Okay, well, I don't know how many people are participating this time around, but Raven and I are both keen to reread and I have a copy with me now, so we'll do it anyway, for lack of other ideas. wink So, discussion thread is open! Readreadread!

The ritual bits at the beginning make me wish I had a kindred, or some IRL Heathens to hang out with sad
Although, wtf Thorsson ritual? THORSSON IS TEH DEBIL.

That's exactly what I was thinking (the first bit). I'll be running a heathen style Yule ritual but I'm the only Heathen in the group. There's one guy that works with the Norse Gods but from a more ecclectic path. I don't know any Heathens near me in RL. I want to hang out with Heathens! As to Thorsson. No one says some of his rituals and such aren't worthwhile. There's just a lot to discard. For example, runic yoga can suck it. However, the hammer blessing actually has precedence in the lore so I'm good with it.

I have no problem with hammer blessings in general. I don't like Thorsson's version, because it's far too ceremonial-influenced for my tastes.
Maybe it was just the version of it I read, but it's freaking long neutral I just hold up my hammer and ask Thor's blessing etc.

I don't actually use a hammer, mostly because I don't have one I like right now. And I don't bother with the ceremonial style stuff either. I do do the symbol of the hammer over the drinking horn though. I know it's in the lore somewhere. I'll have to look it up but there was a bit with a Christian (priest maybe?), getting taunted for making the symbol of the cross over his cup before drinking, and a friendly Heathen defends him, saying he's only making the sign of the hammer, like anyone might. That implyies that such was actually done.
Is is bad that I'm really skimming the history section? I have whole other books devoted to that topic, and I'm really interested in the ritual part of it right now.

I'm doing the same thing xp I keep thinking "GET ON WITH IT WOMAN".
I used to make the sign of the hammer too and it's awesome that there was precedence. But, I found an old hammer on my equivalent of ebay with "THOR" emblazoned on it for one dollar. I mean, I knew a good thing when I saw it xd
(Thor's just the company, but hey.)

I do not remember so much of this book being history. burning_eyes SERIOUSLY WOMAN. GET ON WITH IT. She doesn't go into enough detail for any of it to be interesting, so instead it's just bland bland history overview. GET ON WITH THE BOOK.

Yeah. Of course, I've gained a much more thorough understanding of much of this history since the first time I read this book so that might contribute to the dullness. There are a few tidbits where she mentions specific people or events that I don't know much about but she doesn't give much detail so it mostly makes me want to read something else to find out more.
I believe we move beyond the history lesson around pg 55.

Awww! She left out the best quote involving Heathen opinions towards conversion! She mentions the story of Radbod (pg 38 ) but leaves out the quote assosiated with his refusal of babtism, when he's told his Heathen ancestors won't be in heaven. Well I'll just post it myself.
"I'd rather go to hell with my ancestors that to heaven with a pack of beggars."
Hah!
Hmm. It's a little rude but I like the spirit of it.

So quick question. I keep coming across this idea of the Vanir being sibling consorts. She brings it up several times in the book and I've heard it elsewhere but I can't figure out where this idea comes from. Did I miss something in the sources. Was someone reading too much into things? I don't know. I just don't know where this idea comes from or why it's such a popular one. I've never seen any indications of this relationship myself so it confuses me.

I've never seen any indications of this relationship myself so it confuses me. Freyr and Freyja doesn't make any sense to me - they have consorts anyway. Njord maybe - Loki makes an accusation of him sleeping with his sister, but VAL (I think it was) says "sister" would refer to sister in law as well, or adopted sister or blood sister or whatever. I'm not sure if it's mentioned elsewhere from the Lokasenna. I do know a lot of groups honour Nerthus as Njord's wife-sister, but if he was married already why did he agree to marry Skadhi and try so to make it work?

So...Is anyone besides San and I reading this? Or did anyone read it when we first planned to and want to add something to the discussion? I'd love to see the opinions of someone who's not a Heathen. Get an outside perspective, as it were.
And does anyone have the Book of Blots she keeps mentioning? I've sort of been making things up from what I could skim here and there and it would be interesting to at least check out a more complete look at some full rituals, instead of just overviews.
