His groanspring had, more or less, exploded over the past couple of days. Apparently Scarentine's Day was a special time that two people spent together, and the student council was hosting a dance for it? Something like that -- Merope was still unsure what it was, and a search online with Moogle left him with even more questions then answers.
But, he supposed that he might as well give it a shot. Merope waited outside of Yui's class dressed in his etiquette class clothing: a white poet's shirt, black vest with matching black pants, and a red sash. He decided to drop the eye patch, instead accessorizing with a mysterious covered object he clutched protectively between his hands. The bell rang, and Merope straightened up as students began to leave, his tail swishing nervously as he waited for Yui.

Yui carefully gathered her notes and tucked them carefully into her bookbag. She even went so far as to push her seat back under the desk. After all, good manners didn't cost her anything. Then, satisfied that all was well, she left the classroom. Now that she had a bit of time between classes, she had every intentin of hunting a certain leviathan down and asking him to the Scarentine's Dance coming up.
As far as the young samebito was concerned, gender conventions could go take a flying leap. She would be most unhappy if some other ghoul got to him first. And then, she wriggled through the door and caught sight of Merope standing in the hall. Brightening considerably, she edged her way over to him.

Merope grinned, his bioluminescene glowing a bit brighter upon catching sight of the fair Samebito. "Ah! Yui!" He called, flaring out his fins to catch her attention. Or at least, that was his plan until his fin-like wings bumped into someone. "Sorry! Sorry!" He said quickly, folding his wings in and waiting for Yui to approach him.
Oh geeze. Great. What was he supposed to do now? "Uh, so how are you?" He began awkwardly. Immediately he wanted to slap himself on the forehead for starting it off like that. Stupid, stupid, stupid!

The flaring fins certainly caught her attention as they struck one of the other students. Wincing slightly in sympathy (after all, she'd managed to smack a fair number of folk with her tail by accident), she hurried the last few steps, smiling. And thn really looked at what Merope was wearing and froze.
It wasn't that she considered herself a snob when it came to clothing. But she wasn't exactly sure when the Gentlemen Pirate look had ever been in fashion. With anyone. But Yui was a gentle soul and wouldn't hurt Merope's feelings for anything. Especially not when doing so might leave her dateless.
Instead, she turned up the brightness of her smile a notch and sedately took the last few steps that would put her standing right beside the boil.
"I am well, thank you," she replied politely. "You were waiting for me?"

The Gentleman Pirate look was currently in fashion as far as Merope was concerned. Why else would there be a huge abundance of that particular style in the Lost & Found box, free for the taking? Nevermind that it probably belonged to an ex-pirate student that gave up the ways of the high seas and rum for the way or the ninja. Or robot. Or zombie. Or something else entirely. "Y-Yeah," he stuttered, nervous. The undead boil took a deep breath, steadying his nerves before shifting whatever he was holding to one hand, using his free to remove the cloth that covered it. In the human world, boys gave flowers to girls. In Halloweentown, some boils did that too. Merope, on the other hand? His bouquet that he offered to Yui was made up of coral and some colorful sea life. All in a portable, set-it-and-forget fishbowl without the fish. "Will you go to the Scarentine Dance with me?"

For one brief moment, as Merope offered the bouquet bowl to her, Yui considered melting from cuteness. Smiling happily and carefully taking the bowl to examine further, Yui waited a moment until she could be sure her voice wouldn't do some silly octave jump.
"It is beautiful, thank you. And I would be happy to."
Now she allowed herself to grin impishly at the boil. Might as well tell him the truth.
"I am very happy you asked me. I was coming to find you to ask you the same thing."
She knew instinctively that somehow, her parents knew she was being forward. THey were probably screaming for a fainting couch and not sure why they wanted one. The thought made Yui's grin even wider and more shark-like.

It was beautiful. She liked it. SHE LIKED IT! Merope wanted to grab her and twirl her around in his glee. The Moogle search had suggested giving that special someone flowers, but in all honesty he didn't know where to get any aside from the lawn. Weren't things that grew on the lawn weeds? He wasn't too sure, and went with what he knew: coral. The best place to get it? A minipet shop. His gamble paid off!
The boil returned her shark-grin with his own. "Great minds think alike, yes? But if it makes you feel better..." He took a step forward and carefully embraced her, mindful of the coral-bowl. "I'd love to go with you."
The boil took a step back, his fins drooping slightly. "Ah, Yui?" He began, lowering his voice, "I don't know where to go on from here. I asked you out but the dance won't be for awhile so we can't exactly go to it right now..."

