Gev was wandering. He had no clear direction. He usually had a plan. Usually had some sense of where to go for the night. What part of the city he wanted to clear out and map out in his head. He didn't have that. Personally, he hated people who had no set purpose when they powered up and went out because they were risking their life for no reason. Even worse, he wasn't as focused, which again, he would have lectured was a death sentence.

He focused a lot on the possible outcome of death, but he had seen it so often. It was a everyday reality for him. He escaped it many times.

But it was hard to keep his mind where he needed it to be because so much was uncertain these days. So much was broken and crumbling these days. So much of himself, of which he had been certain about, wasn't as solid. He felt ethereal. Floating but still grounded to the world through a torrent of emotions he was too tired to want to do anything about.

So, like a zombie, he wandered the streets because he felt comfort in being Gevaudan. He felt comfort in being powered and powerful. He had memories of this person. He had some expectations on him as Gev. At least that was something, and right now, he'd take what he could get.

He felt the signature of another member of order passing by and he continued to walk, knowing their paths would cross. The least he could do was check in.

Patrols were still touch and go for Eurydike. It was better now that he was eternal, at least. There was something to be said for knowing he was technically a lot less likely to face a situation where he was ridiculously outclassed, but that didn't mean the feeling had left him. The memory of that general and how powerless he'd been to stop her was too fresh still in his mind, punctuated by the the fabric that now at least thankfully covered his eye. Interesting how the sailor suit or whatever the ******** it was called had adapted to suit his needs. Probably the one damn thing it was good for.

Stop it. Try an' be more positive man.

What the ******** is there to be positive about? You haven't had any damn luck, and that was true; unlike before, trying his best to just support whoever he came across, there were more reasons to come out here now than there'd been before. Especially - he hadn't seen that youma again yet, not since that night. But she had to be out there somewhere, and Eurydike knew he had to find her.

He just didn't know what the ******** he'd do when he did.

Needless to say, all this made it a hell of a relief when it was an order signature, not chaos, that came at him. Eurydike stopped moving, instead lingering at a corner as whoever it was drew near. He idly fidgeted with the fabric over his bad eye, something that was rapidly becoming a habit, and took the chance to light up a cigarette while he waited.

Before, cigarettes had bothered him and to an extent, they still did. However, spending more and more time with Faustite, the smell of smoke and ash started to become familiar if not strangely comforting. True, the half-youma wasn't a cuddly warm hug of a person, but he was blunt, honest as far as Gev could tell, and had the energy signature of a place deeply rooted in him as home.

Still, cigarettes had that chemical scent to it that the half-youma did not, and he watched at the other lit up for at the night.

"Evening." He said, walking over and staring at the cigarette but deciding not to comment. "You stressed or just addicted?"

Okay, maybe he had to comment.

His eye did naturally move to the man's face, and most notably, his missing eye. A sharp twist struck him inside. The easily struck empathy of someone who shared the same handicap.

This guy wasn't tall. Ironically, that's the first thing Eurydike noticed, and you'd think it would have been the eye. But the fact of the matter was a lot of these powered ******** were damn tall, especially the men, and it was kind of a relief to come across someone who didn't tower over him for once - at least not without heels involved. (Funny how his outfit was willing to compensate for the whole missing eye thing and not the short thing. Whatever.)

"You say it like it's gotta be one or the other, " he retorted with a low laugh, his voice gruff and deep as ever, but for all the words rolling into each other with the natural drawl of a proud New Yorker, it carried - and there was an innate warmth carried within it too, an organic thing he would've denied if anyone pointed it out to him.

Then, he took a closer look and the realization hit him like ice - and immediately, a flood of questions and feelings he couldn't begin to put words to choked him, and he took a harder drag of his cigarette, fidgeting with the patch again as his face burned.

"Uh, so, " instead of addressing the obvious, he went with this, "I'm Eurydike, by the way. An' you?"

"I guess it could be." He said, agreeing that addicted and stress could be combined to make someone go after a chemical release such as a cigarettes. He knew at least enough times where he wanted a drink after something serious had happened or when he had been killing criminals with Castor.

His attention snapped back to the eyepatch, or moreso, the hand fiddling with it. Haunches up, he tenses as he saw hands that had just touched a cigarette messing so close to a injured or even missing eye, and he felt the burning demand to scold like so many nuns, elementary teachers, and old-world nubs well up in him.

"Gevaudan." He said, having long since stopped adding 'knight of Ganymeade' to his introductions. He wasn't owned by the princesses after all.

