Soaring, high above the ground, with the wind whipping through her hair as she flew with her partner. What would that feel like? It was a reasonable question, watching Geminith float above the ground, wobbling a bit on wings not used to supporting herself completely. It had been over 6 months since Jada had come to Ghenza, and it was soon to be her seventeenth birthing day. Ghenza was a drastic change from her life in Telgar, or at the Hall. By now the excitement should be overwhelming her, wondering what gifts she would be sent from her parents and friends. She'd have something she could share and show off to her friends, to tell them all how loved she was, and it would be a day for her to spoil herself a bit.
Instead she'd be stuck here in this nosophobic hole of a Weyr that limited its contact with everyone. The High Reaches riders had been allowed to leave- Geminith had cried a fond farewell to Sharath as the other gold left- and she'd gotten her diary and a short letter out to M'dor, asking him to get Tethis take care of her flits, but... who knew if she would be able to hear anything back, or when?
You are thinking too hard, Jadamirei. Geminith landed next to her, bending her head to ruffle the dark hair. The gold was still small, compared to what she would probably be when she was older. Her mind-touch was warm, affection pressing against her rider's mind like the flutter of an insects wings. You will see everyone again, for one day we will be able to fly to them together; and you will not miss them in the meantime. She was instructing her bonded patiently. No, we have too much to learn to miss them right now. We will remember your friends every day. You have told me of them, and we have made some friends here as well! Remember that!
Water trickled over Jada's bare feet as she splashed them in the water. "I remember." She couldn't be angry at Geminith for having changed her life, even if she wanted to. She'd never realized what she missed until Gemi came and brought-
Color. Geminith finished the thought, eyes contently whirling as she pushed into the water herself and rolled in it, feeling the gravel bottom scratch over her hide. Wash my belly, Jada, I feel like I haven't been oiled in an hour.
"Spoiled, that's what you are."
