The Enemies

[As you step upon the Ladekahn Plains, you are aware of a warm, comforting wind that takes the chill of the flight from your bones. The morning is pleasant here, and you feel like the journey to where you're going to go is going to be immensely enjoyable. While you're looking around, you're aware of an escort from the nearby Lycanthrope Clan coming to meet you, and the leader greets Alex first before Alex turns to you.]

User ImagePhoenix Alexander: Glad to see everyone's here in one piece. I'd like you to meet the leader of the Plains Lycanthrope, Xanx. He'll inform you about any dangers we'll have to face, seeing as how he knows the area much more than I do. Be polite, and listen well.

[The man who steps forward at Alex's motion is very well built, tall, and confident. There are many battle scars across his chest, and his hair is pulled back into long, thick dreadlocks. The others around him obviously treat him with considerable respect.]

User ImageLadekahn Lycanthrope Leader Xanx: Greetings. It's wonderful to see my clanspeople intermingling with the outside world. [He nods to the Lycanthrope that has accompanied you on your journey.] It is my pleasure to welcome you into our home. Feel free to eat before your journey, but while you do, allow me to inform you about the dangers you might be facing while in our land.

[As he speaks to you, you are led into the village of the Lycanthrope, a lively, noisy place with crackling fires, running children, and hanging, salted meat drying in the morning sun. You are given food and drink, and Xanx motions you to make yourself comfortable around a fire in the middle of the village as he tells you tales of the monsters in these parts.]

Enemy One: The Despari
User Image

Xanx: Because you're in one of the largest plains of the continent, you can only expect to see monsters like this: those built for traveling long distances for very small amounts of effort. These are particularly dangerous because they look just like normal horses. So when one wanders too close to our village, we shoot an arrow at its feet. Normal horses get frightened and flee. These... do not. They don't because they have no fear of death - probably due to the fact they've already experienced it. The poor beasts.

Despari Stats
Strength: Camouflage. The inability to feel pain.
Weakness: A proper holy exorcism will send the spirit of this poor creature back to whence it came.
Habits: They have the nasty habit of ingesting weak souls whenever they come across them.
Any Special Traits?: Despari hide in herds of normal, living horses, using them to travel safely until the ghost horse is alerted to food.

Enemy Two: Sun Hye
User Image

Xanx: Don't be fooled by how cute this creature is. It's not much of a threat on its own, but in packs it can strip livestock down to the bone. It is the hyena of the Ladekahn Plains, with a high-pitched hiccuping call to match.

Sun Hye Stats
Strength: Speed and numbers
Weakness: Though it may be fierce, it still is pretty tiny.
Habits: It uses its call to alert others of its kind in the area.
Any Special Traits?: Where there is one, there are many.

[The talk goes on into the late morning, and you are well fed and actually feeling kind of sleepy when Xanx stands up, wishes you luck, and shakes hands with Alex. Alex, while Xanx goes off to deal with his day to day responsibilities, looks to you.]

Alex: Well, sounds like fun, doesn't it? We don't have much time to spare - let's get going.

"This is astounding. Today, around early morning, I witnessed a creature of the Plains become injured and - instead of running away from its troubles - it limped to a specific pile of stones that were overcome with fungi and moss. At first I thought that the creature had gone there to die, but I saw it take a specific plant and put the leaves on its injury. Then the bleeding stopped. The creature still had a limp, but it was alive! It would live! It's amazing - the creatures of these Plains have knowledge of naturally-occurring healing outside of a body. I have gathered some of these herb and traveled around the Plains asking about it. The human nomads currently in the area claim that they use this herb to heal their sick when their shamans are too weak. They all call this plant variants of the same word: Ra'shana C'lial. Or, to be literal, "Sealing Leaf"."

Alex gazed out at the Ladekahn Plains just as summer reached its peak, the sun shining down heavily but the cooling winds from the Cordalisk Ice Plains sweeping the heat away. Fields of wildflowers stretched to what seemed all the way to the coast.

Taking a small book - a book he could enclose his fist around - he opened it up and read a passage, searching.

"The location of the herbs - the only place I've seen them so far - is-"

"Next to the stones that make a symbol when seen from the sky," Alex muttered to himself, scowling a bit. "A symbol? Hmmm..."

He looked over his shoulder at his companions.

"So... who can fly around here?" Then he rolled his eyes. "Well, besides ME, of course."

