A glowing electric blue butterfly rests a moment on the window sill of a pae named Mona's room, waiting for her to fall asleep. When the faun closed her eyes, the butterfly landed on a branch of her antler and walked down to her sleeping head to enter her dreaming mind.
Mona slept soundly, cuddled up with her plushie of Chief Rais, as the toy brought comfort to her. Suddenly there was a jerk, then a brief pain in her gut before she started to slowly floated up from her bed, her plushie fell out of her arms. Panic set in. Unadulterated, irrational, and passionate panic. She reached for her Rais only to watch him fade away into darkness.
The fauness cried and felt cold. She rubbed her arms to warm up. All alone in an alien world. It looked like the island, but gray and blurry. The trees were dead but little critters still bound around. Mona felt eyes on her. They circled around, and she spun to try and find what it could be. It was this moment she noticed she was floating and her hooves were barely visible. She spent some time moving her hooves and trying to run or fly or swim, anything to find her footing and figure out how to move in this place she'd found herself in.
A crow - maybe it wasn't a crow, but it looked like one and it looked to be native to this dull world - flew straight for her. She tried to run or jump or swim, but couldn't move. Mona ducked, just in time for the crow to fly over her head, clipping a branch from her antler. A brittle, lifeless leaf fell down into her hand. A leaf from her antlers? She reached up to pluck another leaf and it was just as dead as the first. What the What!? How in the world did she end up in this land?
After a good cry, Mona sniffled a little and wiped her nose on the fur on the back of her arm. She noticed she wasn't in the same spot that she'd tried so vehemently to move from earlier. Earlier? How long ago was it?
She'd floated away as she emitted her intense emotions.
Mona heard a quiet jingle of bells far off. She tried to move towards it, but again, couldn't figure out how to move. She cried out for help, not a thought in the universe that the pleasant sound of jingle bells could be malevolent.
A small spec of light lit up in the direction of the bells. It lit the fearsome surroundings that Mona hadn't noticed before. She was in a terrifying forest full of gnarled old trees with creepy critters with red and purple eyes. She willed herself to move, but she just couldn't find to do it.
Mona felt heavy pressure from every direction and curled up as tight as she could. She closed her eyes just ready to let happen what was inevitably going to happen because she simply couldn't move or defend herself.
A light shone above her. The bells jingled softly, comforting her poor exhausted soul.
"Mona, let's go."
"I can't."
"You must. You can't stay in this place forever."
"I can't move."
"Have you tried?"
"Yes."
The soft, warm voice said her name again. "Mona."
The fauness lifted her head to see another faun gazing back. She was the most beautiful faun she'd ever laid eyes on. She lit up the drab surroundings and was the only bit of color in the dark. The faun had big beautiful asymmetrical antlers that lit up - and jingled. The woman held a long, heavy staff with a lantern dangling on the end. The light, even small, was incredibly uplifting and calming. Mona lifted her head and straightened up. She was close to standing but a little crooked.
The woman giggled and held out her hand.
Mona slowly reached out but recoiled the moment she touched the woman's hand. The feeling was electric, almost unreal and too intense.
"Come."
Mona once again slowly reached out. This time, the woman took Mona's hand in hers.
"You haven't much time, my dear. A moon as already passed."
"Time for what? What moon?"
Images of a moon tree danced in her mind. Glittering and shining in the moonlight surrounded by life and magic.
"Not that moon."
"What? How did you know I was thinking that?"
"Come. We must hurry."
The woman led Mona away. She could feel her hooves finally catching enough she could walk on her own. "How did you do that?"
"Do what?"
"Make me walk again?"
"I did nothing, you are the one walking."
Mona looked behind her and saw another light, glowing purple and moving towards them.
"Do not look back. We must hurry."
