cєℓєsтιαℓ ғιʀєғℓιєs:

So, with Poseidon gone and Galileo in his place (I have to get pics), I decided to shoot for a couple of ADFs. It's the 3 of them plus a snail in a planted 5gal (I've mentioned it before).

Galileo left the frogs alone. Pretty much ignores them. Yippee! But now I've got a problem on my hands: I feed them shrimp pellets, and Galileo gets betta pellets. Only thing is, the shrimp pellets tend not to make it to the frogs because Galileo literally STUFFS HIMSELF FULL of shrimp pellets. Fat little gut and everything until it all gets digested. I freaked out the first time I saw it.

Problem 1: How do I feed them separately with the least stress induced? I've thought of netting Galileo or somehow separating him when it comes time to feed the frogs, but I don't want to stress him out. I tried feeding him on one side while quickly tossing the pellets on the other side, but he still goes after them when he's done.

Oh, but I have not tried feeding the frogs with the lights out (I forgot but I'm going to attempt it). Does that generally work?

That brings us to problem 2: I think the frogs are attacking him over it. I came home today and there is a chunk out of his tail. I don't know if it's because one (or both) has an aggressive personality or if it's food wars. I'm going to first see if solving the food problem will fix it. Then I'm going to see if I can't fix it through more plants/hiding spots for the frogs and the betta. If not, well... I don't know. Anything else I should consider for that problem?

You get pics, missy, or you'll be in big trouble :p

For your first issue, try putting Galileo in a cup for feeding for a few weeks, and let him out when the frogs are done eating. He'll get used to it once he realizes there is food involved with the cup (or net, or whatever). Eventually work him into eating his food, and not the frogs food. Differnt ways work for different bettas. I taught Ume to not eat the frogs food by feeding the frogs first, and then Ume, so that the frogs had time to eat while Ume was still being a retard looking for the food that was in front of his face lol

I don't feed my frogs when the lights are out unless the frogs are out and about rooting around for food.

For your second problem, this is normal. They aren't attacking him over the food, but rather because they hunt by movement, and have very poor eyesight, they will go after anything that goes in front of their face. The betta will learn to stay away from them when food is in the tank.

I wouldn't advise removing anyone from the tank, this is horribly stressful for the fish, it won't teach them anything. When it comes to intelligent fish (I'm not sure if I'd classify bettas and dwarf frogs as intelligent, but they're not something I've kept for a long time either) they learn that if they're being mean to other fish, it makes the other fish that they don't like disappear, and encourages the behavior, thus leaving you with a nasty fish in the long run. But this is probably a bit of a different scenario. (disappear meaning either they move to a tank where they're alone or you move them out of the fish's territory)

When it came to my raphael catfish being shy back when I had larger fish, I could only feed them after hours before going to bed. My tank lights turn on at 12 and turn off around 8. I believe dwarf frogs are also nocturnal, so this may be a method for you to try. Feed them when the betta is sleeping, probably before you go to bed.
