quickly glanced at Baringa before walking along the fence towards the cabin.

“Don’t you ever want to leave?” she asked making light conversation with the stallion as she kept a wary eye at the cabin. “You shouldn’t have to put up with humans,” Lottie said. She paused as her eyes looked at Baringa. She felt bad for him because he was cooped up in a tiny paddock. “Don’t you remember what freedom tasted like?” she asked him. Lottie stared at him for a brief moment before continuing towards the cabin.

Baringa smiled "there, i said that your name was as pretty as you are, and i was right... Lottie...Lottie.... why the name just rolls off the tongue so sweetly" he said flirtingly. His ears flicked backwards slightly at the clanging and the noise from the cabin, but his focus was taken by the mare on the other side of the fence.

"Freedom?" he asked "i guess...well i haven't really thought about it much lately i suppose, the Man gives me food, water, shelter, keeps predators away just with his stench ... now THAT is impressive, i've only ever seen those little black and white creatures with the large flat tails do that trick before" he said to her question. He followed Lottie along the fenceline, towards the cabin, suddenly he had a sickening feeling as he realised what the sounds from the cabin were. "Lottie, you have to get out of here.... NOW... before he comes outside, trust me, GO!" he said urgently, knwoing that the sounds the Man was making inside were the things he did before going out on a hunt....for other horses.. Usually the Man used a different horse to ride to go capture others, but here...there was just Baringa.. and he did NOT want to be the one to have to chase Lottie down, or others for that matter

“Why? I see nothing wrong. Clearly your human is busy,” Lottie argued as she glanced away from the cabin and towards Baringa who seemed worried for her safety of continuing her curiosity. The noise had become increasingly louder and intrigued the young mare for some more looking on. She wanted to see what humans did when not out on the run for other horses or meat. She wanted to know what a human did in an average day. She pulled her ears back and dipped her head down as she walked beside the paddock closer towards the cabin where the human was making quite the raucous.

“I’ll be fine. You shouldn’t worry about me, stallion.” Her voice barely a whisper as she glanced over her shoulder at Baringa. She snorted and flicked her tail before turning her head around. “What’s the most he can do? There’s no way he’ll be able to catch me,” she grinned. Lottie dared the human to try to catch a wild mare like herself. He would get nowhere and she wouldn’t be his trophy.

Baringa backed nervously "Lottie my dear, please" he said, ears twitching all over the place as he struggled with conflicting thoughts. He closed his eyes and thought for a brief second.

Meanwhile the Man was gathering his traps, as well as hsi ropes and hobbles. He planned to take the stallion out into the woods and do some fur trapping, the only reason he came really. He was a lasy man and trapped in the summer, rather than the winter, he knew the hides would be worth less per crature, but also that there would be more creatures about at this time of year. He happened to clance out of the window and caught a flash of brown and got excited *a horse out here? no wonder the stallion was riled up* he thought, slowly exiting the Cabin from the rear entrance. He swirled his lasso quietly and moved around intending to capture the slinet creeping horse.

Baringa snapped out of his thoughts as the soudns in the cabin stopped "Lottie RUN!" he yelled, spinning around to see the Man coming up around the paddock, trying to sneak behind Lottie who was ever curious about the cabin. What Baringa did next surprised himself, as well as the Man, he ran and charged at the fence, intending to just frighten the man and make him drop his lasso, however, his hooves slipped on the slick grass beside the fence and he went crashing through rotten wood, the man not haveing repaired the existing fencing. Baringa was startled, and stared down ad the man underneath him, he tried to get up as gently as he could, sniffing the unconcious figure he moved to walk off, wincing as his leg gave way. "must have strained something" he mumbled, shying away from the fence and the man, backwards back into the paddock.

It happened all too quickly for Lottie to react. When she saw the human she was mixed with nervous curiosity and fear. Baringa had told her to run but her legs had turned stiff and didn’t listen to his commanding voice. Instead the young mare stood where she was. Lottie felt like a complete idiot as she just stared at the motionless human on the ground. The stallion had fallen and broken the fence but had also probably injured the human more than he had intended to. Lottie finally stepped forwards with her neck stretched out and nostrils flaring as she stepped closer to the human. The end of her snout brushed against his neck, as she smelled the human’s hair. There was a strange odor coming from the human that made her nose tingle and feel oddly nauseous. Lottie snorted and raised her head with her eyes quickly fixing on Baringa.