Elliot had enjoyed the meal that they were given. It was well seasoned and cooked. He didn't get to eat so much normally, having spent the last year or so searching for Alex Whiteflame. Or, Alex Phoenix as he now went by. Yes, it'd been quite hard to find him and his friends, despite their infamy. He had him now though. All that was left was to let the deception begin. Of course, he planned to wait a bit to drop the brother bombshell. Timing was everything.

Elliot already knew of all of the monsters in the area. He had researched them extensively before he arrived. He knew everything: their markings, their diets, their movement patterns, their cries, and more. The information was needed for things to move smoothly. Things needed to move smoothly if he was to implement his plan. Despite his priar planning, however, he listened intently to the lycanthrope's words. Best to look as young and eager as possible.

Attentive ears picked up the other's mutterings. A symbol? Interesting. Also: easy.

"I can!" he cheerfully volunteered, his smile a mile wide.

The end of the world comes quietly.
In the darkness in which there is no hope, one needs a beacon of light to guide them out of despair.

User ImageThe perfect words never crossed my mind,
'cause there was n o t h i n g in there but YOU.
I felt every once of me screaming out.
But the sound was trapped deep in me.

I could be stuck here for a thousand years,
without your arms to drAg me out.

I needed you.
"There you are, standing right in front of me.
There you are, standing right in front of me."

Alex raised an eyebrow at Elliot, snapping the book shut. Which really wasn't that intense, considering the book was about half the size of his palm.

"Really?" He asked, mildly annoyed already. This guy... with his goofy smile and cheerful attitude... it was his brother all over again.

Well, at least we can tell Mark that he has an ACTUAL twin now. Alex thought grimly. I'm sure they'd have a ball together. He shuddered a little. Oh, Mark-flavored-happiness. EWE.

"Uh, yeah that's great, uh..." Alex opened the journal, sneaking a peek at the piece of paper Alina had given him with all the names of the people who were coming along. "Elliot?" He asked in both confusion and curiosity. Then he immediately reassured himself without even waiting for an answer, nodding and closing the book again. "Yes, Elliot. Good. Good good good. Awesome." He nodded again. Ah, this is so embarrassing. "So, Elliot..." he opened the book again, leafing through it. "Let's see, let's see... Ah!" He continued to read for a moment before closing the book, slipping it into his pocket. "Go ahead and fly northwest for about five miles - towards the center of the Plains. See if you can find anything interesting."

Eloi sat quietly by the fire, watching the exchange between the two phoenixes. This clue that Alex had just brought up had Eloi extremely interested. A symbol?

The main reason Eloi was so interested to progress in this mission was because he believed the farther they went to discover these herbs, perhaps the chance of finding Mae would increase. He knew she was constantly looking for herbs to use and research, so he believed if he did was she also was aspiring to do, perhaps they would bump into each other...and if they didn't, then he would be able to do his own research and save a person's life. It was a win-win situation.

((So, the only reply I can think of making is super short. Basically, shall we just image Elliot all cheerfully chirping, "Sure thing!" and flying off to see if he sees anything? I'll write a full post for his reaction. He just doesn't have much to do otherwise.))

((Sorry it's taken me so ******** long to get back to this. My bad, ladies.))

Once Elliot took to the sky and flew northwest, he would come across something very interesting.

For about half a mile in every direction from a certain point, the earth was barren and dead. The land stood, a stark, angry gray, against the lush green fields of the Ladekahn Plains.

In the center of the death, something sparkled.

It wasn’t my fault.
It wasn’t my fault.
I swear, it wasn’t my fault.

Would I lie to you?

User Image It must have seemed for a while that a few of the names on Alex's list were never going to show up. But just as Elliot took off into the distance, a bright, chirpy caw should alert everyone to the fact that at least one of them had arrived.

A little black bird circled above the group a few times before coming to rest on a fair-sized rock half-hidden in the grass. It cawed a few more times, tilting its head and hopping about on the rock while looking from Alex to each of the others with its bright, beady eyes.

After a few minutes, it stopped hopping and looked at Alex again, seemingly a little disappointed. Then in a whirl of feathers, the bird seemed to vanish and a pretty, dark-haired woman stood in its place. "Sorry I'm late," she said cheerfully. "I, ah..." She gave a little, shamefaced grin. "Got distracted."