As the man continued to fiddle, he reached out and grabbed his wrist. "S-Stop. You... you need to stop that. You're driving me nuts." He said, not one to usually touch anyone but having to stop the man as quickly as he could else he was going to start shouting him. That or give him a firm slap to the back of his head.

Tentatively, he released his wrist. "If that's a habit of yours, you need to stop it. It's not good for you."

"Gevaudan, " Eurydike repeated carefully, his typical way of committing s**t to memory. Hadn't forgotten a name yet. He tried to ignore the way the knight was staring at him, or specifically, his eye, because he was trying not to make it weird, but -

He stiffened when the other man grabbed his wrist, although it shouldn't have been a surprise - even without knowing Logan Hitchcock's history, Eurydike was sporting enough scars to write a goddamn book about. The tension ebbed quickly though, and his cheeks burned. He toyed with the cigarette between his lips, mumbling out a low apology. (Although did it really need an apology? - you were annoyin' him though.)

Then, he kind of made an attempt at a smile, although it was kind of shallow. "Y'mean with the fidgetin' or the smokin'? Heh." Eurydike kind of shook his head. Stupid joke. Idiot. "Sorry, yeah, it's - still feels like if I take it off, it'll be - it's kinda new. Like, it's healin' an' all. Just not used to this bein' like - there any way to talk about it that ain't awkward as s**t?"

It was new. Very new if it was still healing. The tension in him slowly dropped away to a old aching. The old thoughts of longing that there would be a magical cure. That somewhere among monsters and magic beams, there was a healing rare to render him with perfect vision. Despite forgetting his memories of Ladon, he remembered the night it happened. He remembered the training after to just jump on roofs correctly without missing and attempting to toss his weapon and missing over and over and over when he once used used to have perfect aim.

Sorry, yeah, it's - still feels like if I take it off, it'll be

He felt his insides twist at the trailing off statement.

"Like it will come back." He finished.

"If it's fresh, then there is no real easy way to talk about it. It's a s**t thing to happen. I still remember when I lost mine. It's going to take time for it to even feel remotely okay and it takes work to make the world work for how things are for you now."

"And I was bothered that you were taking your hand to your eye. You can get it dirty very easily and hands, especially one touching cigarettes, aren't good for it. You should stop touching it to let it heal as best it can." He wasn't sure if he still had his eye and it was blind or if the thing was now completely gone.

He pointed to his own eye. "So...new huh. While in uniform?" He asked.

The burn in Eurydike's cheeks did not subside, but in his one good eye, visible relief immediately flooded in like a wave; even if he was s**t with words sometimes, when he was struggling the hardest, his eyes and body language had always been the best way to read him. He was a little embarrassed, still, but it felt so goddamn good in that moment to have someone immediately knew where he was coming from. "I - yeah, " he finished, a little lamely for what it was. He wanted to say so much more to what this guy was telling him, like how frustrating the little things were, like pouring out his bourbon at night or how nerve-wracking patrolling had been between this and the attack that'd caused it. He wanted to say it all, but that wasn't really something a guy should blurt out approximately five minutes after meeting someone.

Fritz got it too, of course. An attack had ******** him up too. It was just... it was harder talking to Fritz about s**t like that, and there was just so much other s**t wrapped up in other s**t with a shitty bow on top. And he didn't really want to put Fritz through a conversation like that, especially now that he was happier again, finally. It felt like tapping on Pandora's Box.

This guy was offering s**t up - empathy - and by the looks of it, he was in the same place Eurydike was now, with half the world pitch black instead of blurred. "Ah, s**t, you're right, " he grunted, drawing his hand away like it'd been burned and giving a rough, but sheepish, laugh. "Sorry, I'm ********' - I'm the worst at leavin' s**t well enough alone, really. I keep thinkin' the damn patch is in the way or somethin'." He grunted again, roughly pushing his hair away from his face and shaking out his hands before taking another drag of his cigarette.

His gaze dropped, and his cheeks burned again, although this was purely out of shame. "Yeah. Revenge - ever have somethin' come outta nowhere, but when it happens you think s**t I had that coming? Kinda one of those, " which probably sounded ******** ridiculously oddly specific. "I was part of some mission awhile back, never met this lady face to face, but I didn't help her an' - when they say payback's a b***h, don't think they meant a goddamn crystal to the face." Eurydike kind of tried to laugh it off; it was a ********, deflated effort. The whole thing was too fresh to slap something over it and pretend it hadn't been ******** reflex to take the spotlight off it was to start, "How'd you - " And then he stopped himself, wincing. "I mean. If you're cool talkin' 'bout it." Way to blurt out a ton of s**t and get invasive. s**t head.

