Nuru yawned and nuzzled into his current ‘pillow’ aka a huge leaf with grass clippings inside to fluff it up. He was presently burrowed into a cavern to avoid the sunshine as he preferred to stay awake for the night and its stars. “So comfy,” He mumbled dreamily not even shivering as the cave provided just the right temperature. “This is the life. Albeit a lonely one at times.” Sometimes being on a weird sleeping schedule made it difficult to make new friends or love interests. Then again he had met a female that was like him sleep-pattern wise. A lovely little thing, in which, he had spent a night of passion with and it had been… memorable.
Diefenbaker nosed the ground trying to find the trail of a missing pup, it had been sometime since the pup had been with the mother and naturally everyone in the pack was worried. It was his job to scout the area for land yes, but this was something even more important than expansion. He felt himself slowing down and thought about taking a rest but then another image of a scared lost pup made him shake it off. But then would running himself ragged help the situation? …. A little break would call for the time being, if only for a minute.
The noises outside his current-quick homemade Nuru’Nox shuffle awake and blink. Seriously? He was just nodding off again and he was comfortable. It smelled like… he wrinkled his nose. Dog. Maybe if he ignored it the noise would go away. He closed his eyes and burrowed deeper. It was working, it was wor-“Awh come on.” With a frustrated huff he got up and stomped his small feet towards the homing of the cave. “Really? Do you have to be so loud! Tryin’ to sleep here!”
Diefenbaker smelled something suspicious, not only was that but there a familiar smell of pup lingering around this area. “It would seem I am on the right track after all.” He murmured his approval. “Greatness.” The word slipped out, a familiar word used by a close friend, as he wandered closer to the semi-hidden cave. Dief pawed around the area sniffing, lifting, and digging trying to find out more clues. Another scent caught his attention, a cheetah. He took another deep breath and found it was male as the scent was muskier than a female’s flowery scent. “Oh dear,” He wasn’t shocked when a cheetah appeared but the grumpiness of his attitude was not welcome. “Um sorry to interrupt your rest, but I am on a mission. I am looking for a young wild dog that is lost and the scent he was here recently.” Dief found it weird that one would sleep during the day well unless they had been on a recon mission.
The words broke through his grumpiness. A missing pup? Ah, that wasn’t good. “Oh, I see that’s … horrible. I hope you find him soon, it’s not really safe for someone so young to be out alone.” He blinked semi-awake and somewhat concerned; it didn’t really hit him as much as it would if the lost baby was his own. “I can tell you this that I haven’t seen any wild dogs besides you and I wish you luck in finding him.”
“Thank you kindly,” He accepted the luck and looked around the area. “I feel like I am close though which is like I said good progress.” He eyed the surprisingly calm cheetah most felines didn’t react to him as such. Well, accept that one time he ran into the god of laughter. That had been interesting experience indeed. “I guess I should be on my way. Daylight is quickly disappearing and that pup is probably upset.” He was about to nod his head when he got a scent. “The pup!”
Nuru’Nox was happy to see the wild dog was going on his way but he couldn’t help feeling a sense of foreboding. He had a feeling he would be seeing the wild dog again, sooner rather than later. He was about to turn around and go back to sleep when the sudden cry of ‘pup’ made him sighed and turn around. ‘ I guess it really was sooner.’ Nuru took in the alert stiff pose of the male in front of him. Clearly he had gotten the scent. “Well best of luck-” He tried to quickly get out.
The key word being ‘tried’.
Somehow a few minutes later he found himself roped into helping out said wild dog play search and rescue.
“I need your help,” Dief spoke sternly to the cheetah and started to herd him towards the area in which the smell was strongly coming from. “-I'm afraid we don't have much time. It would be greatly appreciated and most beneficial to the success of finding him. My name is Diefenbaker by the way, it was rude of me not to say so before.”
“Dief huh? I’m Nuru’Nox but you can call me Nox.”Nuru’Nox stumbled along with the wild dog; I mean he JUST woke up technically. At least that is what he will use as an excuse for what happened next. He was keeping up a somewhat good pace trying to avoid the holes in the ground. “What’s the pups nam-” Before he could finish he felt like the earth had opened up and swallowed him. He was falling one minute and then the next he landed with an ‘oof’. A little cry was heard over to the left of him. Two little blue eyes stared frightfully at him. “I think I found him.” Nuru spoke dazedly looking up at Dief who was peering downward.
It took a few close ones but Dief finally got both cheetah and pup out of the sink hole. “A job well done indeed,” Dief smiled Nuru’Nox in praise while nuzzling the pup to comfort him from the traumatic experience. “You certainly could do well in search and rescue.” But from the look on the others face Dief didn’t like the thought of that. Some could handle the days upon days of travel, starvation, and determination while some couldn’t. I guess it took a selected few. In any case, the job was done and the pup found. He gave Nox one last wave but he gathered up the baby. A great day indeed to be sure as he began to lead the pup back towards home.
