Rukia sat quietly in front of the cave she and Ichigo had opted to settle in once they'd returned to the Seireitei. She felt certain of what was in her belly, and the very idea excited her as much as it fascinated her, and even frightened her a bit. Pregnancies were rare in the Seireitei, that was no real secret, that the pack very rarely gave birth to their own. Rukia had no real doubts that she was now pregnant, for the first time in her life, and that these little lives growing inside of her would be of great importance to the Seireitei, as one of the rare Seireitei blood clutches, as the offspring of the Interim Commander, and as the offspring of two parents who loved each other.
Rukia smiled as she watched the sun slowly crest the cliff that formed the eastern wall of the Seireitei valley. Children. Hers, and Ichigo's. While that thought was thrilling, she had no real idea what pregnancy and birth were like. She'd never had kids of her own, she had yet to meet someone in the Seireitei or one of the tributary families, like Ichigo's family, who'd given birth, Would everything be OK? How would it happen? Would it hurt? dragging itself out of the swirling worries came the knowledge that Ichigo wasn't going to leave her, except to hunt for them. She and the little ones would need it, even after the birth...assuming she lived that long. She nibbled her lip a bit before going to wake up Ichigo. She had to survive this pregnancy and raise the kids to adulthood safely, at all costs, a feat no mother she'd ever heard of had succeeded in doing entirely. Ichigo had been solidly asleep when Rukia started nosing him. He stared up at her, sleepy and annoyed at having his sleep disrupted. "Yeah, I'm awake now, what do you want?" Ichigo hated being woken up by others.
It was the subtle smile on Rukia's face that made him wake up further. He'd never seen such a smile on her face before...and it reminded him a bit of his mother, when she'd smiled knowingly at him and Karin and Yuzu. Rukia lay down carefully next to him. While laying down didn't surprise or baffle him, the care with which she made each action did surprise and baffle him. "Hey, what's wrong?" he asked more seriously, cocking his head.
What she told him next made him glad he was laying down. Otherwise, he'd have fallen flat on his back from shock. "You're pregnant? When did this happen? When are you having the kids? Are you going to be all right? Do you need any help?" he babbled, totally poleaxed, flummoxed, and generally incapable of anything more than a shocked expression of concern that sometimes shaded over into a soft smile he'd previously never shown Rukia. They were unaware at that moment of how much of a commotion Ichigo was making over the questions he was asking about Rukia's pregnancy. His thoughts were a swirl of concern for Rukia's health, nervous excitement about having kids (and apprehension about being a bad or overenthusiastic father to his kids), and a growing pride and determination to do everything possible for his impending little family. What was not on his mind was how Rukia's old friend, Renji, would take all of this.

The answer that Ichigo was looking for was "not happy." Not happy at all.
Abarai Renji had known Rukia all his life, and though he would be reluctant to admit it, his care for her not only bordered on love, but had actually invaded and was laying siege on the capital. While he had long suspected Rukia's true feelings for himself were merely as a friend and that her feelings for Ichigo were actual love, he still could not help but love his eldest friend.
Ever since Rukia had escaped and started regathering the pack, Renji had tried to see her every other day to check up on how she was doing. He hadn't been able to find her for a week, and he was starting to get into a panic. What if something had happened to her? True, she could take care of herself, but she had been running herself ragged to reform the Seireitei. In dangerous times like this, she could have, perhaps, found a Hollow, and the last thing h wanted was to find out that she had been injured or, worse, met the final death because she was exhausted from finding the last members of the pack. Especially Ichigo.
Ichigo, huh? Not that there was anything wrong with Ichigo. After Ichigo had defeated him in their first combat, Renji had been willing to become Ichigo's friend, but Ichigo's relationship with Rukia still bothered him. Not that he was willing to admit that to anyone; that would be ridiculous. Rukia liked them both equally, as friends, and her opinion was the one that count--speaking of Ichigo, was that his voice up ahead in a panic?
Without thinking, Renji started into a run in the direction of Kurosaki's loud voice, ready for combat. What he wasn't ready for was to find the clearing in front of a cave that was entirely peaceful except for a panicky Ichigo and a serene Rukia. She's safe. Good. "What are you shouting about?"((Long post is loooooooooong so I can get used to playing him. x.x))

Rukia turned around first and grinned broadly. "I'm pregnant, Renji. They're Ichigo's." She looked up at Ichigo with a touch of excessive and possessive pride. "He's my bondmate, now."
Ichigo turned around as Rukia started speaking, and a blush spread up his cheeks. "Uhhh, yeah, we're expecting kids, now." He was smiling his I'm-worried-but-like-hell-am-I-telling-you-that smile, eyes closed and head carried sheepishly. "Kinda exciting for us, huh?" Unfortunately, Ichigo was not prepared for the mauling Renji was almost certain to deliver upon hearing this. Rukia was only marginally more prepared, but not enough to help, especially as she was now pregnant.

