tab Southeast of the Plates of Folhat is a port town by the name of Nilam. Like most places in the Radiant Wastes, this area was uninhabited for a long time following the country's collapse, but unlike in most other places this was due to external factors.
tab Before the destruction that ravaged the country, there was a metropolis located on the southeastern coast that grew to be the largest trade hub in the Land of Wind, eclipsing even Sunagakure itself. After the destruction it remained, doing business and finding profit as best it could with the country dying to radiation and illness. Well before the lack of people became a problem, however, the city was wiped off the map by a tsunami. Only three things remain of its old glory: short stretches of aqueducts, overturned shells of ships glittering like pearls in the sunlight, and a kilometers-wide harbor that still attracts traders.
tab To outsiders, Nilam likely appears odd. The buildings are largely concentrated around the harbor and are made from the hulls of rescued ships. Smaller buildings farther from the harbor tend to be made from stone, wood, and other readily available materials, but will still feature smaller parts of ships. It's customary to keep these parts painted, with brighter, imported colors seen as a sign of social prestige. The sea breeze keeps much of the radiation at bay, so people here tend to be rather healthy compared to those in other regions.
tab While the city is largely inhabited by traders, the core population--the people who will stick around no matter what--are a group of Azhura known as the Hurin. Many Hurin work as shipwrights, sometimes heading into the foothills to the west to mine, and very rarely as shiphands. Almost all Azhura outside the Land of Radiance are Hurin. Hurin children have both their left and right mouths sealed starting at three years of age and they are taught to follow the instincts of their central face above all else. Adults cover either their left or right face with a painted mask. Which face is covered and what design the mask bears are determined with a test after three years of work in one field, which is considered the point at which one passes into adulthood. This test varies based on the taker's discipline and is known as "The Unsealing", as the face that doesn't receive the mask has its mouth freed.
tab Every year on the third day after the summer solstice there is a city-wide celebration of Nilam's continued existence, known as Reclamation Day. The main event of Reclamation Day is the ship raising: in the evening, every able-bodied adult gathers and salvages a sunken ship from the ocean, with onlookers expected to provide musical accompaniment. After the ship raising, a feast is held. It is customary to season one's food with some salt taken from the hull of the raised ship as a sign of defiance toward the sea and also as an acknowledgment of its power.

tab • The Chop Shop - A collection of warehouses on the coast that are used as a studio for boatwrights. The ships that come out of here vary wildly in quality and design sense. Some of the younger Hurin use this place as a sort of school before they get their first jobs in the field.
tab • Marketplace - While the whole city is more or less a marketplace, the area actually known as such is so densely packed with stores that there's almost no need to shop anywhere else. That is, of course, if one can get through the dense crush of people that squeeze through the tight streets on a daily basis.
tab • Nilam Freightyard - The Nilam-side stop of the Nilam Freight Line, which carries cargo to and from the Kyde Foothills. A great number of workshops and warehouses surround this stop and property here is in extremely high demand. Work almost never stops in this area, with shipments arriving in the night and work beginning anew in the daytime. Dawdling is a good way to get run over by a cart or wagon.
tab • The Exchange - A massive green ship that sits at the heart of the port. The Exchange was named as such because traders gather here to scope out prices of local goods and cut deals. On the uppermost level is a small room where the heads of the biggest companies meet to discuss the goings-on of the day and shoot the breeze away from the rest of the rabble. For those looking for work, this is a good place to stop, as anyone who looks bored will likely get dragged into some money making scheme or another.

tab • Patrollers - In lieu of a traditional police force, Port Nilam uses the security forces of the companies within its borders in exchange for reduced tariffs. The composition and skill level of any given group of security officers is almost entirely random.
tab • Salty Scuttlers - Small, salt-encrusted crabs known for smashing their way through ship hulls and nesting in unoccupied houses. They’re relatively weak. Locals will sear or fry them in butter and herbs.
tab • Leggy Prawns - Saltwater prawns that vary in size based on their age. Babies are hardly any bigger than a regular shrimp, and adults can grow up to the size of a person before the stress of molting reaches a point where it overwhelms them. On average, a leggy prawn reaches this point at 10-11 years of age. Leggy prawns, true to their name, have two very long “legs”, at the end of which is a claw-shaped mass of chitin. They attack by kicking (or punching, depending on who’s talking) with these appendages, which are twice as long as the main body. The speed of these attacks is truly astonishing; adults are sometimes able to knock out other animals just by punching near them and letting the shockwave do the rest.

tab • Shrimp Oil - A fatty oil extracted from adult leggy prawns. It’s extremely bitter on its own, so is usually extracted before the meat is cooked. It’s a very reliable lubricant with a very low freezing point and low flammability, making it popular among crafters and those who work with heavy equipment.
tab • Seashells - Seashells, typically found on the beach. Crabs will sometimes hoard them for unknown reasons. Larger shells can sometimes be traded to collectors for cash or favors, but the main reason people pick them up is because they’re pretty.
