So the school she had been enrolled in was strict as hell…at least it did have the upside of letting her be somewhere that wasn’t at home under the judgmental eyes of her parents all the time. The classes were hard…but it was almost fun. Almost. At least the uniforms were cute…not quite as cute as the one the St. Mags girls got to wear…but her mother would have just died if she had ever gone to St. Mags. That was for sure.

No, she was supposed to go to HITS, that was ‘the plan’ from the moment that stupid nerd school had opened her father had done nothing but praise it…so thank goodness when she had brought home the flyer about Romano’s on her last day at Knightside her mother and father had both jumped at the idea. It seemed like such a great school, and she would be a part of the first class who had gone all four years. Like that was some…honor or something.

Marquette shook her head in disgust, clutching the smoothie she had bought tightly in her fist.

Oh well. Things could be worse. That was the best advice she could tell herself, and she did tell herself that, day after day.

So far though, nothing was ever worse. Or maybe everything was just bad. Or maybe she was an over dramatic teenager who needed some structure. Or maybe she was just crazy. Or it was a combo of everything.

Whatever the case, she wanted things to change.

Damian wasn't an Infiltration officer, but he was still well aware of the school that branch had set up - and he knew enough to be able to recognize one of the uniforms. He'd considered getting a job there, if only to have steady employment - and of course to contribute to the Advancement of the Glorious Mission of the Negaverse yadda yadda.

But the kids that went to Romano's were supposed to be special, weren't they? Possible candidates for officers?

Perhaps he would suss this one out, and if she seemed like a good pick, he'd get ahead of the game and corrupt her here.

So he walked over, a polite smile on his face.

"So, starting up at that new school?"

Marquette gave a little jump at the voice, blinking and looking up at the long haired bespectacled stranger who was talking to her. Why was some older guy talking to her. That uh. Well.

There were precious few things that could be going on here…none of which Marquette really liked, and alarm bells were going off in her head. Was she about to get kidnapped? About to get shipped off overseas or something? There were always specials about how active and awful human trafficking was…was that about to happen? Her hand slid down to the pouch that hung from her belt loop, a can of pepper spray that her mother had made her swear that she would always take with her…and…well, maybe that wasn’t such a bad piece of advice.

“Um. Yeah. I started there back in June. Why? Are you uh. A teacher or something?”

She didn’t let her eyes fall from him and slowly she slid her finger under the flap, trying to pretend that the little strip of Velcro hadn’t just made a noise when she opened it.

Who ever thought making Velcro so loud was a good thing?

Damian shrugged his shoulders. He knew he looked untrustworthy, approaching a teenager, but honestly it would probably have been a lot worse if he was powered up - shirtless, armed, much more obviously threatening.

So instead he gave her what he hoped was a disarmingly charming smile, praying that he looked vaguely young enough to pass for less of a threat.

Probably not, honestly, but he was committed now.

"Yeah, I teach," he shrugged. A lie, but she might not necessarily know that, and besides, he'd been planning on applying, so it wouldn't be a lie forever.

“Uh huh. How come I haven’t seen you around the campus then? What do you teach? They gave you a job? I’m surprised. I thought the school was supposed to hire professionals. Not…well.”

Once she had hold of the small pepper spray container, Marquette folded her arms across her chest and looked Damian up and down. “Not ruffians like you. I suppose.”

She tried to be cool about it, doing her best to hide the canister that was in her hand while still juggling the smoothie that was in the other, but she was quite sure he had seen it, or heard the Velcro or just. Well. She made a mistake being out here alone. And it might prove to be a very stupid mistake indeed. “All of my teachers are quite well dressed and quite I don’t know…worldly. Not creeps who skulk after teenagers. What do you want, anyway? Just to talk to a poor, lonely girl who’s out in the big city all on her own? Get lost, creep a**.”

It was amazing how much braver she felt with the spray in her hand.

"I hired on recently," Damian lied smoothly, "so I haven't spent much time on campus just yet." Keep going, commit, but don't let the lie get so big it gets away from you. The point was to evaluate, and so far, he liked this kid - clever, quick, not willing to take any of his bullshit.

