Otto was so used to sunshine on the island, he hardly remembered the time it was covered in thick fog. It was a lot less dreary, even if his own circumstances were dark and gray lately.

Spars were a lot of good nowadays. An outdoor activity, finally letting his skin get a little more colour. A way to 'socialize' without the awkward activity known as small talk. A way to keep his skills sharp. He used to dislike spars. Now? They were one of the better pass times.

Tenya agreed.

The teen threw the six foot boomerang through the air, watching it soar into the sky before homing in back to Otto. All he ever had to do was wait, and a sparring partner usually turned up eventually.

Shiloh, much like the weather lately, never seemed to have a lack of sunshine. Although shadows slipped in more easily now than they did before, and there were moments when his brightness faltered, he did his best to keep his sunny disposition, even if it was only pretend it made life more bearable.

He used to be a far more frequent visitor on the training fields but since the incident, he'd tried his best to train alone, slowly building his strength back, and his nerves. It wasn't like him to be nervous but there was an uncertainty in his step as he set foot onto the fields, eyeing the training dummies until the sight of a massive boomerang caught his attention, impossible to ignore as it whistled across the field and back to it's master. It was a formidable looking piece of equipment, but Shiloh quieted the tightening of his chest, ignoring the flash of ache that settling across the scars there, and he forced a smile, sheepishly waving at the Death hunter. He'd made a bit of an idiot of himself in front of Otto the last time, and as he was now a junior in Otto's division, he hoped that it hadn't been idiotic enough to lose the teen's respect. Allies were hard to find on Deus, and sure there was a lot he could learn from the other hunter, if given the chance.

Thinking about Caelius was somehow less frightening than thinking about Rep, and his anxieties withered away as he approached Otto, Haruko swinging at his side.

He could do this.

"Good day for some practice, huh?"

Bingo! It worked. He hadn't seen much of Shiloh since his last encounter with him, aside from naked kitten shenanigans. Trainees doing stupid things was so common, and hardly any of his business. Otto didn't like babysitting.

"Sure is." he murmured back, turning a solemn eye to the skies. He liked the lack of fog, even if it meant they had no shields.

"I need a partner. You up for it?" He leaned on Tenya, eyeing the other hunter wit an expectant look. This kid had almost died here once. Or did die. Either or. He wondered if that bothered him at all. Not that he cared, or anything. It was a simple curiosity. Rep's antics tended to be infamous.

Shiloh followed Otto's gaze upwards, but it was with a smile, turning back to him only when he spoke. A partner... Right, sparring. That was how people trained after all, and as he eyed the dummies, he knew he'd have to get back into the swing sooner or later. The passive wooden figures were no comparison for the experience against a living opponent. He hoisted Haruko up a bit, and gave a slow nod.

"Yeah, it's probably about time I get back into the game. I'm a little rusty though, so try not to kick my a** too badly."

His grin belied his nerves but he resolved himself not to let them get the better of him. Otto wasn't Rep, it wasn't going to happen again. He knew his limits better now, he had to trust himself, and Haruko, they'd know when to stop and step away. It was wholly different anyway, the atmosphere with Otto, younger than him yet wise beyond his years, far smarter and able, Shiloh admired him.

"Let me know when you're ready," he said, taking a step backward.

"Ready when you are." He murmured, swinging Tenya up and in front of him, ready to attack.

A spar to Otto was just mutual physical training, not a contest of strength. He'd battled a handful of lower ranked hunters recently, and not a one came out with any notable injuries. Otto himself didn't care to be bedridden over something as simple as a spar.

Otto was ready, he was ready, it was time to get this started. Well, he was almost ready.

He had to move backward to make the best use of Haruko's weight, to leverage enough strength to send her flying but it gave the split second reprieve of breathing, of feeling her smooth chain sliding through his gloves, the hefty weight of her tugging at his arms as he swung her around. Shiloh wasn't inherently a fighter but what he lacked in natural bloodthirst he made up for with heart, a heart that was inexplicably twined now with the Inugami in his head, they were partners and together they'd managed to survive even death, neither of them creatures willing to give up or roll over, not for anything.

