i think it's wrong that my little brother is getting a drug for mentaly ill adults, risperidone. he's only five and this pill basically knocks him out. Our prescriber yelled at me for telling him that we wanted a smaller dosage than 2 pills a day. Reply if you think this is wrong.

I don't really know. My seven year old nephew takes the medication and he seems to react normally. But my brother seemed really pissed that he had to take the medication. He thought he could train his son to not be special but he lost that battle. I'm just pretty neutral to it all. Particially why I'm here so I can learn. I don't know that much about medications and what they do.

Yeah I agree with you. It's wrong to make him take medication. Unless he was like Freddie Kruger or something?

Two pills seems like a lot for a 5 year old, regardless of the dosage. Good on you for fighting for him.

Well from what I've read, Risperidone is approved to treat children 5-16 years of age with aggressive or self-injurious behaviors. This includes children on the spectrum. And usually they start the dosages out small, and work up to the appropriate amount. So the fact that he is taking 2 pills seems odd, and also the part that you were yelled at... doesn't sound right either... stare

It can cause drowsiness, which is supposed to go away. Drowsiness being another reason I would think they would start him out on a smaller dose... And whatever you do, don't ever just stop taking this type of medication without consulting a doctor. Most psych meds aren't something you can just quit cold turkey.

As far as medication goes, I feel that the benefits absolutely have to outweigh the risks. Is he hurting himself or others? Are his behaviors sever and impacting the quality of his life? These are all things that need to be considered when choosing to go the route of medication.

I wish the best for you and your brother. And I commend you for looking out for his wellbeing. 3nodding

My son is 2 1/2 and his pediatrician wanted me to put him on that medication. My mom was with me and we both said no. His autism isn't severe, but it's not mild either. BUT, I would rather deal with his tantrums every once in a while, than have him a vegetable at two. He also wanted me to give him 2 pills a day crushed in his juice. Sometimes I think the doctors lose perspective past the prescriptions and forget that they are people just like everyone else. Why should they be "out of it" while we get to live normal lives. I totally agree with you.