“Why?” was the only word that escaped from her vocals and almost a complete whisper. She wasn’t sure if she should be amazed or down right shocked of the event that happened. Either way the fence had been broken and the stallion was free. Lottie then stepped into the paddock as she walked closer to Baringa. Her eyes looked him over to see if he had any cuts or scrapes from the fall. “Are you okay?” she asked walking up along his side and circled him. There was a reassuring smile on her lips as her soft pale eyes looked into his optics.

She stopped circling him then and stood at his side. She quickly glanced at the human on the ground and then back to Baringa. For being a domesticated horse this stallion sure had quite the strength.

Baringa shied further away from the unconcious man "i...i dont know, i couldn't let the man catch you, and ....i .. i slipped, the fence was rotten ... i didn't mean to" he said, moving further away, limping.

He couldn't think straight right know, adrenealine and fear taking over his brain a little, he nearly ignored the circling mare "i..i think i'm alright, just twisted hy hock a little" he said following her reassuring gaze. He closed his eyes breifly and took a deep breath, when he opened them again she'd stopped, and was glancing between him and the Human.

On the ground the human moaned and stirred a little, it was obvious he was hurt, but maybe not too badly.

"What do you say we get out of here?" Baringa said to Lottie, now that he knew the Man would likely be alright he recovered himself a little "what an idea, a Stallion running away with a Mare" he joked.

Lottie knew that it was in the best intentions that they had to leave before the man awakened. She didn’t think that the human was in critical health because he was already starting to stir and moaned a couple times in pain. Eventually he would awake and find neither the mare nor his horse inside the paddock. She pulled her head back and tossed her long flowing mane in the breeze as she glanced to Baringa. “Don’t have to tell me twice,” she grinned and crackled a low chuckle before heading towards the decaying fence where the stallion had fallen. She dipped her head down with nostrils flaring as the human’s odor filled her nose. She wriggled her nose around a bit as she gently nudged the human’s head back and forth. He would be fine and in a couple hours he would be mobile. She quickly glanced to Baringa with a reassuring smile. “Let’s go,” she said and lifted her head. Lottie continued and walked further away from the almost motionless human.

“This way Baringa. I’ll take you to my small herd,” she told him. “From there my Father will decide what to do with you,” Lottie said as she looked at him. If Baringa had been captivated for so long she figured that he would die in a couple days. This world was unfair and only the strongest in body and mind survived. She began to walk around the fence back the way she came from.

baringa followed behind Lottie carefully, still nervous of the fence and the Man, his skin twitched when she nosed at the Man, even he'd never done that, they'd had a healthy respect for each other, but were never really affectionate. He hoped that the Man didn't try and find him again.

He stepped lightly over the fence "wait, your father?! er...Lottie... thats rushing it a bit isn't it?!" he joked after a while, he was glad they were out of sight of the cabin. "Lottie is this herd far?" he asked "i mean, we dont want the Man coming to your herd looking for me" he worried.

Lottie grimaced as she looked to Baringa as he joked with her but she said nothing as she led the stallion towards her herd. Her nostrils flared as she breathed in deeply with each gait to bring her closer and closer back to her homelands. In a way it was a relief to be leaving the human behind but she did hope the best for him. Lottie glanced over her shoulder and snorted as the cabin was in the distance behind them in the growth of trees. She figured that the man would wake up sooner or later with a headache and some pain in his joints. Her eyes quickly glanced to Baringa and she wondered how he felt. The man had taken care of him for years and now Baringa was leaving him in the dust. But now Baringa could feel freedom and be a true wild, spirited horse.

“Not much farther,” she told him as she turned her head around. They galloped out of the forests and now hurried across a small meadow. “Just below that hill,” she nodded her head to where the earth had risen. The young mare threw back her head and neighed loudly in hopes that she would get a familiar response. Her voice carried out through the gentle breeze and it didn’t take long for another horse’s cry to respond.

Lottie slowed her gait to a canter and soon to a trot as she came on top of the hill. Below grazed a herd of six horses led by a chestnut stallion. He bobbed his head up and down to greet his daughter. It felt so good to see the familiar faces of her herd. Lottie looked to Baringa and her smile seemed to widen.

“Welcome home,” she said softly. Her eyes looked around to the puffy clouds up in the sky to the blades of grass that swayed with the wind.