Shiloh stepped forward, Haruko's metal jaws following the arc of his arm and crashing straight towards Otto. It was just a spar, that's all this was, but damn it felt good to climb back into the saddle.

Otto was ready, swinging Tenya out in an arc to counteract Haruko. However, the attack had been stronger than he anticipated, cutting across his arm and Tenya's shield. He clenched his teeth but did not falter.

With two wide sweeping spins, Otto lashed out with Tenya's bladed edges, hurling the weapon at Shiloh.

Tenya's blades swung in his direction but he was on the upswing, in the middle of gathering Haruko back up and just narrowly, and by stroke of luck, rather than skill, avoided getting hit. In fact, a bit oblviously he almost didn't realize how close Tenya had gotten, already swinging his weapon back in Otto's direction again. Training by himself might have been lonely, but he'd definitely improved his strength.

Unfortunately, the same could not be said for his accuracy.

Surprisingly, Otto didn't seem to have the upper hand for once. Whatever was throwing off his game was doing a bang up job. The teen swept aside Shiloh's weapon as it came at him, gripping Tenya tightly as he surged forward to strike at him again.

Shiloh wasn't even all that intimidating. He was only slightly taller, wore silly ducky boots. Maybe the chomping weapon of his? No, that sort of thing never bothered him.

Maybe it was just an off day.

Truthfully he wasn't that formidable an opponent but he did believe in giving it his all, as did Haruko, and their partnership today was thus far spot on, having only strengthened since their reunion. Tenya grazed his arm, a spark against his shield but it wasn't enough to halt his turn, or to stop the impending swing of Haruko's weighty jaws.

He was entirely focused, him and Haruko and only Otto in front of them, having found it surprisingly easy to leave his nerves behind once the spar had begun, easy to ignore anything that might break his concentration when he was given something to focus on so intently.

Maybe everything wrong in his life was weighing down on him harder than he knew. Nevada's plummeting health, his unrest with his job, Maebe's odd fascination with him. Something was making him unable to bring himself to fight at full strength, and it was making him worry even more.

The teen took the hits from Shiloh in stride as best he could, swinging out with Tenya in turn.

Otto struck again and this time hit home, Tenya's blade crackling against his shield, forcing Shiloh backward. There was no way he could use Haruko's full strength at such close range and instead he brought her up at the last minute, grabbing onto her metal face himself in attempt to block and drive Otto back.

He forced a grin, breathing a bit labored as he pushed.

"You don't have to take it that easy," he teased, forcing a grin between catching his breath as he tried to push Otto back. He hadn't taken a lot of damage, but Otto's resilience impressed him, and though he teased it was purely in jest, hoping he might inspire the more experienced hunter to his full potential. That was the point after all, of a spar, it was no use winning without giving it your all.

The sad part? Otto really was trying to give it his all. It just wasn't working. To think he wanted to switch divisions to the front lines. Like this? He'd die on day one. What was going on?!

Shiloh's teasing hurt a little, and he made it known with a deep scowl. Shiloh was trying to push him back, and Otto obliged.

After all, Tenya was made for long distance fighting.

He jogged back a few steps, twirling Tenya over his head before releasing her into the air. The weapon flew past Shiloh, turned 180 degrees a few yards away, and zipped back to Otto after slicing across Shiloh's shoulder on the return.

Otto scowled and Shiloh faltered again, having not meant any ill-will but only pleasant banter but the scowl was followed by a wallop from Tenya, the boomerang flying across the field and into him. He grasped at his shoulder, habit of injury, of forgetting his shield but it was still there in tact and he grinned as he steadied himself.

"That's more like it," he called, cheering, oddly rooting for Otto as much as he was for himself. It was exhilarating and he forgot his apprehension, his fear. This is what spars should be, an exchange of knowledge, a learning experience and a way to hone their art. He'd forgotten it, been afraid to come back to it but, as he sent Haruko flying towards Otto, he was remembering it quickly.

Shiloh meant well, and it was in that well meaning that Otto was able to keep his temper cool. Shiloh wasn't like others he could name, who teased in order to illicit a negative reaction.

Otto hissed as Haruko's form connected, pulling away from Shiloh's reach with the weapon enough to bring up Tenya, swinging downward at the other hunter's form.
