I went to Miejers for some food earlier tonight and decided to look at their Betta selection. I was more furious than ever! Usually I'd complain to them because I'd see so much crap in their bowls that they can't swim without inhaling it, but tonight it was way worse. Tonight a third of their bowls had algae in them due to not being changed in a while! The poor guys!

I picked up the little blue veil-tail that was in the worst cup and personally made a complaint to the store manager on the clock. All he said to me was that he'll have someone take care of it in the morning, and that the employes should've made sure it was taken care of! What?! The employees should've made sure after all the complaints I have made in-store and with corporate and nothing has been done since to make sure it's taken care of?!

After I get out of work tomorrow night I'm going back to see if anything has been done. I'm also going to take my camera to take pictures and video. I also sent a complaint through corporate tonight expressing my disgust.

I'm so mad, I have half a notion to not only take pictures and videos to post around the web, but to make stickers to post on their cups stating, "Warning! This store doesn't care if they sell me to you sick, make your fish at home sick, have me die on this shelf sick or after you buy me due to being sick. They just want your money"

A picture I took tonight of the poor little blue veil-tail I showed to the manager. You can't even see him due to the filth. I wish I could've took him home because due to the situation he probably won't survive. If they agree to give him to me in the next few days, I will take him, but once he gets better, I'll have to find him a home. IDK if I should though.

That's DISPICABLE! I would boycott if there were Meijers in my area.

Maybe you could start a petition or a website?

And I thought the WalMarts around were bad! gonk Sharpie notes on to the cups (not the lids, the cups) so that the water has to get changed if they dont want people seeing the notes on the cups. The fish get their water changed, costomers get to see nasty notes on the cups so they dont support them, and the store actually has to take responsibility for its live animals.

That's a great idea. It would be much more effective than stickers, but it would be less practical. It would be kinda hard not to get caught.

Really? You're lucky to see a living WalMart empolyee more then 2 feet from the cash registers here. On accation you'll see one roaming around the store, but its the end of the freeking world if theres one in the fish section rofl

lol, I shop at Target mostly, and it seems like there are employees EVERYWHERE. ( I briefly considered doing something similar when they were carrying AquaBabies.)

If you don't know what AquaBabies are, here's a protest site. It's not for the faint-hearted. Robyn's AquaBabies Boycott Page

I had never heard of AquaBabies but that entire thing is horrid. People and their desire to profit at the cost of animal's well-being never ceases to surprise me. mad Never.

I know this is an older thread but I didn't realize I hadn't replied with an update. After talking to the manager that night, I went back the next night as soon as I got out of work. Kim was mad for me dragging her along, but I was to furious to be reckoned with. When i checked on the Betta fish, the only ones they changed the water for was the worst ones I left by the sink. Even then, all they did was dump the water out and replace it. they didn't even take the time to replace their cups with clean ones or wipe the algae from the container. After this, they shoved these guys in the back of the rack.

I pulled them all to the front and rotated the other nasty cups to the front as well.
After I got home I sent another formal compliant through their headquarters. they have yet to reply back. Since that time, I am boycotting them personally. The Miejers on the north-side of town isn't the best, but at least they do a bit of a better job than our South-side Miejers that I've been having problems with.

I've since bought a camera and when I have time in the future I plan on going to each one of their stores in the area and creating a few short films to post online and spreed more awareness.

What makes this even more sad is the fact that most people EXPECT this. The betta's at my job get feed every day and a water change twice a week (those cups are small) and ANY time a costumer sees us feeding or cleaning them they seem surprised. More then once they have even commented on it, thankfully in a good way, but its still sad that that's the expectations people have even at pet stores.
