Life could be so unpredictable at times. Everything had been perfect and then poof it had changed. Even the whispers of the rocks and trees could not have prepared Yakut and the others for what had happened. It had been unfortunate that was certain and while it had been something some had seen coming, others hoped it wouldn't come to such an end. But it had and there was nothing they could do about it. Even if they had known, life had a funny way of pushing things forward, no matter how hard one tried to stop them from happening. So was the way of life. But now was not the time to think on such things, there was work to do, so much work and thinking on the past would only distract from what needed to get done. Though in a way what was rolling about in her mind did have something to do with the task at hand. Life had called her away, begged her to come to this specific area. Why? Well she didn't know yet, the answer would come when it wished to reveal itself. Such was the way of life and all things connected to it.
Earlier this morning she had felt an odd pull, a sensation that forced her to spread those wings and soar upon the wind. These things happened often enough that Yakut did not alert anyone to her departure. Oh her sister would probably come looking for her, she always did, but not because she needed to be protected, no it was because she wanted to know what Yakut was finding out. Could it be a good omen? A bad one? Or another riddle that left them considering just what it meant? Only time would tell, as it always did.
Tipping her wings Yakut gently glided down until her hooves touched soil. Yes, this was the spot. Giving her wings a quick stretch before folding them at her sides Yakut began inspecting the ground. It had to be around here somewhere, it wouldn't have called her all the way out here only to disappear before she arrived. "Speak and I will listen." She said softly as she walked slowly, head held low to the ground.

Once again Yakut had disappeared before the sun had fully rose in the morning. This was becoming an increasing trend for her sister and while Penthesilea knew that Yakut could handle herself it did worry her from time to time. What with the sudden changes that had happened to them only a few months past it was hard not to think of the worst sometimes. They had been the lucky ones that day, as had several others, but those others were now scattered to the winds like leaves in the fall. They did not know if they would ever find them again, but there was no reason to give up hope just yet. With time they would know the answers. Speaking of answers, it was likely that Yakut was searching for them yet again. Some would call her sister crazy for talking to objects such as rocks and saying they could talk back. However Penthesilea would never say such things. Besides with the number of times Yakut had forewarned them about something that the rocks and trees had told her about and then those things coming true, Penthesilea was hard pressed to think her sister crazy at all.
If anyone was crazy it were those who did not believe her sister. One day they would see the Yakut was right of mind. That was something they could prove another time, right now she wished to track down her sister and see what was going on. There could be signs of the others or even simple clues. With a flap of her wings the mare took off, picking her direction on a whim and hoping it would lead her to Yakut.
It took a while but eventually Penthesilea caught a glimpse of her sister in a small clearing. My she had traveled quite far today, hopefully there would be good news to come from this. Setting down not too far away from her sister Penthesilea moved forward on large hooves. Though she had a heavy frame the mare could move softly, making nearly no sound at all, a skill that had been learned at a young age. Coming to a stop the mare waited for her sister to finish whatever she was doing, it was best not to interrupt Yakut while she was communicating with nature or else she would surely miss something important.

Stick. No. Rock. No. Tree. No. Where was it? The whispers tickled her ears but she could still not find the source. It was close, of that she was certain, but exactly where was eluding her. Sometimes they played tricks on her, like what was happening now, but Yakut looked at it as a test to prove oneself worthy of receiving their information. Those who were not worthy would give up far too quickly and leave without knowing. But Yakut had patience to spare. She had been doing this for long enough now that she knew things took time, the information would be revealed when the time was right. Obviously she had arrived early as the whispered were more like unintelligible murmurs at this point, but soon enough they would form more solid ideas and thoughts, then her work could truly begin.
The softest of sounds reached her ears just then. It was not the whispers but the approach of her sister. Right on time too, Penthesilea was as predictable and constant as the sun. For a few moments she did not acknowledge her sisters presence, her concentration was on the ground for the moment but slowly her head lifted, a soft wind brushing past them causing the beads on her headdress to sway lightly. "Nothing yet. Too soon, too soon." And then her attention returned to the ground, taking a few steps forward and then turning a bit to the left. The whispers were getting louder, all would be revealed soon. "Arrived just in time." She said with another glance at her sisters. "Answers will come. Good or bad, they will come."
There was a long stretch of silence, save for a bit of mumbling from the dark colored mare. This was not good, not good at all. Too much information at all once, it was being mixed together so that it made no sense whatsoever. A few words managed to sneak through untainted by chaos, but even they did not make much sense alone or together. As the sounds died down Yakut let out a ragged breath. Not at all what she had expected from this day, but perhaps combining this information with what she had heard on the previous days they could form some sort of coherent sentence. Slowly her attention turned to Penthesilea and she gave the lighter colored mare a small smile. "You worry too much. No ill will come to me in my search."