Renji stopped dead in his tracks. Rukia was...was pregnant? And with Ichigo's kids? Renji could feel his heart break, but for once, it wasn't his heart that was in control. Too bad his head, which held the reins, was suddenly heavy with the desire to maul. Without quite realizing what he was doing, the vice-captain of squad 6 was floating through the air and shoving his claws against Ichigo's throat.
There were so many things he could say. I love Rukia, but she loves you. You don't understand what you're doing. But the first thing that leapt out, the strongest, most important thing of all was, "You idiot! She could die! How could you, you FECKING IDIOT?!"

"RENJI, STOP IT! GET OFF ICHIGO!" Rukia shouted, moving forward carefully but determined to make a grab at him. "I'm going to be all right! Ichigo wouldn't do anything that would hurt me!" Memories of the time spent with Ichigo crowded through her mind, and once that was started, tears started coming down her cheeks. "I'm fine with having children with Ichigo. I want them," she said, trying to swallow her tears.
Ichigo had been about ready to shout back and flip Renji off him when Rukia started crying. He lay there, flummoxed, until the anger built up in him that Renji's harsh words had made his bondmate cry. "What the hell, Renji?! You made my bondmate cry! You should know better than to say that kind of stuff, that Rukia could die! She won't die! I won't let her," he added vehemently as he moved to flip Renji off of him, not intending to go any further while Rukia was crying and needed him. As it was, all he could do until Renji was off him was wrap his tail around one of Rukia's paws, for which she smiled through her tears at him, a vulnerable, happy smile.

When Matsumoto Rangiku awoke from her nap she wasn't expecting to have her ears assaulted. They flipped back as she yawned, tilting her head up curiously. "Whats going on?" For a moment she suspected an attack, but then, someone would have woken her up before now. Which could only mean one thing...drama!
The Vice Captain of squad 10 sashayed her way to Ichigo's den and wasn't surprised to see the three of them. What did surprise her was the animosity between them. She caught the tail end of the conversation and gasped, her silver blue eyes widened as she placed a paw over her mouth. "Rukia! Why didn't you tell me you were expecting? We could have had a party!" She pouted. "And you two should be ashamed, making her worry like that. Lighten' up."

Rukia grinned at Matsumoto. "I had that in mind, Vice Captain Matsumoto, but I thought I should tell Ichigo first, as he's the father, and Renji came over first to see what the commotion was." The idea of a party definitely excited her, especially given that Matsumoto was fun to party with, and the birth of children in the Seireitei was cause for major celebration.
"I didn't intend to make her cry, Renji just attacked me out of nowhere!" Ichigo responded irritatedly. While he secretly enjoyed a good tussle with Renji, he did not want to enjoy it in the presence of his bondmate, especially when she was expecting, and that state was what caused the tussle.

Rangiku smiled and came over to the other female's side with a obvious look at her stomach. "How many do you think is there? There can't be very many; your to small!"
She tsked Ichigo and shook her head. "Thats not good enough. Your going to be a father, so you'll have to start thinking. ....Just like I am about this party." Instantly, she was chipper and in a pondering mood. "Now what kind? We can't have a really good one because of her condition, so...."

He had been awake for a time now, wandering the grounds of the pack lands. Captain Hitsugaya's own ears sat straight up as he caught the commotion coming from the den of Rukia. This coming to really no surprise to him, ears now flattening back and eyes narrowing. The young snow haired captain walked unhurried towards the den. A snort coming from his muzzle as he heard his vice captain. Hitsugaya poked his head about the den entrance and in upon what was going one. "What are you all up to now?" He asked not really hearing the conversation, only the racket that was coming from the spot. His tone coming off icy, deep blue eyes watched each of the dragons in the den.
As Hitsugaya looked from one to the other, it was kind of hard not to miss the bulge in Rukia's belly. Though he had heard of pregnancies outside the pack, never had he really though of it happening here. Still, rolling his shoulders back to adjust the sash about his neck, the captain sat waiting his answer. Though a warning glance was given to his vice captain, knowing well of her personality of such things. For those that didn't know him well, they would consider Hitsugaya as a sulky child, or something like that...

Rukia grinned at Vice Captain Matsumoto. "I should think at least three. Ichigo can really get going once he's excited," she added, her grin taking on the feline grin of femmes who are taking about their male's prowess. "As for a party...why don't we put you in charge of planning it?" she suggested mischievously. Turning around, she noticed Captain Hitsugaya had arrived. "We're talking about the fact that I'm expecting Ichigo's children, Captain Hitsugaya," she said more soberly, but still with a soft smile of pride.
Ichigo went straight to a ferocious blush before he stammered, "D-don't say stuff like that, Rukia!" Greeeaaat. This was SO going to keep his image intact. He wasn't sure if Rukia talking about this stuff was better or worse than Kon impersonating him. "We shouldn't be worrying so much about the party; we should be making sure Rukia stays safe and is cared for during her pregnancy, because the last thing I want is for her and the kids to get hurt or something." He was still flushing, but fatherly instinct was starting to take over: that blend of confused and excited and helpless panic that seizes fathers, mostly first-timers, but sometimes even the experienced ones. He then noticed Toushirou had arrived and stopped his panicky flailing and stammering. "Oh, morning, Toushirou."
