Tree limbs rustled in the breeze, some of them shedding dried brown leaves. Fall was suddenly upon the lands, with the last days of summer quickly dwindling into nothingness. While most of the leaves on the trees remained green, some had begun to grow yellow and red with the chilly nights, and the air had a distinct smell to it that always accompanied the changing of seasons.
Qiyam was busy collecting everything he could from his plants before they died in a frost. He went along hurriedly, a raccoon by his side taking his hushed instructions. Everything would be dried later in the sun, then bottled for his collection of herbs and flowers. After all, the spirits didn't take a break just because it was cold out. He fretted over the plants, deliberating which were ready and which were not. The unicorn was rather engrossed in his task, and the bustle about him went completely unnoticed.

It had been a few months since her joining of the Kateri herd. She had traveled far from the lands she had been raised in, in hopes of finally finding the elusive herd that had formed from the offspring of her parent's previous herd. Her parents and ancestors had hailed from a herd that had shunned and frowned upon those of mixed blood and unnatural color, believing white unicorns to be the purest and the only ones worth any ounce of respect. Lona had hoped to experience a world without such clouded judgement and she hoped she had found it within the Kateri.
Though her time with the herd was brief, she had watched and shadowed many of those who held position within the herd. While she had avoided any involvement with those who fought and were more inclined towards violent, dangerous work, she had done her best to search and find her spot among the herd. While she was content to simply live among the other members, she felt she had more to offer and be of more use in a practical area. Today was certainly going to be the day she found a spot for herself, at least that was what she hoped.
With the coming fall, many were preparing for the cooler weather and saving what resources they could before the coming frosts depleted what was left from the growing season. The white unicorn carefully tread along, finding herself not far away from Qiyam, the only Throne of the herd. It was an odd title, not one that she was used to rolling over her tongue, but he had one and she had hoped to learn from him to see if she, too, could become a Throne.
"Excuse me."
She was met with silence. Lona was never particularly loud, she had been told many a time that her voice was easy to miss if no one thought to listen for it. It was gentle, soothing, and often times those qualities made it difficult for others to notice when they were focused on some other matter or task. With a quiet sigh and a quizzical tilt of her head as she watched the stallion and his companion work, Lona mustered up what she could in hopes of being heard.
"Excuse me," the cream colored mare began once more, "Qiyam, do you need any help? I was hoping I might be able to be of some assistance." She offered the male a kind smile, bowing her head in recognition of someone who certainly had more influence than herself. "Do you mind if I do? I don't want to intrude on your work. I was hoping I might be able to learn more about what you do for the herd and what it involves." She lifted her head, offering him a steady, gentle gaze.

Qiyam continued down the row in the garden he'd claimed as his own, commanding the raccoon to describe the texture of leaves on some of the plants and sniffing others. He'd give a silent nod or shake of the head, and move to the next one. While he saw the coon looking at something behind him, he paid it no mind, certain that his brothers or some of the vagabonds they'd taken in were fighting or doing something more interesting than staring at plants. While he knew it wasn't the most exciting of jobs, he enjoyed it and it needed to be done.
The sudden voice behind him made him flinch a little, but he turned slowly and deliberately as the mare continued talking. He smiled awkwardly upon realizing who it was, his jaw clenched. The unicorn listened intently to the voice and tried his best not to sigh. Did he really want another ward? Then again, he had sent his other one off quite a while ago and she'd not yet come back. His smile faded as he forgot it was there, and he thought about the request some more. Finally, sighing, he nodded. "All right. But I'll be blunt with you. If you become a hindrance, I'll not be able to teach you anymore." He looked at the little raccoon and sighed. Oh, how he hated having so much company. "Come look at these plants. Do you know what they are?"

Lona gazed at Qiyam and nodded her head. She completely understood his stipulation. The mare didn't wish to be any trouble to Qiyam or a burden on his shoulders. "Yes, I understand." She tread carefully to the small garden plot that Qiyam was tending to, her hooves stopping just at the edges of the dirt bed. Her pale eyes scanned the plants in question and her brows furrowed as she tried to think of what, exactly, she was looking at.
With a steady gaze, she ducked her head down to carefully breathe in the many different scents that the plants offered her. Some she recognized as sage and rosemary, others left her unsure and Lona lifted her head and considered her response carefully. "They're herbs, right? I know some of them are rosemary and sage in this garden bed, but I don't recognize most of the others."