Indeed it would seem that she had arrived just in time. Funny how it worked out like that sometimes. Her sister would wander off, then Penthesilea would go out searching for her only to arrive when the voices spoke the clearest to Yakut. Perhaps they waited so whatever message they had for Yakut could be passed along right away to her twin. Life was strange that way and while that was a possibility it likely was just luck that Penthesilea showed up at the right time so often. Standing quietly while Yakut moved about, likely in an attempt to find the voices, she waited to see her sisters reaction. That sigh was not good. Whatever Yakut had heard was not good news. But that would not discourage them from continuing on.
Before she could speak Yakut mentioned about worrying too much. Letting out a snort Penthesilea shook her head. "I know you are quite capable of taking care of yourself Yakut. But you cannot deny what happened those months ago. We do not know if something like that can or will happen again." The way the herd scattered to the wind it was unlikely, yet one could not drop their guard just because the initial threat was over. Things could lurk in the shadows, watching and waiting for the prime time to strike again. Giving her head another shake to clear those thoughts away she looked towards her sister. "We will continue our search. Any clue as to what direction to travel in today?" Yakut had not said anything regarding what the rocks or trees had told her so Penthesilea was at a lose as to what the sigh had been about or why there was no information shared today.

Yakut smiled at her sister. Penthesilea was always playing the role of overprotective sibling even when she didn't need to. It was a trait that came so naturally to the pale mare that Yakut was convinced that she did it without even thinking about it. In fact it was a trait that was also in their mother. Obviously Penthesilea took more after their mother than Yakut did. They did not know what their father was like, but it was safe to assume he had darker coloration that showed up on herself, whereas Pen took after their mothers lighter color. Had their father been able to communicate with nature? It was possible, though they would never know. That was alright, they had no need for males in their lives at this point, father or not. There would be a time and place for such needs, but now was certainly not the time. Not when there was so much work to be done.
"Unfortunate tragedy should not be forgotten. We have learned from the mistakes and will not repeat them. Those who were lost will never be forgotten, they live on in other ways." Yakut gave a slow bob of her head at these words. Yes, they may be dead but their spirits were alive and well, perhaps even guiding and watching over those who survived. Her attention moved towards a large rock for a few moments. "When looking for something that has been scattered by the wind any direction can prove the correct one." There was no telling in what direction would be best but surely any would prove a good choice today - according to the rock at least. After a few moments pause she looked up towards her sister. "Head to the ocean." And with that she began to walk off, not explaining why they would head in that direction.

Penthesilea lowered her head slightly as Yakut spoke. It had been an unfortunate tragedy that had struck the herd and thinking on all those lives lost was a sad thing indeed. Many had been lucky however and had escaped the slaughter, though those individuals had not been heard from since. Perhaps they were waiting for others to find them, to let them know their home was no longer being torn apart. Whether that was the case or not Penthesilea and Yakut had set out together to try and find any and all who had fled the chaos and bring them home. Whether the same mistakes would be repeated or not they would not know for certain, but it was a hope among them that they all would have learned and do their best to avoid repeating such actions. She liked to think that the spirits of those who lost their lives were watching over the others, ensuring no harm came to them so that the herd could once again survive and become as strong as it had been before.
She gave her head a nod. Yes, any direction would likely lead them to finding one of the missing or at least a clue to their location. It could be hours, days or months before any or all were found but Penthesilea would not rest until she had exhausted all options in finding them. Of course when Yakut suddenly mentioned the ocean her head snapped up. "The ocean?" She questioned of her sister as she hurried after her. What an odd place to look. The survivors were either land bound or winged varieties, they had not had any aquatic breeds in the mix. So why would they go to the ocean. Perhaps looking in the least obvious of spots would prove more fruitful. With a firm not of her head Penthesilea fell into step beside her sister. "It is a fair distance to get there, we will need to fly for the majority of it if we wish to do so quickly." Unless Yakut could think of a reason to draw out the journey and remain on the land for most of it.