Exactly the sort of person he would like to have in the Negaverse.

"But really? Ruffian? I think I might be hurt." He raised an eyebrow.

Yes. He liked her. He liked her cleverness, her sharp wit - even that she had gone for Mace, because not everyone would have had the wits to do that. Yes, this was exactly who he wanted to bring into the Negaverse.

"Actually, I wanted to make you an offer." In a flicker, Damian Howe transformed into General Ashanite, weight leaned casually on his staff. "I'm part of a very...unique organization. And we're recruiting." He was ready for her to spray - his transformation from civilian clothes to uniform did sort of involve losing a shirt, which wasn't exactly helping him look less creepy, and he knew that - but teleporting out of the way would be no trouble, he was sure. As if a can of Mace could take down a Negaverse General.

“Well, deal with it because I—“ Her voice cut off as not only did he seem to be trying to pull her into some…cult…but he changed. Literally he was there in front of her one second, and the next…it was a different person…but still the same person? What was going on? A unique organization…they were recruiting…?

Her parents would have three fits and a cow…

Well that made this almost worth it.

Marquette forced herself to breathe again, and tried to make sure her sass hadn’t deflated any. It would do no good to lose her sass now, when she needed it the most. “Oh yeah? Well. What kind of organization are you trying to sell me on, hm? Give me details and maybe I’ll sign up. Maybe. Either that or maybe I’ll give you a face full of pepper spray. Though I might just do that anyway.” She crossed her arms in front of her chest, keeping the can visible.

“So…talk.”

Ashanite suppressed the urge to laugh. God, had he been half this much a s**t at her age? (He could never be sure. Alas.)

"I'm sure you've heard news stories about terrorists or a gang war in this city?" Ashanite said. Most people had, if they paid attention. "Perhaps rumors of something else?" That was more of a gamble, but people saw things, and they talked about the things they saw. Not every powered battle happened in complete seclusion.

"I'd say the organization I work for is one of those gangs, but...that would be a vast oversimplification. The long and short of it is that magic is real, and I can give you a little taste of it, but you'll be signing up with a...pseudo-military, of sorts. You'll get to see exactly what is going on in this city, and perhaps best of all you'll be pointed at an enemy and allowed to fight. Use that pepper spray on someone who isn't offering you a golden opportunity."

Magic? Pseudo-military? It sounded…interesting. Very interesting…and wasn’t she at a military school? Didn’t her family sort of want her to be strict and disciplined? Wasn’t that the point of everything...?

And there were strange things that went on in the city…here was living proof of that.

And…magic.

She took a moment, still giving Ashanite the stink eye, but slowly made a show of stowing her pepper spray once again. “Fine. I want in. I want to see what’s going on and I want this…golden opportunity that you speak of. What do I have to do?” It sounded dangerous…and it sounded kind of stupid. But…she was a teenager. Wasn’t that what she was supposed to be doing? Stupidly dangerous things? Things that could get her into trouble?

Life was about trying new things…and she was ready to try. A golden opportunity, indeed.

The General let himself smile broadly, finally. "You've made the right decision," he said. "All you have to do is stay still, while I power you up. It's going to hurt, but a little pain isn't the worst trade in the world for magical powers, right?" He offered.

He wished he could make it gentler - and he supposed that it would hurt less for her than it had for him, coming over from the other side.

"You'll get a new identity, a new alias, and some sort of weapon. When you start out, it will suck. I am sorry about that. But eventually..." He called his own weapon to his hand, the bladed staff a foot taller than he was, razor edges catching the light. "You'll have something like this. So it is worth the initial struggle."

Before she could change her mind, he stepped a little closer, slipped his hand into her chest, and wrapped his fingers around her starseed. He pressed Chaos in, letting it flow through him and into her, a process that felt much more natural and easier this time than the first. Probably because he wasn't doing it in a panicked rush.

Marquette was going to say something, maybe it was going to be snarky about it hurting, or maybe it was going to be something a little frightened about the weapon that just appeared in his hand like that…or, maybe it was going to be something bitchy because he was going right for her boobs…he was a creep after all!

She made no words though, as his hand slid inside of her chest. Inside of her. That wasn’t possible.

