It was a cold day. Which wasn't unusual for their snow bound haven, but Yves felt it in his bones. He was getting old, maybe. He had raised two litters with Sandhya, and his son had raised two litters as well. His pack was growing, swelling. It was a source of pride for him, a source of strength. He was getting old, but there was need to let that slow him down. "Ready?" he asked Arbalète. He smiled, head high. "Give it your best shot, granddaughter. You'll never win if you don't."

It was a cold day, but Arbalète hardly felt it under her heavy fur coat. She was tense, but wasn't letting her nerves get to her. It had been some time since she had last sparred with her grandfather, and she was ready to show him what she had learned. She had gotten better, had adjusted to her full adult growth. She wasn't a child anymore. She hadn't been for some time. "I never hold back," she retorted, and waited. The honor of the first blow would fall to her grandfather, not her.

Yves growled in frustration as his first two blows fell wide of the mark. Had he really grown so rusty? A lesser dragon might have winced from Arbalète's solid blow to the shoulder, but Yves recovered quickly and landed a medium blow. There, another heavy blow from Arbalète (she really wasn't holding back, was she?) followed by a light one from him, a barely glancing blow from Arbalète and here he came, ready to land a solid blow, to show he still had it, that age hadn't defeated him.
The shock from Arbalète's block jolted up his arm.
"Enough," he said, stepping back. He stared at Arbalète for a moment, blood dripping from his shoulder and expression sad. She was an adult now, old enough to have a mate of her own. His granddaughter.
He was growing old.
Without another word, he turned and left.

Tunnel vision. Just focus on the fight. Don't hold back. Arbalète barely felt her grandfather's blows and, there -! Stretching out her arm, she blocked one of his blows, although she felt the impact travel up her arm. She shuddered, but held on.
Enough? Arbalète took a step back, confused. And that's what she saw him, really saw him. Yves, the leader, Yves who she had always looked up, Yves, who was always the strongest.
He looked tired. His shoulder was bleeding from one of her harder hits.
Yves, her grandfather.
Without a word he turned and left, but she remained in the clearing, shaken by the revelation of her grandfather's mortality.