The darker mare continued to walk for some time. She would let her sister wonder a bit before giving an answer. Her silence sometimes bothers some of the herd members, they never knew what she was thinking and when she did speak it wasn't always a direct answer. Often she gave them the information they were looking for but it was up to them to interpret her words and find the meaning behind them. Penthesilea was one of the few that was always able to tell what she was saying, this likely had to do with the fact that they were sisters and always near each other. But her sister was also good at a number of other things and Yakut knew her potential in life was bound to grow in the coming months. There was a destiny laid before her sisters feet and Penthesilea only needed to keep moving in order to fulfill that duty.
Finally she broke the silence. "No need to rush. What is there will remain for some time. Seasons may change but all shall remain the same." Lowering her head as he walked Yakut scooped up a mouthful of clover and grass. The clover was sweet and fresh. It reminded her of home, there had been a large patch of clover there. It had been the first place she had heard the whispers of life as a young foal. Since then they had grown from the occasional almost cryptic message here and then to a more constant presence in her life. It was this that had prompted the others to label her as crazy. Yakut knew it wasn't so. These whispers were a gift, perhaps from a higher power or even the spirits of their ancestors. She never questioned who or what they were, for that would be disrespectful. Instead she simply accepted their gift and shared it with those around who were willing to listen.
"Focus and remain strong, destiny awaits all." Yakut mumbled though it was somewhat unclear if she was talking to herself or her sister at this point.

Yakut's silence did not bother her at all as they walked. She knew well that her sister would only speak when there was something of importance to say. Yakut was not one for idle chit chat and there had been times in the past where the mare had said nothing for days because she simply had nothing to tell anyone. Pen was not the silent type, she preferred to talk, though there were times were speaking was inappropriate or not needed. That was one of the major differences between her and Yakut, and likely one of the main reasons how they ended up in such different roles in the herd. She had been an adviser and one of the best at that. From a young age she had learned the way to read ones actions, as well as their words, she could play the role of diplomat if needed, but most importantly of all she was a fierce warrior who would fight for a cause she believed in to the death if needed. Yakut on the other hand remained more at the edge of society and took up herd lore and healing. The others may think her sister crazy, but should ever of them become ill or injured it was Yakut they went to for her superior skills.
Though patient Penthesilea really couldn't understand why they were going to take their time in getting to the ocean. By land it would be several days travel at best, assuming they didn't run into any impassable areas that would either force them to fly or go the long way around. Perhaps she would be given the answer at some point.
A small snort came from the mare. "I know well of destiny Yakut. You of all Soquili should know that." Fate had laid a great deal of responsibility on her shoulders and while she had accepted such a thing as a great honor the pale mare had yet to actually see it through. It wasn't that she didn't want to destiny placed upon her, no she was extremely grateful for the chance even if it had come as a result of great tragedy, but in order to do so they needed to find some of the old members and bring them home. Then and only then could she truly follow the path laid before her. A role she knew she was ready to see through.

