The shining opalescent butterfly flit around the demon Quinn's head, taking rest on the sleeping pae's forehead. Slowly it disappeared into her dream world.
Siren's wailed in the background ...
Quinn woke up with a start, and the butterfly was pushed from her mind.
The pae had to get a drink of water before laying down to rest again. The butterfly came from hiding to try and lull the tired demon to sleep. The butterfly disappeared once more.
The siren's wailed again, but it was less jarring this time. A quick glance down the length of the tent and all she saw was broken and injured pae, laying on cots and moaning in agony. The demon felt their pain and did everything she could to shield herself from it. But it was hard.
"No! Make it stop!" Quinn woke up again, the emotion and agony still fresh in her mind. She curled over as if stabbed.
She tended to an injured young female, helping distribute some medicine to ease her pain. The soldier had lost her legs in a brutal attack. She was lucky to be alive because most of the soldiers in that area died. A sharp and cutting storm blast had hit hard. The Air pae attacks were deadly and The Chosen army had been instructed to steer away from them. But this poor girl, she was a part of a covert mission to infiltrate the Air's defenses.
"This will help." Quinn softly comforted the girl and offered a small cup of elixir.
Siren's wailed again.
A group of panicked medics were bringing in more bloodied and dismembered bodies.
Quinn held her head tight in her hands. The pain was excruciating.
The field nurse Quinn had volunteered to help in another area because the attacks were getting worse on the south side. More and more injured were coming in. They didn't have enough room or medics to tend to the wounded.
"The dragons! The fire! We couldn't run fast enough." A soldier cried out. His feathers had been burned off.
"They just plowed right through us, knocking us out of the sky!" Another cried out. He had so many broken bones Quinn didn't think he'd survive.
The ground trembled and everything was knocked to the floor and it was hard to keep steady. Quinn raced to see what was going on. She stopped and gasp, covering her mouth. The earth beast's tree had just ... come out of the ground. It rose high in the sky and the air squadrons tried to fly up to attack, but arrows and even the hand grenades did nothing to top the tree.
In its wake was a giant pit. It was filled with writhing roots, mud and water. The Earth beasts started tossing angels and demons in, and the roots strangled and dismembered them. Even a few of the beasts' own fell in.
Quinn cried out again, pleading for the pain to stop. She needed sleep and the pain wouldn't go away.
She sat up to meditate but hunched over as she fell back asleep in the middle of her breathing exercises.
A troop of the bugs ripped the tent apart. The bugs were thin and light, with flittery wings like a dragonfly. The Miakis were terrifying because of the destructive nature of their power. The generals of The Chosen had instructed the army to attack and eliminate them as fast as they could.
The enemy was strong. But so were The Chosen.
One of the bugs picked Quinn up from under her arms. It was evident the bugs weren't physically strong. Quinn's eyes met the enemy and silently begged for mercy.
"You are a healer. You are the targets."
"Please! I am no threat to you!"
"No, you are a healer. You are the targets."
The bug had an awful accent and seemed to speak as if reciting a memorized line or two.
Fear clouded Quinn's mind when the bug flew into the Spire. The sheer size and expanse was overwhelming. The land wasn't even this big! How could it be this big on the inside? More bugs were moving about, coming and going.
Quinn was just dropped in mid-air, in the middle of the hive. She screamed, expecting to fall, but she didn't.
A bigger bug, regal and confident flew up to stare Quinn in the eye. "You are healer. You are best healer. We need your help." Templa said to the demon in that awful accent.
"No!!" Quinn shouted at her.
"Yes!" Templa said as a swirling black ball materialized in her palm.
