First off, I will say that I can see some problems with this already, but I thought I should voice it here before discarding it uninlaterally. Thus I decided to ask here before dumping this into TT for general comment. For all intents and purposes, this is alpha.

So, we have a limited amount of 'sticky space' at the top of each forum for important information, essential rules, security announcements, Information Resources (Well, once it gets rewritten.), etc. However I know we have, or had, many good guides, tutorials, and FYI topics, which tend to get buried deep in the forum due to not really needing to be posted in. Would it be possible to get a 'locked' subforum just for Guides and Tutorials, so that guides that pass some form of quality control can be put there for easy access and reference?

Do any of you think this is/is not necessary, or would be a good thing? Also, does anyone have any suggestions for improvements to the concept?

Possible problems I can already forsee: Complicates forum structure further. How would we insure a high standard for quality? How do we handle challenges to the accuracy of a guide? How much free expression is allowed in the guides? (i.e. Do we want these to have a Wikipedia-esque neutrality tone, or are authors allowed to express personal likes/dislikes/opinions in the guides?), how do we handle obsolecence and updating of guides? And does this add too much workload for our mods?

Well, we have a guides sticky which links to already produced guides. However, this is a rather.. more subtle way of having them.

The problem i see, is that we can't really have a "locked" subforum. How would the guides be updated/edited? How would readers provide feedback? Now, an open subforum would provide ample room for this, plus light disucssion. However, it just ahs to be kept clean of anything not related to guides.

Well, not too much. It's basically a subforum dedicated to guides that are technology related.

We could host guides on Car stereo setup, or Hardware modding, or Car engine tuning, or pretty much anything technology/computer related. Hell, even Xbox/ps2 mods..

A "nifty s**t" guide would even fit in.

The structure is so open, it's not going to add a lot of complications.

The same way we do now. Requiring all guides be spell/grammar checked, applying the BS rule.

Once again, strict application of the BS rule. If a guide has blatantly obvious bullshit in it, then the poster is notified, and it must be changed. If it is not, the guide is scrapped, and the user warned.

Well, I would assume that's up to the authors disrection. Take a look at www.gamefaqs.com.. Every guide there falls under the authors taste. Basically, as long as a guide is accurate, then why shouldn't the authors have free choice over how they write?

Well, many guides won't need a severe updating curve.. For time-intensive stuff, that gets fundamentally altered over time, then if it reaches the point of obsolecence, the guide is updated, or killed. smile

I wouldn't think so. C&T is quite well staffed. Besides, it would be easy. Anything not guide-related doesn't belong there, and gets scrapped. smile Tada.

I had an opinion... But Twistex covered it. 0o

Hmm, is it possible to 'lock' a forum so that it is possible to post in/edit threads in it, but not create new ones? The idea behind the 'lock' was to prevent the sort of thread duplication Q&A Guides forum has. Locking would also insure a guide would have to meet some minimum standards of completion before it could be moved into the guides area.
