Date night was something Evan was getting used to again—and something he kept telling himself and Cambria and Zac that he was absolutely fine with. He didn’t want to be a burden on their relationship and, realistically, he did actually want them to be able to go out and have fun together.

Tonight, they were in a movie—one that was too scary for Evan, even though they had invited him along. He was used to being the third wheel on their dates, and so far no one had complained. But, tonight was for them.

Evan was home alone with his recipes and his movies and his safety, and he planned to stay at home.

Until he heard someone scream in the distance.

At first, he thought it was some commercial, some ad on the computer, some kids playing outside…

It wasn’t.

He heard another scream and tried to justify that it was obviously some Halloween prank, except…

What if it wasn’t?

If it wasn’t, it meant someone was out there and needed help and no one was going to help, because he was sure he still heard screaming, and…

Evan wasn’t a hero, he knew that much about himself. But he wasn’t someone who could stand by and let someone else get hurt if he could do something about it.

Tonight, at least.

Suffocating all his fear and worry, he unlocked the front door and ran out of the house—not too far, because he didn’t want to wind up in trouble without being powered out, but he wasn’t foolish enough to power up at home.

The moment he became Sailor Malus, he could tell there was at least one energy signature nearby—and it made his blood run cold.

A Negaverse Agent, of course. If the scream had come from anywhere, it was probably from somewhere around her.

Malus took comfort in the fact that she was at least the same rank as he was, so maybe he stood a chance. His mouth was dry and his heart was pounding, but he tried not to look as weak as he felt as he tried to find her—and stop her, if she was up to no good.

It had been simple. Too simple, honestly. Pose as a helpless child to these creepy drunk men, scream to make them think they were in control of the situation, then power up before they knew what was even going on…it had been so easy and now here she was with two sparkling starseeds in her hand, a bright smile on her face.

Wavellite didn’t even really realize that there was a senshi coming until he was already there. At once she slipped the glittering objects into her subspace hold and grinned, spreading her arms wide. “Welcome, welcome senshi. Did you come to play too? I think my General would be very pleased if I were to bring him three starseeds tonight and not just too…not that he’ll be turning his nose up at two, but…I digress…what can I help you with?”

Reaching up, the lieutenant adjusted the hat she wore and her grin grew larger as she took in the purple clad senshi…he looked like a pushover…she could take him. She hoped that she could, at least. Sure she only had a paper boat to work with…but she was scrappy. A trait that she had honed in the months since she had been corrupted…and honestly she liked it.

“You’re too late to save them. Was that your goal? Oopsie.”

Malus swallowed the lump in his throat. A quick analysis told him that she was right—he was too late. He’d seen the starseeds vanish before him, and he didn’t think he had anything in his arsenal that could force her to summon them back. Fear and desperation began to churn in his stomach; it felt like he’d somehow swallowed a ball of a frigid, churning spikes.

He shouldn’t have come out.

There was nothing he could do to help these people, nothing he could do to stop her. She could pull out his starseed and there wasn’t anything he could do about it.

There probably wasn’t even any point in pretending like he was strong enough to fight this, but he did anyway. Malus drew in a breath and tried to stand a little taller. His brows remained knit and his hands were clenched at his side but he was trying his hardest to look brave

“I’m not here to play, and I’m not here to give you my starseed. And I really hope you’ll reconsider what you’ve done with the other starseeds. No matter what your goal is, it’s not worth someone’s life. Bring the starseeds back, and put them where they belong.” He added an extremely earnest, “Please,” afterwards.

“They were two creepy drunks who were trying to prey on a poor, innocent, teenager. They deserve to have their souls ripped out and used for a better purpose. They’re going to hell anyway.”

Her hands curled into fists as she watched the senshi try to look braver, more sure of himself…it was adorable…he was older than she was, sure…but she could see that he didn’t have much of a backbone, or at least he didn’t act like it. “Now, I’m not giving the starseeds back, and I’ll give you one chance to leave, just the one, and if you don’t leave within the next ten seconds, I’ll rip yours out too, because clearly you’re nothing more than a creep who wants to terrorize a teenage girl as well. For shame.”

She drew in a breath and began crouching, eyeing where she would strike first. “One.”