Step after step Yakut let her hooves hit the ground heavily. The sound echoing up to her ears. Had the ground been wet they likely would have sunk in, but here it was dry, having not rained for several days. Because of this small clouds of dust popped up with each step. Yakut watched the way the dust billowed up closely, as if reading into it somehow. Either that or she just found it entertaining as they went about. Sometimes it was hard for others to tell just what she was up to, and that made life all the more interesting. She enjoyed watching others stand to the side and watch her as she studied a rock, or mumbled something to a stick. Call her cruel but every now and then she would act as though she was talking about whoever was watching her, glancing up at them before turning her attention back to the object and saying something to it in hushed tones. Most of the herd members had caught onto this after a time, but the younger ones, who were unsure of her were easily fooled by this.
Such trickery never worked on her sister of course. Glancing up at the snort Yakut smiled at the pale mare. It wasn't often in their herd that such a great honor was placed upon another, and Penthesilea had certainly earned the right to carry such a title even if few knew of it. Once they found the others word would spread of Penthesilea's elevation. "Knowing of a destiny and fulfilling it are two different things sister." For once she spoke plainly, now was not the time to muddle her response with fancy wording or codes. "Let not the knowledge blind you but instead lead you down the path unscathed." They both knew what could happen should certain obligations not be fulfilled but it was honestly too early for Penthesilea to truly worry about this, but that did not mean she should outright forget them either.

"Yakut you grace me with such simple and yet profound words." It was rare indeed for her sister to speak plainly, Yakut had this great gift of taking even the most simplest of sentences and transforming them into lyrical nightmares if she wished or a hard to decipher code. The fact that she had slipped out of her normal routine spoke greatly. Not only did Yakut get straight to the point, but because she did it laid an even greater undertone of seriousness to their situation, but especially that of Penthesilea's. They walked for a short time before she spoke again, letting her sisters words truly sink in before giving her response. A vast amount of responsibility had been set upon her shoulders and she could not and would not allow that power and knowledge misguide her steps. Nor could she forget about others past mistakes lest she make them herself.
"I both know my destiny and plan to fulfill it. I cannot turn my back on the gift that was bestowed upon me, doing so I become no better than those few whose actions set forth the series of events that led to this." Their choices had been wrong and because of it the entire herd had suffered. Penthesilea knew well that mistakes could happen a second time, mainly because some were foolish enough to believe they were incapable of repeating such offenses but she was not one of them. Mistakes taught great lessons and those who could learn from them were better off because of it.
"I cannot say that I will not be blinded by things, but I do promise you sister that I will do everything in my power to avoid such a fate. Our herd cannot afford to be ripped apart twice and I will not have that blood on my name." Whether the others would believe her or not was up to them, but Penthesilea hoped that over her years of service she had proved herself to them as a capable member. Many had sought her advice over various situations and very few had ever argued with her when such advice was given. She could not be right all of the time and they, she hoped, would understand that. Even the greatest Soquili in existence, and those of the past, can and likely have made some mistakes along the way. But those mistakes paved a path for them and helped shaped their lives, and the lives of those around them, from that point on. She would do the same with her life, because that was the vow she had made those months ago, and only death would stop her from seeing it through.

There was a slight chuckle from the darker mare as she looked over at her sister, a smile on her lips. "A slip of the tongue." She gave her head a dismissive shake, the beads on her headdress rattling together lightly. Yakut preferred to jumble words, not for her own entertainment though that certainly played a role some days, but more to force others to think for themselves. She could only provide them with an answer, it was up to them to interpret it's meaning and set a path towards that. Occasionally, like a moment ago, she would speak plainly, keeping her words simple and to the point, however those who knew her well would know there was a reason behind this. There were some subjects there were too important to fuddle with. Sometimes one had to come right out and say it if only to get the point across quickly. It also helped to accentuate the importance of the situation. If one such as her spoke the truth so plainly then it meant they recipient of that information needed to know exactly that and nothing more.
Lowering her head as they walked she listened to Penthesilea speak. Though it might have seemed like her attention was elsewhere, mainly at the ground directly in front of her hooves, Yakut was indeed listening carefully to the words and the meaning behind them. It was things such as this, what Pen was saying, that had put forth the situations and placed the greatest of honors at her feet. Others could have found themselves in this same position back a few months ago, however it was because Pen saw things as they were and not as others wanted them to be that had been the ultimate deciding factor to the decision. It had come at a time when the herd desperately needed guidance and now Pen would take up that role and be a guide and a leader. They just needed to find the others in order to fulfill this.
After walking for some time Yakut finally paused, using her hoof to shift about a few rocks they had come across, a gently wind blowing a few leaves over them before looking up at her pale sister. "Spoken like one who has been destined to fulfill such a role her entire life." Again Yakut kept her words simple. She began to walk again, they had a long journey ahead and if they were to do the major of it on land then they needed to remain moving at all times. "Many trials lay before you sister, do not forget these words that you spoke today, for they will help you reach the right solutions. Now come the ocean awaits us."

