Gyarados initially is blue, but there was the red Gyarados that was special.

I'm aware... Black Charizard is also favoured amongst collector's, and comes from shiny Charmander...

yep it would be around that time. I started playing at like 8 or 9, when my brothers started to play. Then we graduated to Yu-Gi-Oh...That was a cool trend until they started making new sets every week or so and outlawing original cards. Then I stopped playing much of those games.
