Lazarus had been flying for some time and he could feel his sides straining from the effort. It was a bright, sunny day, and warm air rose steadily from beneath to keep him aloft, but he wasn’t as light as a bird, nor was he a particularly good flier. He didn’t know what had overcome him to start prancing around in the sky in the first place – all he knew now was that he wanted to land, and quickly at that.

At first, luck seemed to be on his side: he spotted a wide clearing and he swerved to meet it. But then, an unexpected gust blew past and Lazarus, inexperienced as he was, ended up spilling the wind from his wings too quickly. With a little scream he fell, though thankfully he was already close to the ground and didn’t go too far. Alas, landed at the top of a slope and soon found himself sliding down against it on his side, a cloud of dust following after. Worst of all, he was certain he’d seen someone nearby, who was sure to notice his less-than-subtle descent.

Another day, another meal.

Zopyros wasn't much of a gourmet; he basically ate whatever plant matter he could easily stuff into his partially sealed muzzle, and that was that. He was standing at the edge of a clearing, at the foot of a hill. He wasn't eating the grass around it, though. He decided to pick the leaves and berries off a shaded bush, instead. It took less effort than trying to clip the grass through the stitches.

He had made a decent amount of progress when the peace was suddenly broken by an overhead scream. Startled, his head shot up in time to see a large shape crash at the top of the slope. He watched in stunned silence as the shape proceeded to slide down in a flurry of dust.

... Okay, what was that all about?

Politeness would dictate that he investigate and see if the other Soquili was all right. Zopyros sighed, and slowly made his way over. What kind of feathered moron couldn't even fly straight? He didn't even have wings and he was convinced he could do better than that. Maybe the guy had been dropped on his head as a foal.

Zopyros looked at the heap of Soquili that was Lazarus, and raised an eyebrow. "You okay?" he asked, without an ounce of real concern.

Lazarus inwardly groaned when, sure enough, he could hear the soft hoof falls of a stranger approaching. He rolled to his feet and rose with as much dignity as he could, which was not much at all, considering the feeble whine that slipped unintentionally from his lips and the grass and dirt that covered him like a second coat.

I’m fine,” he said, the honesty in his voice as abundant as the concern had been in Zophyros’. His pride had been terribly wounded, but at least he didn’t have much left to lose now. He shook and sneezed and rolled his wings, dislodging a good chunk of the debris, a handful of which fell towards his companion’s face.

Know where I could find a stream, by any chance?” he asked casually as he picked a few dandelions off his scarf, hoping that if acted nonchalant about the whole experience, the blue-pelted stallion would, too.

Ugh, what a pitiful, pitiful fool. Zopyros just stood there motionless, even when clods of dirt hit his face. His mind was having so much trouble understanding how this guy could even exist that he briefly seemed to forget how to move.

Disgusting. He wanted to shout at the guy to at least make some effort to not look so pathetic. Seriously, after that little display he needed all the help he could get. But not from Zopyros, of course. The more he stood with the other Soquili, the more he could feel the shame and indignity creeping towards him too. What if someone saw them and thought they were companions?

So, of course, the stranger wanted his help.

"Yeah, why?" Zopyros asked with much more force than was necessary. "I don't think a little water is going to help.... all of this." He looked Lazarus up and down pointedly and smirked nastily.

But the smirk quickly turned into a scowl. The closest one he could think of was hidden in the trees, and difficult to find unless you knew where it was. He'd have to take Lazarus there. Zopyros could just... leave him there, he supposed. And no one would see them through the trees. At least they wouldn't be seen standing together in the clearing anymore.

"Ugh. Okay... You'll have to follow me. If you can even walk straight," he said, barely resisting the urge to roll his eyes. Eye rolling wasn't very dignified, and someone had to keep up appearances.

Without waiting for Lazarus to say something, Zopyros turned on a hoof and stomped towards the treeline.

Lazarus looked down at himself, as if surprised that anyone could even imply, let alone state, that he was anything less than beautiful. It was true that on top of his recent fall, he hadn’t bathed in months, and a few bits and pieces of foliage had stuck themselves between his scales back on his neck where he couldn’t reach, but surely they were inconsequential details in the grand scheme of him. Was the stranger joking?

When he finally returned his gaze to his blue-pelted companion, his expression was one of confused offense, though by then the stallion had already turned round and could no longer see him. Pff, of course.

Thank you,” he said, graciously choosing to ignore the second half of the comment. It truly was a pity, none of the stallion’s attempts at humor came even close at getting a laugh out of him.

So, Stich,” he began, giving the stranger his own personal nickname and sliding up easily beside him, “how long have you been in the area?