Twisting her head, she cracked her neck, “Two.” And then the other side. “…Three”

Bright seafoam eyes were locked on the purple senshi as she continued counting, not noticing the smaller order signature coming up from behind her, not noticing until she was hit in the back by something and it hurt.
Letting out a cry, Wavellite stumbled and fell, hands now clutching at what she could feel of her back, sure that she had been shot with something

A large brown cat lumbered over towards Malus, a hot pink hat perched on top of her head. “You looked as though you could use a little help over here…I do hope that I’m not intruding in any way…if you’d like a little boost…could I see your henshin pen for a minute?”

He was ready to be stronger, she could sense the power almost overflowing from him and it was lucky she was there to help it reform into something better. Something stronger.

Something new.

Malus grimaced when she described her targets—and their supposed fate. When she said it like that, he couldn’t really sympathize for them; they sounded like the type of people that he was afraid to run into after the sun set.

But then, that didn’t sound like a very Senshi thing to think, and he wasn’t about to start sympathizing with a Negaverse Agent’s motives.

She was going to attack him. She was going to try to hurt him. She might even succeed, if he kept clamming up like this.

But she didn’t have the chance. At least, not yet; he vaguely processed that a cat had jumped out—stunned her?—and was talking to him.

Even now, he wasn’t sure what he was supposed to do with cats, so he looked dumbly at the Mauvian who had rushed to his rescue. He reached for his Henshin Pen as soon as she asked for it, not because he intended to give it to her but because his brain was working just enough to process what she was asking for. He opened his mouth as if he intended to say something, but all the cogs in his mind were jammed—and, apparently, that meant he lost the ability to hold things, as well.

The Henshin Pen partially flew out of his hand, dropping quickly towards the Mauvian on the ground. A wave of anxiety and fear flushed through Malus and he blurted, “Sorry!” He nearly knelt to pick it up, but he was more concerned with the Negaverse Agent. He didn’t know how long she was going to be out of the picture, and he didn’t know what the Mauvian was doing, but right now the cat seemed to be the lesser threat. “What did you do to her—is she okay?” he added, and then felt incredibly stupid for even asking.

The Negaverse was full of bad guys—she was proof of that, stealing people’s starseeds. Their lives.

He wasn’t sure he wanted to be involved in helping creepy drunkards get back on the street to wreak havoc, but he couldn’t just sit there and let them die if he could help it. He swallowed the lump in his throat and asked the Mauvian quickly, “She took two starseeds but she sent them away. What do I do?”

Julienne was busy with the pen, having caught it in her mouth as it tumbled towards her, and even now she was focusing to unlock the power that would bring this senshi to his next stage. “…You said that she had their starseeds and sent them away?” There was worry evident in her voice and she looked up at Malus shaking her head. “I don’t know of any way to get them back unless she chooses to get them out herself…that’s not something that we’ve ever been able to crack but…” She picked the pen back up in her mouth, and sat up, reaching towards the senshi. “Take it okay? And please say ‘Malus Asteroid Power, Make up.’”

She rubbed gently against one of his legs. “It will give you more power than she has, and we can really send her running…as for what I did…all Guardians can do it. It’s a concentration of power from our forehead stars…it’s very exhausting though, but I felt that it was needed. It’s not lethal or anything, she’ll be up sooner than we would like her to be, I’m sure.”

It was true, even now the lieutenant looked as though she was struggling to get back up, the shock from the blow wearing off. “Quickly, Sailor Malus, say what I have instructed, please.”

Malus really didn’t want to do anything without actually having time to think it over, but used to succumbing to peer pressure and buckling under the stress of battle, Malus repeated her phrase instinctively.

He should have known what to expect, but even when light surrounded him, covered him, he seemed surprised. His outfit shifted but, more than that, his power shifted—into something greater.

Super Sailor Malus didn’t entirely know what to make of the change; he held his henshin pen uncertainly, looked to Julienne, and then to lieutenant as she began to push herself up.

“I need to talk to you after this,” Malus said quietly, so only Julienne could hear. He hadn’t had the opportunity to talk to a Mauvian after awakening and while Lysithea had given him ample information, there were some things he still wasn’t certain about. “But I’ll take care of her so she doesn’t hurt you.”

He hoped.

