I mean, Mal used to be a really good soldier, but then again, fighting is Jayne's living.

I say Mal. Jayne is willing to fight dirty, but that's not as efficient as fighting smart. Like when Mal was fighting Early or whatever his name was and the bounty hunter from the move, and some other guys. In a fight of violence (a.k.a. not seduction), I think Mal would win.

no, I don't think he would. Jayne's got the will poor believe me, but he knows Mal would always be there for him. like a brother. they are a family.

I think that Jayne would win. Jayne has superior, brute strength, and his job and basically his life is fighting. Mal can shoot and isn't bad in a fist fight, but sometimes he does win through on luck. Jayne isn't exactly the sharpest pencil in the box, but when it comes to fighting, and to saving himself, he is pretty smart. If it came down to it, I think Jayne could take Mal. Especially if he had Vera wink
But then... I don't think Jayne would ever give Mal a reason to fight him.... not after Ariel.

King_of_ninjas You say this about the guy who sold them out on Ariel? But he didn't see it as selling out Mal. He was only trying to deliver River and Simon. I don't think he thought it through far enough to consider the way it would affect the relationship he has with Mal.

well, as said earlier, jayne wouldnt have any reason to fight mal, he is his employer and why would mal fight jayne, its idiotic, mal is a smart man and would know not to get in this fight b/c it wouldn't have any advantage and jayne would probabbly win

Mal would win. First off, brute size and strength can be as much as a liabilty as an asset in a fight if the person opposing them knows how to use it two his advantage. Jayne can physically pummel someone into paste, but Mal knows how to fight smart.
Secondly, Jayne fights dirty. So does Mal.
Mostly, I think it comes down to will power. If it came down to a fight between them, Mal would win because he would want it more. He's a guy that just doesn't quit, even in the face of icky bleeding stab wounds.
Put another way, Mal was vasty outmatched by the Operative, and yet he still won. Can you imagine the same thing happening with Jayne in Mal's place?

Tough one. I think it could go either way, depending on the circumstances.
Mal is smart. He's much, much smarter than Jayne. He's experienced, and he fights dirty. We know he's got skills. He took down the Operative, and he won that sword fight with what's-his-name.
Jayne is stronger. He's got brute strength and probably more experience than Mal. Mal fought in the war -- Jayne has been fighting constantly for his entire life.

Remeber when Jayne said, "We're supposed to be afraid of this guy because he beat up Mal? That's not too hard to do."
Jayne is a tough guy, but I do agree that Mal would win in a fight, I think because Jayne is a little (subconciously) afraid of Mal. I mean, he's his boos and captain, and has shown that he can be a frightening man.
