So it has been WAY too quiet here on the main forum for too long... sad I feel like a failure of a vice captin. So here is a thread.

On my vacation, I visited one friend who had a couple of kids. One was an infant, the other was... I think 2 or 3. The 2 year old, nick named Phi, seemed very interested in me. Which was really annoying... especially when kitties were sitting on my lap.

Anyway, the way I handled her was I was civil. If she wanted my attention, I acknowledged her. I did not really give her any encouragment. To be around me... confused now I am an Uncle Reiji... xp no real name for you guys. Most of the time my generic lack of interest would make her bored and she would leave me alone... which was good because she had that kids smell... it is kind of like bad kitty smell... only it does not go away and it sticks to you.

Anyway, how do you guys handle kids when you are forced to deal with them?

Small children are actually pretty simple. They like to help, and if you distract them, they stay out of your hair and don't make a fuss. So say "could you go and be a big help and....?" or "would you do something important for me and...?" and get them to go get you a beer or something. The trick is finding them something good enough to occupy their time for a while.

This won't work with kids who really suck, obviously, but in my experience they'e happy so long as they're busy. They're best busy when they're helping, because they feel included, and the best part is they'll do your chores for you.

And I've found that toddlers doing their best to ruin your night by crying all through dinner tend to shut up almost instantly when you run your finger around your wine glass. Just for future reference.

As for the smell, "would you like to smell like a grown up? here, you can have a squirt of my perfume/cologne/body spray".

I take blank paper and crayons to family reunions so they have something to do while I work on chainmaille other than "steal the jump-ring/bead/pliers" From cousin Azer/Nevar/whoever..lol

Though they see me so rarely they don't get my name right.

@Sanguina: Hmmm this is good advice to have. I generally do not have to deal with kids very often. However, given the rate at which my relatives are getting married I would not be surprised if that changes.

crying at the time I did not have anything like cologne with me as I was on a road trip.

Blank paper and crayons is a particularly good idea. Just tell them to draw you something specific and leave them to it. They often take it quite seriously.

Ugh! gonk A couple weeks back some relatives seriously tried to stick me babysitting a baby for 45 minutes due to their poor planning. Fortunately, I got away with only maybe 10 or 15 minutes. I just kind of kept my distance and tried not to provoke it. Not pleasant.

That is always the challenge... not provoking an incident.

I just recently had to deal with my older sister's son. I wanted to start and argument with me I guess. He continued to try to goad me into it but I just ignored him and he eventually sat there quietly until his mother came to get him. After he left my brother thanked me for not engaging him because he was annoying him too.

I'll show them how to play a GameBoy and when they get hypnotized by Mario I get peace and quiet.
Works every time.
