So yesterday was Ash Wednesday, and I'm wondering if any of you are doing Lent and if so, what you're giving up!
I'm giving up all sweets. Chocolate, candy, donuts, cookies, etc.
This should be fun.. one day down, 39 to go.

Similar to mine, except I'm giving up most carbs. That means no pasta, no bread or anything like that. Exceptions are burritos and fish on Fridays and blackstrap molasses in my peanut butter.

I don't give things up, instead I do extra things. 3nodding This year I'm writing inspirational journal entries here and on facebook to help others find God in their daily lives through my encounters with Him. mrgreen (PS: You can read my first entry from Ash Wednesday, yesterday, night. 3nodding And keep tabs on me all throughout Lent, even Sundays! biggrin )

I'm doing a little of both. I'm limiting my computer usage to one hour a day for all non-religious or non-art related studies. And I'm trying to spend much more time in prayer. biggrin

More prayer. More service. More time with family. No gossip. No soda. Saying grace before meals (something I'm not used to doing). No cursing.

cursing....it's proven to be harder than I thought, which probably means it needs to stop and it's an area of my life I really need to fix.

I'm giving up meat. 1.) because avoiding meat for 40 days is a bit of a pain in the butt so it makes for a really good sacrifice, I think. 2.) because the meat at my school is undercooked most of the time, or it is deep fried, so passing on meat and eating more veggies fruits and nuts is way better for my body.

I have been a bit curious, why did everyone give up the item or task that they did, I know the Biblical reason why we do it. But I if folks are willing to share would like to know why they gave up what they did?

I'm giving up the carbs and sweet stuff (with certain exceptions like when there's nothing else on Fridays and when I do something stupid like add too much vanilla and almond to my yoghurt) because they are addicting. It's also for some health reasons and figured Lent is as good a time to start as any.

Dividing Solid I have been a bit curious, why did everyone give up the item or task that they did, I know the Biblical reason why we do it. But I if folks are willing to share would like to know why they gave up what they did? For me, using my laptop had been a huge part of my day, almost an addiction. Due to a chronic illness, I don't get to see any of my friends from college, and my hometown friends are all away at school. I've become a virtual shut-in, so it's my only real access to the outside world. I thought it would be unhealthy (mentally/emotionally) to eliminate it completely, so I decided to limit my usage. I want to learn to spend that extra time doing more constructive things. I thought replacing it with more prayer would be the most fruitful activity; it helps me along my spiritual journey and prepares me for my future as a nun. Now I aim for only an hour of personal usage, not counting art and religious studies.

I decided to write a journal entry a day to help others find God in their lives because I felt it also might help me to find God in my own life through ways I would never have seen God before. So far it's working for me! biggrin (Now if only my Bible hadn't disappeared. confused sweatdrop )

I'm a huge fan of seafood, so it helps a lot, heh. I hate salad, with a passion, so I've been eating lots of fruit, PB&J sandwiches, eggs, ect.
