Today I got into a musical debate. Here's what went down:
Quote:
"Anonymous: -i dont get deadmaus
Me: -Why not?
Anonymous:-i looked it up, and i like ome techno, but thats not music.
thats a repetitive beat with random soouds mixed in.
its not right, yet so many love it, just like that wierd hetalia thing.
Me: -Well I consider it music to be honest. It's a relatively new genre and like most new genres of music, it isn't always widely accepted at first. When I think about some of the "traditional" songs I've performed as a vocalist and a clarinetist, in theory they're also a repetitive beat with random sounds mixed in. But... To each his or her own, I guess.
Anonymous:-well the definition of music constitutes that a melody exists.
none there.
im pretty sure deadmaus should have its own genre.
i play piano and love the older songs (after 1965) and not that stuff you hear on the radio today. (i mean really, how did lady gaga and katy parry get famous at all?)
thats just my view on music.
Me: -Like you, I do enjoy older songs rather than most modern music. But deadmau5 is already part of a well established genre (along with multiple subgenres) called EDM (Electronic Dance Music)and proving to revolutionize Progressive House music. As for the supposed lack of existence of a melody, I politely disagree. The definition of music includes "the tones or sounds employed, occurring in single line (melody) or multiple lines (harmony)" And when I listen to his music, I am able to take apart the multiple lines of tones and sounds he uses. For example, I was listening to Right This Second today. There are two coexisting lines of beats working together to make a rhythm. The melody of his songs is repetitive, yes; but not nonexistent. I think that this is not only refreshing but revolutionary for music itself.
On a somewhat irrelevant note, I want to revisit a point you stated previously, identifying music that is "a repetitive beat with random sounds mixed in" (I do believe that's the statement). Which would be more associated with the genre called dubstep. Dubstep is definitely something I'm still thinking about, pondering if it is music or not. But I digress.
I guess my point is, music is an art form. And like any art form, it can be redefined at any time. Electronic artists (to name two of my favorite trailblazers in the genre, Deadmau5 and Daft Punk) are bringing change in the world of music. Just like in the art form of art and drawing, they are incorporating technology into their work. And just like people who favor traditional media in art versus digital art, there are still people who will not accept EDM as music. But if there's one thing I've learned from musical debates, music taste is subjective; if people didn't disagree on musical taste, an ancient worldwide dollar industry would have a null, useless existence."

No response yet from the other person. Did I handle this correctly? Any other talking points I forgot? Have any of you ever encountered a similar situation? Discuss please.