The Mauvian seemed to think that there was nothing that could be done about the lost starseeds, and guilt already laced Malus’ heart and stomach but if there wasn’t anything he could do to politely get them back, there wasn’t anything he could do. He wasn’t a monster, he wasn’t prone to attacking other people. He couldn’t force her to give them back.

But, maybe he could get her to leave and stay away from this area. For tonight, at least.

He drew in a breath and stood taller. “Get out of here,” he said to the woman on the ground. “If you won’t give those starseeds back, then leave. And if I ever see you around here again, I won’t go easy on you. Do you understand?”

He didn’t want to hurt her, but he would. If it meant keeping himself safe—keeping others safe—he could do it.

Or, at least, he could try.

Julienne moved to stand next to Malus, rubbing her head against one of his legs. “Use your magic on her if she doesn’t leave…it should give us enough time to get away.” She paused, nuzzling again. “I would be happy to talk to you about anything, I’ll stay as long as you need me to.” As she watched the lieutenant rising back to her feet, she took a few steps behind Malus, staying close enough to still be there…but she knew that there was nothing more that she could do to help…especially after using her laser and unlocking his next stage of power…she was as weak as a kitten right now.

As Wavellite struggled to her feet, she paused, frowning slightly and looking up at the senshi, her eyebrows furrowing as she tried to fully comprehend what had just happened…she was hit with something, then there was a cat, and now he was…he was stronger…stronger and telling her to leave. Telling her that he wouldn’t go easy on her…what a…what a fool.

“Are you serious right now? Do you really think the fact that you’re stronger than me is going to scare me into running away like some frightened child?” Her hands balled into fists and she shook her head, moving towards him. “I’m going to make you regret those words. Even if you’re stronger, I’m sure that I can still kick your a** right to hell.” Or maybe it was a bluff, honestly, she wasn’t sure…but she didn’t want to seem weak in front of this stupid…’peace loving’ senshi, that was for sure.

Malus didn’t want to have to use his magic, he didn’t want to have to fight, but it didn’t seem like the lieutenant was really giving him many options here.

This wasn’t just about his own well being; this was about the Mauvian’s, too. And, even if he’d had one bad run in with one a few months ago, at the end of the day he couldn’t even resent being awakened because it had opened a hell of a lot of new doors for him and, even if he was reluctant to admit it, it had made him stronger. It might have put him in the way of danger, but at least he was better equipped to handle it.

Like, now.

“You didn’t have to run, you could have just politely walked away and no one had to ever mention this night again. But you’re really making a fuss about this, so,” he faltered, and then called the first few words that popped into his head: “Realm of Glass!”

He knew what his basic magic did, and he recognized similarities between it and this—but now wasn’t the time to examine and compare the magic; instead, as soon as he had finished casting, he scooped Julienne into his arms and bolted as far away as he could. He needed to get some distance between himself and the lieutenant so he could power down and he didn’t want to be in her crosshair when she got out of his illusion.

Orangeish Sherbert
Realm of Glass: Malus targets up to three opponents; each target becomes trapped in their own stained glass illusion. The world around them seems to transform into a vivid glass portrait. Players may determine if the illusion resembles the world around them or takes on new forms. Colors may seem to blend together and strange light may be disorienting. Attacking something will shatter its stained glass illusion, however the illusion will break into magical glass shards that may cause the sensation of slicing damage. The player can choose to retain physical damage after the magic ends. The magic lasts for thirty five seconds and can be used twice per battle.

There was a scream of rage and confusion from the lieutenant, and Julienne was just glad that she was no safe in the senshi’s arms. “You did good, Malus…thank you. Now, if you would like things answered, I am more than willing to give you whatever answers that I can as soon as we’re someplace warm…and perhaps after you feed me, I am quite hungry. And please…don’t just open a can of tuna and call it a day…not that I’d really mind but…I don’t really like canned tuna…or cat food to be honest…if you have some nice salmon with some dill and herbs…”

She let out a sigh, going rather limp in his arms as the thoughts of the delicacy raced through her tired head. “That would just be heaven.”

Nuzzling closer, Julienne let her eyes close and began to purr. “Thank you for saving me. It means a lot, Malus. You’re going to be a good friend. I can tell.”