"They do indeed," Yui began and then froze again as Merope embraced her. With her darkly iridescent skin, it was usually difficult to tell when she was blushing. This time, however, the blush was apparently strong enough to cause a ripple of purple-ish pink to flash across her cheeks.
Carefully glancing around to make sure that no teachers were likely to come over and ruin the moment, Yui allowed herself to lean into the embrace, tail twitching happily. And then Merope stepped back and Yui was hard put to not pout. Keeping her voice equally low, as she herself wasn't entirely sure of what to do now, she murmured back, "I believe it is customary to hang out at random times. Every film I have seen seems to think that going out for food and movies is the rule. But... we can make our own rules, yes?"
She racked her brains for a moment, trying to think of something they could do that wouldn't get them in trouble.

Merope was too busy preoccupying himself with how nice Yui's hair smelled to notice her blush. It was customary to hug, right? He hoped so. He even made sure to wear clothes that covered up his exposed flesh as to not disgust her by accidentally touching her with them, or anything along that vein that crossed the thin line between "acceptable" and "DO NOT WANT" when it came to the undead.
"Random?" He echoed, flexing his ear-fins in thought. "That won't do. Maybe... we can meet later at 3:30 or 4 o'clock at the Haunted Hill and then we can go to the Maul for a bite to eat? To start?" Merope volunteered, "I mean, as long as we aren't out past curfew whenever that is and are back on campus in time, we can do something else too? I've got the whole night!" Not needing to sleep had its advantages. Except -- barnacles! "Unless you want to do something different or meet elsewhere or something," he added hurriedly.

Quickly reviewing her class schedule in her head, Yui gave a nod and smiled.
"I can easily meet you at 3:30. And the Maul is perfectly fine with me," she added with a cheerful tone to allay any worry Merope might be feeling. In all honesty, she hadnt' really explored the Maul much since enrolling in Amityville and she was eager to have a chance to look around. And since her last class let out around 2:30, she would have time to run back to her room, get cleaned up and perhaps change into other clothes.
Yes, it was a good plan overall.
Carefully holding the beautiful gift she'd been given, Yui decided to be daring and stood on Tiptoe to gently kiss Merope's cheek. Then, blushing even more furiously, she smiled and tried to silently order her tail to stop twitching so much. THe last thing she wanted was to knock another student head over tail.
"I have to get to my next class, but perhaps you can walk with me?"

She kissed him.
She kissed him.
She kissed him.
She kissed him.
Merope stared in euphoric stupor at Yui, a dark flush crossing his cheeks while his bioluminecent markings began to glow brightly. She kissed him! "!!" He said as his fins flared out, then folded, then twitched as he could barely restrain himself. "!!!" ... "!!!!!"
Something clicked on the boil's head, and he found his voice again. "I'dlovetowalkwithyou," he gushed, his fins immediately folding flat in embarrassment. "I mean, ah, yes I'd like to walkwithyooou. Walk with you, yes."
"Er, may I carry your bag for you?" He asked, offering his arm. Wait. Was he supposed to offer his arm? Or was he supposed to take her hand and hold it? Ah, the internet has failed him!

If the internet had failed Merope, it had more than justified Yui's faith in the Moogle search results. Thought he articles she'd read had implied that kissing him would result in him kissing her back. Though, when she really thought about it, she much preferred the reaction she did get. It was so cute! Besides, this reaction was much more like Merope than further kissing would have been so soon after asking her to the dance.
So, with a demure smile upon her face, she handed over her bookbag, though she kept a firm and protective grip on her bouquet bowl. NO ONE was touching that and risking ruination. And for all her gentleness and good manners, Yui would, ah what was the phrase...? Ah yes. Choke a b***h if they laid a hand on Merope's present to her.
"Of course. I would be honored if you did, Merope. Though I think if you make any purchases at the Maul tonight, fairness decrees that I should carry it for you, yes?"

He carefully folded his wings tightly against his back before slinging her bookbag over his shoulder on the side opposite of Yui. He didn't offer to take the bouquet from her -- all in all, he was immensely pleased with how receptive she was of the gift. Though, should he offer to carry it for her? Her look told him otherwise, so instead he reached around her, hesitated, then put his arm around her waist anyway as they began to walk towards Yui's next class.
This was okay, right? "Well," he began, thinking. "Then in fairness this means I get to carry your things too, right? That way everything works out, though I honestly wouldn't mind carrying everything, really."

His arm was around her waist! Had it been possible (as it was for some of the student body), she might have melted from happy on the spot. As it was though, her tail simply began to very gently wag. As they walked, she heard one or two not so muffled curses as her happy!tail in all likelihood kneecapped a few students. But none of that mattered because Merope had his arm around her waist and they were walking together.
In the midst of her fit of bliss, she vaguely heard him speaking and carefully considered his words.
"Yes," she agreed with a soft laugh, "I suppose it does. It is best when everything balances out correctly."
She took another moment to carefully weight he pros and cons or Merope carrying everything before giving her head a firm shake.
"No, that won't do. If you carry everything, you might get tired or sore. And that is not fair to you. You will just have to let me carry things too."