But it was possible…and there was pain. A lot of it…much more then there should have been. Much, much more. She was almost going to try and pull away when something was added to the pain.

Power.

It felt…wonderful. Terrible and wonderful at the same time…and before she could for any other coherent thought, Marquette was no longer standing there.

Marquette would never be the same…now she was someone else as well. Someone more than Marquette could have ever been on her own.
Now she was someone…special.

Ashanite withdrew his hand, regarding his new recruit with some interest. So many greens; fascinating.

"Welcome to the Negaverse, Lieutenant Wavellite," he said, and he leaned a little more heavily on his weapon. Doing this was tiring; worthwhile but tiring. He wouldn't be dropping on his feet any time soon, but he certainly couldn't manage another corruption now. "Consider that your fancy new superhero alias Or supervillain, however you prefer to look at it." He gave a little bow, and mentally patted himself on the back for managing it without falling over.

"Call me General Ashanite. I'm your superior officer, which doesn't mean much more than if I order you to do something, I expect it to be done - but I doubt that will happen much, I don't actually enjoy giving orders." He considered, briefly.

"So, short primer, as best I can manage - you are now a member of the organization known as the Negaverse. We're all caught up in a very old war that barely has a beginning; there's a lovely romantic comedy about a moon princess and her prince, who was engaged to be married to another woman but fled to pursue true love, because he was something of an irresponsible p***k, but that barely matters." He huffed. "Our enemies call themselves Senshi and Knights. Some people will tell you they're from other planets; that's rubbish, I was a Knight once, and I'm from London, not Saturn. Really, dear, the most important thing is that we are the side that is going to win, because we are far stronger and far greater. It is your job and mine to ensure that the inevitable victory of the Negaverse comes to pass as quickly as possible."

He stopped, there.

"It's a lot to take in, I know. I remember being lost as all hell when I first Awakened."

“Super villain…so we’re the bad guys in this…this war?” She looked down at her new outfit and nodded, reaching up to touch her new puffy hat. Cool. Puffy hats were cool. She wasn’t sure that she was one hundred percent comfortable with being…a super villain…but on the other hand, it sounded pretty cool…and the villains won sometimes, didn’t they? Couldn’t they?

“…Wait, what did you call me? Lieutenant Wavellite? My name’s Marquette…unless that’s my—oh. Yeah. Duh. You literally just said that.” The new lieutenant was still admiring her new outfit before she paused. “Wait…so you expect me to listen to you? And…not to be rude…” Well. She was a teenager, it was her right to be rude, honestly. She was expected to be.

“But what right do you have to give me orders anyway? I see no reason to have to obey you at all. I mean, what makes you so special?” She folded her arms, giving a very judgmental look.

"We wear black, have deadly weapons, and can pull people's souls out of their chests," Ashanite said dryly. "I don't necessarily think anyone in this mess of a war is a good guy, but if it is anyone, I'm going to take a wild guess and say it probably isn't us. That said, villains have more fun anyway." He gave her a slightly theatrical wink.

"As to why you should obey me," he said, "I have a year's experience in this war on you, and I didn't get the fancy General rank by doing nothing." He'd earned his rank with blood and fierce fighting, and damn it he was proud of that. "But you are, theoretically, welcome to tell me to shove my orders somewhere unpleasant and improbable, if that's how you want to do things."

Her eyebrow went up at once and a slow grin began to spread across her face. They could...pull people’s souls out of their chests? That was...well. That sounded very, very interesting. “I guess you’ll have to show me that little trick sometime, oh wise and powerful General who I must obey.”

It didn’t seem so impressive, not really...if he had a years experience? It was one year. Plus, she was what, half his age? Clearly she would advance twice, if not three times as quickly as he did. “I think, that one day I’ll be at least four times as fancy as you are. In fact, I promise it. One day you’ll be taking the orders from me. That is, once you teach me how to do the soul snatching thing, because that really sounds badass as hell.”

Wavellite was excited, there was no other way to describe what she was feeling. She wanted to get her hands dirty, and she wanted to rebel as best she could...and this seemed like the perfect way to do both. Eat it, parents. Just eat it.
