Whatever else Len was, he wasn't suicidal. He swallowed his terror and regrets and jogged onwards, not sprinting now that nothing was immediately after him, but not walking either, walking was too slow. The guides had mentioned a helicopter, but Len knew enough about helicopters to know that trying to fly one when you didn't know what you were doing was also a suicidal kind of thing to do. He sort of remembered there being a river on the map, marked with boat stations. Maybe there was a boat there he could take, if he could get there.
When the man in the labcoat dropped out of the trees right in front of Len, he almost screamed; but Dr. Moore didn't seem interested in chatting. He handed off a piece of paper and swung back into the trees like Tarzan, or maybe Spiderman, and Len gaped after the scientist for a minute. What had that been on his wrist, and how was the guy not dead?
The paper was a map. A map marked with the words SAFE PLACE. Len's goals shifted immediately. If anyone would know where to go to safety in this nightmare, it'd be one of the guys who'd made the park, and Len took a moment to puzzle out which way the map was telling him to go, then changed directions and headed off again at a faster jog.
He burst into a clearing and saw the most welcome sight of his life. An SUV was sitting in the grass, its doors open, and most importantly, the keys still hanging from the ignition. Len carefully didn't think about where the previous driver might be. Some remnant of survival instinct surfaced, and he edged close enough to peek into the back of the vehicle, checking it for any unwelcome passengers. He couldn't see anything. Score. He circled the SUV, slammed the rest of the doors, climbed into the driver's seat, and turned the keys, offering a prayer to whatever might be out there.
The engine turned over and the car came to life. Len sagged over the wheel in infinite relief, fighting back tears of stress and panic. No time for that. "Drive now, panic attack later," he mumbled.
