Flitting about, as if riding the waves like air currents, a sparkling silver-white butterfly found the slumbering Nebulosa beneath the surface. It fluttered over to the sleeping Anago, landing lightly on her forehead and vanishing into her dreaming mind...

===================

The moonlight overhead cast dancing reflections on the surface of the river below. The current was gentle, allowing one to settle in the shallow waters along the bank without much effort. Nebulosa would be easily comfortable in the shallows, with the center of the river being much deeper for easier swimming. It was a calm night from all appearances, yet tension hung in the air.

A few moments passed before a sound from the bank preceded the arrival of another. A young, lovely faun woman emerged from the foliage, glancing around furtively. At first glance, she seemed quite lovely, dressed in fine bangles and sashes with fancy ornate antlers, but with further study one would notice subtle lines around her eyes, a weariness and anxious energy about her. Clearly under some stress and likely not sleeping well in some time, she crept closer to the water, looking around for something. Or someone. Crouching by the water, she reached up to push her hair back behind a wilted, half-dried flower at her ear.

"I'm here," came a quiet voice from the water.

The faun woman sighed in obvious relief, some of the tension easing from her form. "Thank you."

"You requested my presence. May I now ask why?"

Looking unsure for a moment, the faun replied, "I...need some help. Some advice, I suppose. Guidance."

"Do you not have those in the Tree you can ask for help? Your own advisors and counsel? Is that not why you have a Seer on the Circle?"

"I can't ask them! Especially not the Seer! It's...complicated," she stammered, then closed her eyes in frustration. Her fists clenched briefly at her side. "...I haven't been back to the Tree in some time now."

Some movement cast ripples across the surface of the water as a Naiad woman with fancy fins emerged from the shadows to lean on a river stone with crossed arms, lower half of her body remaining in the flowing waters. She seemed to study the faun woman for a moment, then said, "...you have some issue with the Circle. Perhaps a certain, dear member of leadership..." The look of shock that flashed over the faun's face was enough to confirm her suspicions. She'd suspected certain things for a while now. "...and perhaps some issues that lie beneath the waters as well..."

The faun seemed to swallow nervously before giving a single nod of affirmation. A deep breath and anger seemed to push aside her anxiety. "I...I've known for some time. But...what can I do? Who could I turn to? I didn't know who to trust; I couldn't trust the Circle. I knew this was a risk too, but I...I just can't take it any more. I thought maybe, if I could reach out to someone on the Court instead, I..." she faltered, still seeming frustrated, but lost. She reached up, fist clutched over her heart. "I don't know what I expected. I just...can't take this anymore. It hurts...it's hurt so long, now I think I'm going numb. I'm just...furious and if only they knew how much pain they were causing me...if they could just feel a taste of it..." She dropped her head, a futile attempt to hide the angry tears building and trailing from her eyes.

For just a moment, when the faun turned away, there was something unsettling in the smile that crossed the Naiad's face. Then, she seemed sympathetic as she reached towards the other. "Perhaps, there's more I can do for you than you might have thought." The brief flash of hope in the Faun's face when she looked up in surprise sealed it. "Now, let's talk about what you can do for me..."

Nebulosa wondered briefly at the sudden shift in her surroundings and the vague feelings of tension, but, in the way of dreams, her mind reassured that this was real and there was some perfectly reasonable explanation that didn’t particularly matter at the moment. Unsettled but not afraid, she let herself drift, carried by the gentle current into a small eddy under an overhang covered with rich earth and topped with a tangle of vegetation. Screened by trailing creepers, she settled into the shallows and held herself steady on her elbows, her head lifted slightly above the waterline. Feeling sheltered there, she started to relax despite the charged and waiting tension to the atmosphere.

After what seemed a mere fraction of a second, a small sound from the far bank startled the anago from her reverie and she hunkered down further into her hiding spot, watching as a figure appeared from amidst the bushes and trees. Having never seen a Faun before, Nebulosa studied the strange female with more curiosity than concern, taking in the awkward-seeming appendages that held it upright on land and the elaborate accessories that put her in mind of the brightly-colored flamboyant fish of the reefs. Distracted by the outer layers, she eventually noticed the tightness around the other’s eyes and the anxiety that seemed to roll off of her in waves. Without realizing it, Neb leaned forward as if she meant to ask what was wrong, but at the sound of the voice she caught herself before she could leave the safety of the overhang. Here now was a species she recognized: the voice belonged to a naiad.

Unintentionally she eavesdropped on their conversation, growing more lost and confused by the moment. What or who was this Circle? A Seer? Problems with the leadership? Issues beneath the water? Great Waters, what were they talking about? She shouldn’t be listening to this; they were talking of things that didn’t concern her and she had no business hearing… The tension Nebulosa had felt before built even though the faun seemed more at ease, now that she was talking to the naiad. Angry, yes, but no longer anxious and furtive. The anago fidgeted, realizing that the tension was coming from within and not without, and started to look for an avenue of escape. If she could just slip away, she’d forget she’d seen or heard anything. Through her restlessness, she caught the smile that flickered across the naiad’s face and froze, going cold right down to the core of her being. I need to get away! she thought frantically, without really knowing why. Heart thudding in her chest, she bolted, darting from her cover to the center of the river and following the current to open water.

Time seemed to lose shape, going far too fast and far too slowly all at once. Had she gotten away? Had she been seen? Her wide paddle tail thrashed from side to side as she tried for more speed but it didn’t seem to be working. Without warning, as if the flow of the river had reversed itself, she began to lose ground instead of gaining it. The moonlight that had shone so prettily on the surface of the river just moments before blinked out, smothered by clouds. Then, not quite sure how she had gotten there, Nebulosa found herself looking at the naiad woman whose face held the same smile it had worn while the land dweller’s back was turned.

”What did you hear?”

“N-nothing!” she said quickly. Nothing that made any sense, anyway.

”Well now. That might be the truth… But it might also be a lie. And I can’t have anyone spreading rumors about something they may, or may not, have heard. Poor luck for you, dear.”

The snowflake anago suddenly understood why the naiad woman’s expression had frightened her so; it was the look of a predator much higher up on the food chain than herself. Her vision dimmed at the edges, narrowing until all she saw was gleaming eyes and that shark-toothed smile…

Nebulosa came awake with a gasp and a flurry of bubbles, propping herself up on one hand and using the other to push her tangled hair out of her face. She wasn't in a river being held captive by some crazed naiad; she was back in the comfortable little cave she had made her own just off the shores of Telrunya. “A dream,” she said aloud, somewhere between a statement and a question, while her heart continued to pound. She repeated it aloud a second time, trying to convince herself it was so.

It was a long time before Nebulosa closed her eyes again and went back to sleep.