Penthesilea couldn't help but smile. "You should be lucky none of the others are around to hear this apparent slip of the tongue. They would likely be quite shocked by it." Though mentioning their missing herd mates both saddened the pale mare and also renewed her resolve to find them once more and have them return home. For too long they had been separated, some had remained behind but those too had left if only to help in the search. There were times when she wondered if they would ever find them, if the herd would ever truly live again. It was these times that she was glad to have her sister at her side, keeping her moving forward and tossing out the occasional and often cryptic encouraging words and helping to remind her why they were doing this.
She waited patiently as Yakut fussed about the rocks. It was hard to tell at times whether her sister was reading something from the rocks or simply arranging them in a certain order for her own entertainment. The answer would come when Yakut was done, if she felt like explaining her actions. Usually she did, though that was only in cases where the rocks had meant something. Today it seemed like it was the latter, that Yakut had merely touched the rocks to satisfy some need or perhaps to occupy herself with as she thought things over. Falling into step beside her sister once more Penthesilea listened and gave her head a shake. "You and I both know I was not born into this role, though I am deeply honored that it was entrusted to me. I will not forget, these words are my guide and I know that." It is true that she had had a role in the herd that put her in direct contact with the one who previously held her new role, but she had never imagined that it would have fallen to her in the end.
Mention of the ocean reminded Penthesilea of their search, their goals and of their loses once more. But again the question burned in her mind, why the ocean? Why would any of their herd go to the ocean? Winds did not belong in the water. "Tell me sister, why is it that we travel to the ocean?" There had to be some reason that Yakut insisted that they travel there. Perhaps the rocks had revealed something to the darker mare that she had yet to share. There was a chance Yakut would not answer her question, but that would not bother Penthesilea if that turned out to be the case, she would know when the time was right.

There was a hint of a smile that crossed her lips. Yes the others would have a hay day hearing Yakut speak so plainly. But they were not here. They were scattered like fall leaves in a wind storm. It could take months if not years to find them all and yet this little side trip was needed. Though they needed to gather some of their missing herd mates soon there was also a good reason to let them stay scattered for the moment. Having never left the herd previously they would now hopefully learn that their previous actions, especially those that brought on the disaster, were foolish and what they truly needed was the herd to return to what it was before - under new management of course. She did little to acknowledge her sisters words, a simple nod and a barely audible 'mhmm' was all she did.
They walked for many days, stopped only now and then for a short rest before continuing. Many would drop at the pace they set, but they had trained their entire lives to go on little sleep and food if needed. The sooner they arrived at their destination the better, then they could return to the other task at hand. During this leg of the journey Yakut rarely spoke, a mumble here and there to a plant or rock and a few words to her sister were the only things to break the silence. Every now and then they took to the air, flying over an obstacle that Yakut deemed too large or annoying to walk around. In truth some they could have easily traveled around on ground but she simply wished to stretch her wings and a large patch of forest was the perfect excuse to do so.
Today had been mostly open fields. Of course these proved to be distracting as there were many plants vying for her attention. The whispers could be almost deafening at times when faced by so many, all trying to speak louder than the others to get her full attention. A few angry glares and some quick words generally quieted down even the most persistent plant. Just as she won the battle over the whispers a new sound reached her ears. It was the ocean. At long last they were nearly at their destination. Unfurling her wings Yakut took to the air knowing the Penthesilea would be right behind her. She flew hard and fast, eager to get there and sink her hooves into the sand. Landing at a gallop Yakut ran across the width of the beach kicking sand up into the air. Only when she reached the water did she stop, her hooves sitting in the chilly ocean water, waves slowly lapping at her legs. After a few moments she spoke. "Life is ever changing. Much like the ocean. It may look the same but it's not. The surface belies the truth. Things are always shifting, changing, moving, dying and being born. Waves usually small turn large with sudden fury and if one isn't paying attention they will be swept away forever." Her eyes swiveled towards her sister. "Take a lesson from the ocean dear sister."

