This was an article in my school newspaper, and I wanted to share it.
Quote:
Like many kids, sophmore Christina Smith* has two responsible, caring parents. They protect her and look after her schooling and health like any other parents do.
The only difference is that she has two moms.
"I have always been proud of my parents and have never felt disadvantaged," Smith said.
Since Smith was four years old, she has been raised by her birth mother and her mother's life partner, Jessica*.
Smith is open about her home life. She admits to at first feeling strange about her family but now feels proud of them and comfortable talking about them.
Growing up with what some consider an unusual family situation was somewhat difficult for Smith, but she has been able to adapt.
"I have no problems with people at school, everyone seems to be understanding and accepting," she said. "It was strange in middle school, but as people mature they seem to become more open minded."
Though having lesbian parents might not be common, according Smith, Redondo's atmosphere has not made her feel like an outcast because of it.
"Having two female parental figures has huge advantages, because you're much more understood," Smith said.
"I truly appreciate them and that it makes it so much easier to be open about it," she said.
According to Smith, her family does not seem out of the ordinary to her.
She has never felt like she has missed out on anything at all by growing up with her two mothers.
"We do everything a normal family would do; we have dinner, they come to my games, and they meet my teachers," Smith said.
When back-to-school night comes, both parents show up like any other family.
Her home functions like any other home, she said.
"I don't think my house is much more different than anyone else's," Smith said.
She has no problem with her mom's lifestyle or her own.
"As long as two people love each other, then they deserve to live happily."
