Thought I'd create a little place for us to talk about our favorite romance novels and authors.
Personally I tend to be rather picky when it comes to "romance" novels, and I really prefer it when there is a decent plot and well written characters, over some books that clearly are nothing more than an outline strung up around endless "sex scenes".
I'm a big Nora Roberts fan, I think I probably own most of her books (except the Eve Dallas ones - in general I'm not a big fan of books set in the future) though I'm getting better about using the library, since I'm running out of shelf space. xd

I actually don't like romance as the central plot in my stories. I prefer stories with romance as a sub-plot, as a facet of character development but not as the main driving force for the story.
And what's wrong with an outline strung up around sex-scenes? Sex is awesome. Really, I'd take plotless porn over fluffy-mushy romance any day.

I'm rather picky about romance novels too.
I like to have well developed characters who change throughout the story and a plot that is more then "Hey you're incredibly attractive! I must be in love! Lets have sex and not worry that we have absolutely nothing in common!"
I also love when there's a lot of humor. When an author makes fun of themselves it's great, it's even better when they poke fun at their characters.
I love Christine Feehan, especially her Carpathian series, and I'm a big fan of Katie MacAlister* and Sherrilyn Kenyon*.
*I notoriously spell authors names wrong when I don't have one of their books infront of me.

I prefer stories with romance as a sub-plot, as a facet of character development but not as the main driving force for the story. This is probably where I am with most books as well, I mean it's all fine and good if the main characters fall in love, but I'd rather have a good story wrapped around it all. Quote: And what's wrong with an outline strung up around sex-scenes? Sex is awesome. Really, I'd take plotless porn over fluffy-mushy romance any day. If it's well written - there's nothing wrong with it (which is more where I was trying to go with my statement). Admittedly I haven't read any of her books in a long time, and truthfully I'm not entirely sure I actually made it all the way through the first one I picked up - but Cassie Edwards comes to mind. All her books are titled "Savage... something or other" and it was literally a few sentences of poorly written dialogue between one dimensional characters, and the rest was "thrusting" and "grasping", etc... It was really horrible.

As a general rule, I try to stay away from books that have the words "savage", "hunger" or "desire" in the titles (yes, even when I am jonesing for pronz). I've found that nine out of ten times a book with one of those in the title is poorly written. Also, titles like "Woman's Name and the Thing from Some Place" are pretty shitty as for as both writing and sex go. I know you really shouldn't judge a book by its title alone, but as one whom has read a great deal of porn I can honestly say that the type of title the author chooses to give it is an indicator of the caliber of writing its gonna be.

I WANT TO FIND MY VAMPIRE BONDAGE PORN AGAIN evil Srsly, it'll bug me forever until I can track it down.
I've read one of the Carpathian ones. It was pretty decent crap, in that I'd happily read another of the same series if I were on a plane or on holiday or something. But the one I read - Dark Magic or something? - was a bit distressing in a way because I felt like ALL they did was have sex. Now, I'm as much a fan of hungry hungry animal sex as the next person, but it was like every time they were alone they immediately went at it like rabbits. Show occasional restraint, people! You can have a life together outside of ******** I quite like Anais Nin, who was totally dirty. I want to collect all of the "Harper Perennial Forbidden Classics" series... I have "Justine" by de Sade but haven't read it yet. "Autobiography of a Flea" looks interesting. I have a Poppy Z. Brite sitting in my bookcase waiting to be read as well.

Thank your gods I wasn't the first one to say it! biggrin wink
The first porn I was ever exposed to was fanfiction porn and it kind of set my standard for what porn was supposed to be. Then I graduated middle school adn read some real porn and was so severely disappointed! gonk Its actually kind of jarring to see just how much better fan written porn is to professionally published porn.

My theory is, they don't have to worry about censors. ninja They just write it for their own pleasure. And there's some really ovary-essploding stuff out there, I tell ya.

The Carpatian series in general has a lot of that happening throughout it. Sex doesn't happen for a while in Dark Gold, but neither character stops thinking about it until it happens. And those men are persistent. Course I can't say that I wouldn't be if it had been several hundred years since I had been able to think about sex and now I've got someone who is obviously attracted to me, but keeps saying no.

I know I was reading too much into it but it was sort of, you have these guys, they're immortal. Are they gonna stay in that room until the end of time, ********? xd For some reason I found it vaguely creepy. As if they'd be compelled to ******** against their will for eternity. There's something to be said for the odd conversation! and, y'know, fresh air. The series reminds me a bit of that Nightworld series, only amped up for adults. (Ostensibly. I mean it's not like they have a big R18 on them or anything.)

While Gregori would love to spend the rest of eternity keeping his lifemate in his bed he has to go out and kill the guys who decided not to wait on theirs. And then there's all that time spent healing xd Oh and he has to constantly tell Michail that he and Raven are doiong too many dangerous things. And he's also the primary healer for the entire species. I never really read Nightworld. I think I read one maybe 2 before I couldn't find anymore. Rural libraries have very small selections sweatdrop

Well, I'm not big into romance and I am picky with books. I try to avoid romance novels and just read something with a lot of action in it. If the book is just full of non-sense like ''Omg, I love you so much, I wanna have kids with you and blah blah blah''... I don't like that! I love books with action+romance. Imagine: you are fighting with a pack of your enemies, and manage to fall in love in the mist of it all. That's what love I like. And you might say that it doesn't make sense. Well, love at first sight happens in books always. Some rare times it happens after years of love, but then the book is entirely full of ''falling in love'' bullshit, that I think is just to boring...

I think the romance implied here is less "omg I love you so much" and more "wow, look at the size of that c**k, I bet he ******** like a wild animal". With, y'know, plot. Such as it is.