"If it's still healing then the patch will be annoying but just try not to touch it or else you're going to get an infection and make it even worse. The patch usually isn't forever. Once everything heals then... well, I'm not sure how much gone it is so..." He decided just to leave it. The man was burning up in his face and was fidgeting in a way that made Gev feel nervous and wanting to move in place just to keep his limbs occupied.

"I have...had that happened a few time yes." He knew of plenty of instances where he had made mistakes and knew that he deserved the outcome for being stupid or gun-ho about something. However, he wasn't sure how that applied exactly to Eurydike's case and he listened with some degree of confusion. "You ....had a woman you didn't help stab you with a crystal in the face? ....like a senshi or civilian?" What kind of person did that to another person who wasn't their enemy. Where they just high off their mind and crazy?

The question of how he lost his eye made him instantly uncomfortable. Not because of how it happened, but because admitting how the situation happened revealed he wasn't originally a knight from the start.

Well, they were this far.

Sighing, he moved back to sit down on a wall that was behind them. "Well, I was a lieutenant." He said, letting that sink in for the senshi for a moment. "I spotted a princess and picked a fight. She was protected by Castor and one ice fist to the face later, I was bleeding my way to the ER." He said, pointing up tot he eyepatch. "Shredded the entire thing. Nothing they could do to save it. Surprised I don't have a giant scar on this side of the face." If he did, it would be kind of ironic. A ice scar on that side to match the burn scar on the side of his neck and his ear.

"So yeah. Got what was coming to me for getting ahead of myself and thinking I could take on the world like an idiot."

Eurydike kind of laughed. "I mean - it's ********, yeah. It's not a pretty picture, an' I ain't gonna be modelin' any time soon, that's for sure." He was trying to make a joke out of it, still. It was just in his nature to try and write s**t like that off without the focus lingering too long on him, especially his weak points. This guy didn't need all this s**t five minutes after meeting him.

Then, he visibly cringed. "I was - I kinda got mixed up in an operation that - we were holdin' nega agents for information, " and he felt awkward talking about it, but the context was kind of necessary. "She was apparently one of the agents that we got, an' I didn't know her, like, directly, but - I was in the wrong? I think. I don't ********' know." After everything, he was more ******** on the negavese than ever to be honest. "But she remembered me, an' this was my payback. Karma, I guess."

It felt really heavy to be getting into on a first conversation, and he honestly felt a little worse hearing Gevaudan used to be negaverse himself. Although hey, he had come around, so there was that. Eurydike didn't feel like he could judge him any more than he could judge Rhys. "You mean to tell me, " he remarked, a brow arching a bit, "that you had the ********' balls to pick a fight with a ********' princess? - wait, who's Castor? He a senshi?" His network was small, but with magic involved, he kind of assumed senshi. "Still though, that's a hell of a story." He kind of half cracked a smile. "Bold an' all. No shame in that."

Not like being wrapped up in a torture plot.

He grew quiet, eye sharp as he looked at the senshi.

"Castor is a prince, but he wasn't when I fought him." He answered, his tone restrained and chill.

"You took Negaverse agents? Did you torture them?" He asked, staring at him. "Who lead that operation? A bit strange for any senshi to do considering how much they like to talk big about being peaceful and just. There was another group who did that too." He said, his eyes on Eurydike, watching him carefully.

"How do you get mixed up in something like that?"

The tone he took changed, and Eurydike wasn't stupid; he knew he had to be honest, but he had to watch how blatantly honest he was. Gev was on his side, though, at least now he was. That was the big take-away here, that and Eurydike had to own what he'd done. So he took a deep breath.

"We did, yeah - apparently it was some kind of counter-strike or somethin', since the negaverse had taken order people an' done the same to 'em before, " he said. "That was before my time an' all, but I was honestly just... tryin' to protect my husband, boyfriend at the time. Negaverse had hurt him already, an' I wanted to try an' protect him. Mauvians came up with some tech to him 'em, don't really remember who got this thing off the ground though. I just kinda got looped in." Thraen. That had been his link, but Eurydike wasn't about to put any kind of target on his friend's back.