She looked around again, frowning a bit. Cybil had come when she'd heard that the quest was for Alina - she'd come to really like the girl over their last quest together.

But it seemed that Alina herself hadn't actually come.

Too bad. Cybil would have liked to see her again.

No, that won’t help…

…You know I would.

Fire is the only thing that matters.

It fights for me.
Destroys for me.
Kills for me.

User Image There was a low, ominous growl a few minutes later. The huge, fiery creature that had arrived was moving slowly, dragging its great paws. It was so obvious that he didn't want to be there. The enormous head swung slowly back and forth like a pendulum, as though he were scanning for danger even where it was clear that none existed. It seemed like an oddly fearful move for such a vicious-looking animal - he was nearly the size of a horse, and had long silvery-grey marks where no hair grew; those were clearly old battle scars.

Then he got close enough that the small girl sitting on his back, almost hidden amidst the flames and the horns and the thick dark fur, was visible. Suddenly his tension made sense; he wasn't being cautious for himself. He was guarding his girl.

It had been a very long time since Maetus had willingly approached a group of people, or since he had allowed Avalon to do the same.

Avalon rested one tiny hand on the creature's big neck and muttered something. Maetus growled deep in his throat in response, but the flames around his body dimmed until they were more like a faint glow than a signal fire. Pleased with the change, Avalon patted him once lightly and hopped down.

Once she was on her own feet as opposed to her familiar's, she proved to be even smaller than she'd looked up there. The top of her head barely reached Maetus's shoulder. But she held herself with a kind of cold confidence that suggested that she knew how to handle herself.

Avalon had learned a long time ago how to handle herself.

Though she dipped her head in acknowledgement of Alex and of Xanx when they approached, she didn't offer an explanation for why they'd taken so long. She didn't think it was necessary, or, frankly, anyone else's business.

And isn’t that how it should be?

After all, it is mine.

Eloi looked at the girl who had changed from the black bird, noticing she was exceptionally beautiful...he stopped his train of thought right there. It was not right to think of those sorts of things. He saw her frown. "Not good enough for you?" he commented mildly, with very little emotion. He was referring to the company around the fire.

Internally, he balked at himself. It was strange how cheeky he had just been, and he didn't understand it. Perhaps he had spent too much time away from the rest of the priests and their attitudes? Or perhaps Eloi was just picking up on others' attitudes from past travels. He wasn't meaning to be rude, not at all. He had no distrust or dislike for this girl at all. He hoped that would stay the same throughout the entire quest.

User Image Cybil brushed her heavy dark hair out of her face, pausing when she realized that someone was addressing her.

Slowly, she swiveled until she faced the speaker, examining his mild face and his dress. He looked like a Priest to her. Usually they were kind of adorable and mildly helpless, so Cybil liked them. This one seemed to be a little abashed about his moment of tartness, which made Cybil decide that he was cute and she could be friends with this boy.

She looked at him in long, thoughtful silence, letting it stretch out for several minutes. When at last he must have thought she'd been severely offended by what he'd said, she broke into a beaming smile. "Not at all," she said cheerfully. "I'd signed up hoping that an acquaintance from another quest would be here, but seemingly she's occupied. Ah well, it happens."

Dancing across until she was standing directly in front of him, she tilted her head and examined him with birdlike curiosity. "And you are?"

No, that won’t help…

"Eloi Beauclerc," he said, standing up and bowing his head slightly, his form of greeting. He usually kept physical contact to a minimum, especially to those he had barely met. "It seems that our hopes are somewhat similar." He was referring to her comment about how she was hoping one of her acquaintances would be here. His thoughts briefly trailed to Mae...where could she be?

It was a beautiful day out, and, if Elliot was one to appreciate beauty, he would have enjoyed it. As it was, the closest he came was appreciating the gentle breeze which was helpful when flying and the clear skies which were helpful for scouting. Unfortunately, with everything as green as it was, it seemed like it was going to be difficult to search out much of anything interesting. At least, that was how it seemed until he came across a patch of completely desolated ground. It was suspiciously gray. He swooped a bit lower to examine it when, as a trick of angle and light, he spotted something sparkling in the center. Well, as much as he would love to fly in closer and observe, he was under orders to report back upon finding something. This seemed like something enough.

Five minutes later and he was landing back down near the others. "Well, I found something that sparkles in the middle of an odd patch of dead land! Is that interesting enough for you?"
