So...We know the captcha is a common matter of discussion, but mostly bc of how hard they are and stuff, but now, have you guys ever wondered where the avatars come from? Every now and then I have, mostly when I can recognize someone's signature look or if the avatar is wearing brand new items, the thing is that I was pretty much convinced the avatars came from users, meaning that they had wore them at some point. But it did occur me that they could come from people's saved outfit, but that'd be awful, right? Bad news, my sister has just gotten a dream avi of her (saved on her outfits, ofc) as a captcha, she already adressed the matter in the pre-AtS, suggesting to use people's favorites instead (pretty much I was the one that suggested that to my sis tho) so...
-How do you feel about having a saved outfit of yours showcased randomly in LK?
-Do you think the staff should change where the avis come from, or just change the captcha altogether?
-Do you think it's a good idea to use favorites instead?

Oh yes, I have heard that the avatars for the captcha come from users' saved outfits... absolutely horrid imo... especially when people save those outfits for personal use and never intended for those outfits to become public (or at least not until they were ready to show them to everyone). There isn't even any kind of warning when we save our outfits that they may be used by Gaia for their own purposes.

I can appreciate the current captcha that Gaia came up with. It's innovative, unique to Gaia, and good for marketing items to users. But for newer players who are NOT AT ALL familiar with the items on Gaia, the current captcha can be very difficult for them, especially since after 3 failed attempts, the player gets temporarily banned from the game (again, without warning or telling us how long the ban is, I believe). But I like that the current captcha reuses existing resources, so maybe it doesn't need to be changed altogether, but I would make these 2 suggestions:

1- Instead of showing the default image for each of the items that we can choose from, show the actual pose of the item(s) that the avatar is using. At least, that should make the captcha easier for newer players.

2- Instead of using avatars from users' saved outfits, use avatars featured in official Gaia sales announcements. I'm sure someone at Gaia HQ had to put those outfits together, and they don't always just use multiple poses of the same item, so Gaia, why don't you use your own avatars instead of ours? lol

I like the idea of using favorites, that's already one step better than using users' saved outfits, because favorites are outfits that users have already worn for everyone to see. But to me, and probably to other users who also prefer to keep their equipped list completely private, using favorites for the captcha would still expose things that I may not want to expose. So for me, I would still prefer that Gaia uses its own avatars, showcased in their many, many, MANY sales announcements.

You have really good points, I hadn't taken Gaia made avatars into consideration, I'm sure they have a lot of those saved. I know the problem with having your items showcased but the good thing about the captcha is that it only shows about 3-5 items the avatar is using, right? Still, it'd be better if they'd also put the username under the avatar, so at least people know it belongs to someone gonk

Yea, 3-5 items is better than the whole outfit, but zero items is even better xd I know, I know, I'm being way too idealistic lol
And hm, I'm not sure I follow on adding the usernames. What are the benefits of people knowing who those avatars belong to?

I'm sure there's people that think these avatars don't belong to anyone, and there're also the people that would steal the avatars and consider it a "victim-less crime" since they don't know who they're stealing from. Also, if you see a nice avatar you could either go compliment the user or even add the avatar as a favorite~
It's ok to be idealistic from time to time, I tend to be really pessimist most of the time rofl

How do you feel about having a saved outfit of yours showcased randomly in LK?
Eh. It doesn't bother me. Although it's more difficult now than when we had fewer items, I figure anyone can re-create anyone else's look with a little time and effort. Is it right? No. But is it going to happen? Yeah. Most of the outfits that I have saved in my "closet" are old, poorly designed ones anyway. rofl My more recent and, I think, better ones are all saved in a Word document.

Do you think the staff should change where the avis come from, or just change the captcha altogether?
Honestly? I'd want them to change the captcha. I appreciate its purpose, I really do... but I don't have an eidetic memory. It's silly to expect everyone to know every single item on Gaia when there are thousands and thousands of them. If it's challenging for me, and I've been here for 10+ years, it has to be even worse for new players. Sure there are little things that tend to be good indicators of a correct item (agape scissors, color schemes, etc.) but those don't always help. This one also seems to make newer players think that they'll get whatever item they choose as a reward and it makes thing confusing. Something else might be a little more approachable.

Do you think it's a good idea to use favorites instead?
I'd be okay with that. Alternatively, an "opt out" option might be a good idea. Probably a little more difficult to code but, still, it would be a solution. If we can opt out of having our avatars favorited, I don't see why we can't opt out of having our avatars used as captchas.

Ooh, I really like the idea of being able to add captcha avatars as favorites! I've actually seen some really awesome avatars in there before.
*sends some positive vibes your way*

I really like this "opt out" option as well, because I think some people actually want their avatars to be used as captchas, so this solution could satisfy a lot of different people. 3nodding

I also thought of another possibility for the LK captcha. Instead of using avatars, why don't they use something more LK-related? For example, the captcha could ask the player to identify the kin that is shown, and give the player a bunch of kin eggs to choose from.

An opt out option would be great! I understand not everyone will dislike having their saved outfits displayed, since lots of people use and re-use their saved outfits so they've already been seen by some people. Others would feel like they're either easy to replicate and/or not unique enough for other people to even need to copy them to have a similar avatar~

That's a great idea! Not everyone that plays LK knows much about items and some may not even have much interest either way, but if you play the game you can use the information about it 3nodding

Completely missed AtS bc I had to bake something for my little brother's geography presentation but luckily they did answer my sis' question!~
Quote:
Sure we can move them to favorites. We used to consider that outfits are avatars that are being shown to public, but having outfits that were never equipped does make sense.

When this change will take place is unknown tho, and it'll be extremely hard to tell unless they actually tell us when they change it sweatdrop