Though she could generally handle Yakut's silence some days she longed for her sister to say something, anything. Even trying to strike up a conversation proved useless. Yakut just refused to talk. She was certain there was some lesson behind this, there usually was. Yakut always tried to teach her things in the most unusual of ways and certainly days of silence were meant to teach her something. The value of a herd, that's what Penthesilea believed it would be about. All their lives the herd had been there for support, learning, training, friendship and protection. Now they were along and while the pair of them could manage quite easily on their own the knowledge that the herd was scattered weighted heavily. They needed to be brought back together and soon, for the benefit of all. It was why they had left the herd grounds to look for the lost members and bring them back. The herd needed to be rebuilt.
When Yakut suddenly took to the air Penthesilea hurried after her. Her sister had said nothing, simply took off. In the distance she could hear the rolling waves of the ocean and now understood Yakut's hurry. They had been traveling for so long that it was hard not to be excited about finally reaching their destination. Setting down on the beach Penthesilea followed her sister to the edge of the water and listened closely to her words. Yes, she understood what Yakut was saying. That just because one challenge was over didn't mean there weren't others to come. That one could never truly be ready for everything and change was inevitable. The change those few months ago still wore heavily on the pair, and likely the other herd members as well, but they had to soldier through it and face the upcoming changes as best they could. It would mean adapting to things they might not have previously encountered. "I understand." Though why they had traveled all the way to the ocean just to make a point Penthesilea wasn't sure about. "And this is the reason why you brought us to the ocean?" Or was it that Yakut was expecting to find one of the missing herd members way out here? Eyes swept up and down the length of the beach, yet no other Soquili could be seen. Perhaps there was a deeper meaning which Penthesilea had not yet realized. It had happened a time or two before, Yakut always liked to test her the most, even before she become the Soquili she was today, giving her greater challenges than anyone else in the herd. It was something Penthesilea was grateful for, always being pushed not only by her sister but others as well to be the best and then better than the best. To see what may be missed by others and understand what was often misunderstood.

Lowering head head Yakut lipped at the wave rolling in. The taste of the salt water was bitter, but she just had to try it. Drinking salt water could make one thirstier than they had been, which could be deadly if all there was was salt water. Yet she did not allow herself to consume much, just enough to say that she had tasted it and gave her head a shake. How did the water breeds do it? Being surrounded by this stuff day in and out, obviously they drank it too, it was impossible for them to not to. Though obviously their bodies had adapted to endure the harsh of conditions salt water since those breeds thrived in the ocean. "Just when you think you have found the answer, you realize you are more lost than you were before. An unfortunate circumstance. Perhaps the reason you believed was here is elsewhere?" Yes it was time to go back to being elusive with her words, for the moment at least.
Stepping away from the water Yakut walked a short distance along the sandy beach. Sand collected in her fetlocks, making a bit of a mess. Using her hoof she became to draw random shapes in the sand, ignoring her sisters presence for the moment. The drawings had no meaning this time, she simply just wanted to see if the sand could hold a pattern like it was rumored to. And yes it could, as long as the wind didn't blow. Turning once more she looked towards the ocean, it's cast blue body stretched well beyond what they could see. It would be interesting to know just how far it went out from land, yet there was no way either of them could fly that distance, not without having a few places to land along the way, and they couldn't count on there being islands and so the mystery of the ocean would remain just that for now. "No, it is not why I brought us here." Her attention slowly turned to her sister and gave a bit of a shrug of her shoulders. "I always wanted to see the ocean." A smile graced her lips for a moment before she took on a serious look once more. "Now come, we have others to find." And with that Yakut unfurled her wings and took to the air, heading back the way they had come.
