River stared in the black starry space, her eyes intent on the darkness. She smiled without pulling her eyes away. "Do not worry, Malcom Reynolds. Your 'Serenity' will be safe."

River looked down to the controls, humming as they flew through space. She flipped some switches randomly, like a child playing with controls for a car, but the ship stayed steady. Her hand went to one switch, but froze over it. She stared down, her face suddenly solemn and blank. She couldn't pretend anymore. Pretend like it wasn't there. The feeling. Pretend like they weren't still there.
"Why did they have to die," she whispered.

Letting her finger reach the control, she glided her hand across the shiny surface. Her eyes were unfocused even as her mind drifted. "We shouldn't be good people. It's no use, it doesn't make things any better."

Her voice grew tense as she continue to speak, her throat strained as she tried to hold back the tears. Her hands gestured matter-of-factly as she spoke. "After all, he was our pilot and he was a shepherd. I mean a shepherd," she said, as though debating statistics, "And it did him no good at all. God loved him, so why did he kill him then? Because it doesn't matter," she cried, pulling her knees to her chest as a tear pulled from her glistening eyes. "It doesn't matter at all."

river, He died in his believe, because he had faith. there are times when thats all we can have.

River brushed away the tear with the back of her flowy sleeve. Her feet returned slowly to the floor as she leaned forward, staring into the night sky. Her dark hair trailed over her face as she winced in sorrow. "But they're gone," she said, then repeated it mournfully.
She looked down suddenly, powerful emotions siezing her young form. "They're gone and they'll never come back!" she screamed, gripping her hair in frustration. "You all miss them, I know you do, but you won't say it. You lie to yourselves!" She stood suddenly and turned to Mal as she yelled, angry that they had betrayed their friends. They tried so hard to push them from their minds. They tried to make them disappear, make their memories as vanishing as their persons. And it hurt. All the anguish they pushed away, she felt, and she didn't know what to do about it. She threw herself toward Mal, crumbling to the floor near his feet. "They're gone..." she sobbed softly, her hand clinging to the a metal support of his seat.

Zoe steps into the cockpit/bridge with her strong boots landing heavly on the metal floor. "Are peices falling off of our ship, Sir?" she asks Mal, addressing him the same as she always does. Her black hair is loosly tied behind her head, and her gun's in its holster. "Because we just fixted her up, Sir."

River looked up to Zoe when she spoke. The young girl rose to her feet and crept up to the woman, as though not to disturb the captain. "Shh," she said, and took Zoe by the arm, leading her away from the cockpit. When they were hearing distance away, she stopped wiped her eyes clean. She looked to Zoe with explanation. "We don't want him to think that. Cause its his serenity, you know? Besides, it will be all right," she nodded, trying to hold back the tears.

Zoe looked from River to Mal. Her time spent under his command easily took over. "Were are we landing, Sir? Anything special I should tell Kaylee because I don't reckon this is much of a place to land, Sir." She looked at River and gave her a small smile. In a hushed voice ment for only River's ears, she said, "Of course it'll be all right... Captn' wouldn't risk his Ship, now would he?"
