The Happy Prince - Oscar Wilde
Swallow is a gypsy lad. He courted a young lady in Germany, she was a pretty, pale little thing. And while his cousins, aunts and uncles, and friends all began their trek south to Egypt, Swallow stayed. It grew colder and Swallow missed traveling. But the girl would not leave her homeland and Swallow could not suppress his wanderlust. They said tearful goodbyes and south he traveled, so that he may catch a boat. He stopped in a city in Southern Germany. His coin purse was low and so he could not afford a hotel. Instead he cuddles up between the feet of a statue of a Prince covered in gold, with blue eyes and a ruby in his sword.
The Prince was once a living man who had enjoyed life via music and dancing and parties. He had never been truly happy, though he did not know any other way of life. Upon his death the statue was erected and his soul caught. He watched his city and felt only sadness at the destitution the thrived around him.