"I was a basic then, so mostly I just did support s**t. Water, patrollin', tried questionin' a few people. Got rough with one lieutenant, turned out to be my husband later, so... pretty much a wash, an' it's just bitten me in the a** since. Can't say I don't deserve it though." He moved as if he was going to fidget with his patch before he remembered, grumbling to himself and looking down at the ground instead.

Although.

"Did anyone else do that? - besides the negaverse?"

He was somber as he listened and the sharpness to his eye fadred to a resigned disappointment. Not to the man before him but to everything in general. "Seems no side is innocent of it anymore. A shame it is becoming common practice but I suppose no one gives a ******** anymore. Maybe it's just the way of things now."

At his question he decided he wanted to move a bit and gestured to him to walk with him. "It's dangerous to just stay in one spot."

It was more that he felt restless and uneasy talking about all this.

"The sailors had a White Moon Court. They jumped a couple of agents. A planned attack. It was organized. Lietenants. Captains. A general. Not many. They tortured them for days. Starved. Burned. Let rats eat them. Beat them. Wouldn't let them sleep. When it got close with no information. They cut skin. Cut a tongue out of a girl. Killed a few. We escaped only because of General Tanzanite but you do something like that to someone's people and they want blood. The ones who did it became the Dark Mirror Court somehow. Screwed up world where order makes chaos and chaos has to sit on the same side as it's torturers. Bunch of animals."

He looked back at the senshi. "Would you do it again? If you hated a side enough? If you felt it would help you win?'

He paused.

"Was it easy for your husband to forgive you?"

Something welled up in Eurydike, small but... more intense than he would have expected. Especially since he'd never really vocalized it at all, at least not yet. "Doesn't have to be, " he said before he could really think, his cheeks growing a little warm.

Whether or not one senshi really made a difference, well - especially him.

Eurydike nodded along, eager not to get himself into more bullshit when he was still healing, so he got to moving, falling into step with the knight.

Almost immediately, though, he missed one. "You mean to tell me white moon started this whole torture bullshit in the first place?" he asked, shock written across his face. "You ********' kiddin' me?" Cutting tongues, murder, burns - "I heard 'bout Dark Mirrors, but I ain't met any of 'em, " he admitted. Didn't sound like the best origins, though, and it was the first he'd ever heard that they used to be his people once upon a time.

The question was easy to answer. "No. Not again. Can't speak for anybody else, but I'm drawin' a line in the sand for me - I mean - " It wasn't that he was rethinking it, but since they were being so honest, "It's hard. 'Cause on one hand, this whole thing - I wanna ********' end the cycle. I'd like it if it stopped with me, y'know? - but then - " Eurydike bit his lower lip hard. "The negaverse did somethin' - ********' unforgivable to somebody I love. Somebody I thought was gone. An' that on top of this, I don't really know what the ******** to do about it."

The next question, though, it made him wince. "He doesn't remember. Any of it. Which I mean, I'm grateful, I'm so ********' grateful he remembers the good an' not the bad, but - kinda feels undeserved, y'know? Like I got off easy."

"As far as I can tell. The Negaverse in this branch didn't have a history to kidnap and torture anyone. We had a bit more prone to not okay that card. Once the White Moons decided to do that, things got personal. I guess once someone crossed a line then it's much easier to take that cleared path." He missed as he walked.

"Most Dark Mirrors know nothing about what happened. They weren't there at the start and I guess those that were are painting a prettier picture of themselves." He glanced as Eurydike spoke and he couldn't help the pained smile.

"Revenge get's to be a hungry animal. Someone hurts you. You strike back. That hurts someone and then someone strikes you. Someone you care about strikes back. Over and over. You need to make sure that first strike ends it. Makes them not able to fight again." He looked back. "You strike back and you aim for the throat. You aim to kill. Else they are going to hunt you down."

Their footfalls we're hard in the quiet street and hard asphalt road. "You did get off easy in that you get to reap in a happy relationship untested by that but then again, there is a salvation in the ignorance your husband has. He can sleep easier. Not be consumed by nightmares or to think about revenge. To do something for what happened to him. He is spared that pain but it also means those who hurt him got off without him knowing. He could wind up talking to someone who might have once harmed him. And you - you remember. Does it eat at you to know that here you are, not wanting to forgive the Negaverse for hurting someone you love and yet knowing you did the same thing?'

He watched him as he walked.

"It's fine to be a hypocrite. A lot of us are. I'm a example. I don't deny it. I'd kill for my own justice but I'm starting to see I'm not doing it for good. Can't use that lie like I used to do. I just am selfish."

I just like it.
