This memory came to me as I was submitting a document into FFnet's doc manager and the formatting got all blown up. So, I remember reading this fic and one of the chapters was poorly formatted- I'm talking a massive text wall with "/br" and "/text-alignment=" everywhere, to the point that the chapter couldn't even be read without extreme difficulty. I pointed this out to the author via review (seeing as how they disabled messaging) only to have the author edit the chapter and try to "call me out" in an author's note as being a troll since there was "nothing wrong" with the chapter. I dropped it so quick and moved on since I didn't want to get dragged into some petty fight.

Anyway, this got me wondering about everyone else's worst fanfiction experiences, be it an altercation with an author, an awful reviewer, or reading what you consider to be the single most terrible fic you've ever encountered. Anyone have any interesting stories? I know I can't be the only one. However, I'd prefer if we tried not to name-drop in here.

That happened too me once, had to re-paste it too work but luckily I have this habit of checking the chapter itself to look mistakes so I spotted it rather quickly. >3>.

hmmm a thing I hate about some fics is if the author mispells the name not just one but every chapter...I want to cry crying

What's funnier is if they misspell a character name and it's their own original character. It's like... are you even trying or is this a joke? sweatdrop

Some sure do. It's a bit confusing for the reader because it's a character that they aren't familiar with, so when that character's name is consistently messed up the reader doesn't know what the correct spelling really is (at least, that's how it was for me when I read a story with a character named Sera/Sarah/Serah/Sara/Srah on Quizilla eons ago).

I'm writing a Drabble fic. It even says it's a drabble fic in the summary. Reviewer called my fic trash because the amount of chapters it had had "too low of a word count". As well as I should "let people know if it's a drabble fic to begin with".

I was really torn up about it for awhile but Violent Crow and Night Kunoichi helped me get through most of it. I was just really upset because it's something that I am incredibly passionate about and I just wanted to curl up and cry all day. crying sweatdrop

Yeah, okay... That. Am I the only one who feels like if there's any misunderstanding at all when it comes to fanfics, it's the author who always gets the brunt of things? I think it's mostly because the person/reader/reviewer who causes grief can just walk away while the author has that scar left on their story. Thank goodness anon reviews can be deleted (mental scars, not so much), since I've had this one person consistently post about how I'm sexist because my protag is female (there's a male one, but that reader couldn't be bothered to realize that).

Anyway, enough about my nonsense. Some people just want to cause trouble. And in your case, when they realized that they were wrong they got massively upset because "oh my god I was wrong on the interwebs in front of all these strangers who don't know me!" and lashed out at you.

Copy-paste from my post in another thread because I'm a lazy slob:

Quote:
Well, there's this one author that I ran across who just does a bunch of posturing; endlessly talking about how many hits, reviews, follows/favorites their stories get. Talking about how proud you are that you've reached x amount of reviews/hits/followers is okay in itself because it's awesome when your work gets recognition, but I'm talking the extreme here. If this author were to give just a few more updates, it would be as if they were giving a live-feed of when their story gets a single hit.

Now, about this post... I'll admit that I was a bit jealous because this author had upwards of 1k reviews and not a single story had under 300 reviews. But come on. It's pretty easy to cross that line between being proud of yourself and your accomplishments and then just shamelessly boasting about it damn near every waking moment.

I totally feel for the authors that get crap from readers who just aren't satisfied. It's rare, but I've seen other readers defend the author in their reviews, and that gives me some faith back.

It's just that particular review sent me over the edge when they said "you didn't have to edit the summary to prove me wrong!" just...just...auuugggghhh stressed It was never edited to begin with! They just decided to finally read the whole summary and instead of correcting their error they threw a hissy fit. And it drives me up a wall when I skim through reviews for other authors and I see the exact same thing.

Why is it so hard for some to realize that the author CAN write for their own satisfaction before the reader's? Some stories are written just for fun but I've seen reviews where the reader blew up because a character wasn't "changed enough".

Yes, that poor OC! xd The good thing is that I don't see it frequently. But that might just be because I haven't read very many fics lately.

Let's see... Oh! This is just something that is a minor annoyance that I came across before, but I once read a story in which the author did a really quick copy-paste job where the same two paragraphs repeated and there were bits of a previous chapter in it. I still don't understand why some people don't look over their work before posting. Then again, I'm a bit neurotic when it comes to looking over my work to avoid stuff like that. sweatdrop

Oh! yes I saw that once while reading a One Piece fic, the plot looks really awesome...but the author never updated since last year quite a bummer. But yes the story also have two paragrafs that's basically posted twice in the same chapter...its weird.

Lols I have to agree, I read my fic while its in the edit box before posting and then after I post it I read it again and just because I am a dawmed paranoid person I tend to read it the day after as well.

Its not paranoid. I do the exact same thing and spelling mistakes or spellcheck mistakes STILL get through.

Ah its refreshing knowing I am not the only one doing that then, yes spelling mistakes always creeps on you unexpectedly. The ninja's of letters and words >~> though I mostly have problems with my coma's and full stops more then my spelling u.u
